| Cloud Clone07-17-05, 01:37 AM | I was writing a description for my current campaign character for an artist's rendering, and I found that knowing the details of a character makes them more dynamic; "fleshed out" if you will. It was an interesting experience writing up everything that I just inherently knew about my character. When you think about it, just writing down your character's description and their adventure(s) (albeit with more detail) is almost a science fiction book in itself. For instance, this isn't much more than a "bare bones" rendition of my character & story that I've been playing in my session. "His name is Ethan Broud. Ethan is the Hebrew name meaning "Enduring," and Broud is a variance of the Old English name Broudicca, meaning "victory." His parents named him this because they wanted him to become a great warrior for their kingdom and help to bring peace to their land. Growing up in the capital city of his country, Ethan entered the the local training academy for fighters and excelled because of his great strength and endurance. Not only that, but being slightly more agile and intelligent than many other fighters put him ahead of the game and he advanced through the rigorous training with relative ease. After graduating from the academy he entered among the ranks of his country's armed forces. After proving his worth in several important battles in the war, he gained a certain amount of prestige and success. Though he's mostly a soldier and aspiring officer of the armed forces, he doubles as a mercenary fighter on the side, taking up the fight for quarreling or ambitious individuals for the highest price he can get from them. Recently, a government official hired him to aid an adventuring party in an attempt to save her captured fiance, who is also a son of the king, from a an evil cult that wishes to unleash a god of terror and chaos into the natural world. He saved the prince, but he died by the hands of cultist followers after dealing the deathblow to the cultist leader. However, the party he was assigned to survived the battle and brought his remains back to the capital, where he was revived and given a magical Gauntlet of Rust bestowed upon him by the king in thanks of his service and bravery in battle. Now, he along with the rest of the adventuring party continue to fight the evil cultists in a desperate attempt to save the known world from the destruction and chaos of a dark god. He fights with an ornate greatsword, a majestic weapon that is heavily enchanted with magic for improved weilding and inflicting severe damage to the enemies of the weilder. The size and weight of this blade makes it a difficult weapon to use for those not trained in the use of martial weapons, though Ethan is outstandingly proficient with this weapon, making it extra dangerous in his capable grasp. Ethan does not always have the luxury of fighting his enemies within reaching distance, and has thus spent some time improving his archery skills in order to better combat enemise that are airborn or otherwise unreachable by his melee attacks. Thus, he carries a well crafted composite longbow to attack his enemies when long distances are unavoidable. He wears dark grey fullplate armor, cover with armor spikes and magically enchanted for extra effectiveness. On his left arm he wears a finely crafted buckler for improved defense, and also upon that arm is his Gauntlet of Rust he was granted from the king. On his right arm is a gauntlet covered in spikes, and it matches the rest of his armor. This gauntlet also serves as a locked gauntlet, endowed with special chains and hooks that help the wearer from being disarmed by his enemies. Underneath his armor he wears a belt that gives him a supernatural boost to his already incredible strength, and upon his back is a cloak that gives him magical protection against traps, spells, and other perilous situations he might be faced with. Anything he doesn't use in combat (money, supplies, etc.) are kept in a bag of holding inside his chestplate. Standing at a stauesque 6'1", Ethan weighs 212 lbs. of finely honed muscle on his own, and is an intimidating figure even when unarmored." With much editing, accentuation, and revision this could very well end up becoming it's own book. Has anyone else done/experienced this? If you have something of this sort of you own, feel free to post it for comparison, contrast, critique or whatever, I'd like to read it. (Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, I couldn't think of anywhere else it would rightly belong. If it's out of place just let me know and I'll be sure to contact a moderator to have it moved.) |
