Well, I'm playing in a sort of ancient greek setting soon (obviously using all the mythical beasties) and I want to play a rogue.

I was just wondering whether anyone has a decent knowledge of that time, and could maybe throw in a few ideas as to what someone with the rogue abilities would be up to around the time, apart from assassinating his way around Greece and Troy, obviously. I could work THAT one out...

Cheers in advance!

Heh, sadly an assasination is usually the only type of rogue-ish thing you would encounter in a Greek setting... and even then, it was not a matter of occupation and skill, but of circumstance and extensive planning.

As I understand it, both Greek and Rome were for the most part very orderly societies. There wasn't much tolerance for thieves or gangs, and most of the people were either smart enough or respectful of the law that they didn't take on such underhanded professions.

Every culture has its criminal underworld, so the standard Rogue = Thief character would slot in fairly easily. There's also plenty of politicking around to allow for spies and assassins.

You also could be an athlete - physically fit, dexterous, good at climbing and running and jumping.

There are also scouts and skirmishers, like the sling-wielding peltasts, who could benefit from Rogue levels.

A Rogue/Fighter could do well in massed battles if he can flank an enemy.

There were also plenty of mercenaries in Greece following the Peloponnesian War. Later many turned their hands to banditry and prowled the countryside.

There were even pirates in the Aegean Sea.

And of course there are Politicians. Charismatic, diplomatic orators and lying cheating bastards.

Greek legends are as much about clever tricksters as brutal tough guys. Odysseus and Athena often trump their opponents through wits and guile.

Of course not. Think about it this way, you can count the number of Emperors that died of natural causes on one hand.
