| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi01-09-08, 02:22 PM | So, I'm soon going to be starting an undead-heavy campaign by the name "World of Williams" (our college) using a homebrew system. We finished our last arc (and previous characters) quoting Muppet Treasure Island for some reason, especially "Off to Zanzabar, to meet the Zanzabarbarians!" I'm going to be running with that for my next character - a Zanzabarbarian exchange student. I guess I should explain the campaign premise: it's set at a fictionalized version of our own college. Recent events have reintroduced magic to the world, although the effects are unnoticed in most of the world - the exceptions being only a handful of isolated colleges. One side effect of this is the spontaneous transformation of people into new races. My character was transformed into an orc, troll, or minotaur. I'm not yet decided. Some ugly race. See bottom of post for their new stats. The main thing I'm going for here is that as an exchange student, he was less prepared for this, and he'll be going home sooner (just one semester). His first response to waking up green and with tusks (or furry and with horns, or whatever) was "Oi man, not cool. What I gonna tell mom and dad?" (I know, that's more like a Jamaican accent. I can't do many). I'm thinking he's religion/history major focusing on mythology. As far as archetype ("class"), he's essentially a binder. Within game, that means spending my "Eph points" to gain binder-like abilities. His actual archetype will have to be Legacy, which is a sorcerer-esque class (using spellpoints) specialized in fey-based (save or be screwed), demonic-based (blasting and save-or-die), and summoning (regrouping and detection) magic. INT-based. My spell points (mana) are also INT-based. I suspect binder abilities with a 5 round delay now require mana (which recharges). To summarize: foreign exchange student comes over for a semester abroad and suddenly finds himself turned into an orc/troll/minotaur. He's really not happy about it. But he's also found that he can now summon some of the obscure totemic and voodoo spirits he's researched. That's awesome - even if it does make him even uglier than before. He hopes to find a vestige that will allow him to appear human again. So I suppose the search for knowledge of Naberius should be one of his priorities. Or at least the ability to hide Naberius's sign. So, what do you think? Any tips on how to RP him otherwise? Which race seems best? What name should he adopt? (It's become practice for changed creatures to take a new name, usually befitting their new form). Orc +1 Stamina, -1 Intellect Medium size Base Speed: 30’ Battle Rage: Swift, Cooldown (24 hours), Encounter. Gain +2 Strength and Stamina, +2 to Will saves, and -2 to Armor. These bonuses are morale bonuses. You are fatigued for 1 minute afterward. Tenacity: You do not fall unconscious if you are dying, and may continue to act. If you would normally be dying, you are instead disabled. Orcish Savagery: May reroll a failed Handler check when dealing with wolves, a failed Persuasion check made to intimidate, or a failed Athletic check. Racial Language: Oruk Typical Archetype: Athlete Trolls +1 Agility, -1 Intellect Medium size Base Speed: 30’ Rapid Healing: Recovers health at twice the normal rate. Troll Regeneration: Attack, Cooldown (24 hours), Scene. Can gain fast healing 1. The fast healing increases by 1 every 5 levels. Jungle Lore: May reroll a failed Acrobatics check or Survival check pertaining to jungles. +1 racial bonus to Thrown weapon damage. Racial Language: Low Common Typical Archetype: Partier Minotaur +1 Strength, -1 Agility Medium size Base Speed: 30’ Darkvision 60’ Horns: Primary natural weapon (1d6) Uncanny Instincts: May reroll a failed Survival check. Can instinctively navigate mazes. Nature resistance equal to Stamina (min. 1) Racial Language: Taura-he Typical Archetype: Naturalist Note that ability scores are now identical to ability modifiers. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose01-09-08, 10:54 PM | Ok lets see if I got this right. You are a perfectly ordinary exchange student from Zanzibar. A relatively backwards island nation. A Meeposian so to speak (gods I think I just turned old enough to give away my age with a reference). Magic has seeped into the world and while this may have caused something of an uproar at first it is now an old news type of story. People have come to accept that this sort of thing happens by now. Your a student of cultural anthropology who is travelling outside your own little piece of the world for the first time. Further, you weren't prepared for this kind of encounter because in your own nation this sort of thing was really more a rumor about foriegners than an accepted fact. What kind of magic are we dealing with here? Farie tale trolls are very different from the D&D monsters. Archmages and Arganauts or Changelings and Chimeras? Seems to me like your character was a rather serious student with a real love of knowledge for its own sake. Probably the type who sees foreign exchange as more of an experiment in empyrical experience. As such you are at the point where you just crossed over the line of how far you intended to immerse yourself in the world. Play him as transforming, slowly and fighting it the whole way, from what you were to what your new instincts tell you that you are. Fight tradition, both local and attached to your new form, and cling to your local customs, perhaps even a little desperately (Rolf from Ed, Edd, and Eddy to be a little more contemporary). |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi01-10-08, 12:00 AM | Meeposian as in Meepo? Well, don't get too hung up there, because that's a comedy there mainly because we all laughed at the Muppet Treasure Island reference. They're fine with me using a Jamaican accent to portray him. The DM especially, since the campaign is apparently World of Warcraft based, and WoW trolls have Jamaican accents. Otherwise, yeah, you've got it right. The magic is old news, and mostly isolated. Most places don't even get much magic, and those that do aren't accompanied by transformations to new races. It's just that Williams was also the center of a demonic invasion, and somehow that catalyzed the transformations. I was seriously at the wrong place at the wrong time. I suppose Changelings and Chimeras describes it better, although there are yet few magical beasts - just demons, undead, and fey. We met tonight, and I've decided on a troll "druid" who plays up the trickier side of nature. Trolls are known for loving parties and reptiles - usually in that order. Seems like you have good advice. I'll definitely work with this. Since he's a student of religion, especially of mythology, I'm thinking he's responding to this whole experience by searching out the various totemic and voodoo spirits he's learned about. He's probably a Wiccan now, if he wasn't before. Specifically, I think he'll take some large predatory cat as his ambush form (something equivalent to wildshape). Here he's rejecting his growing interest in snakes and lizards. But on the opposite side, I think one of his items (he gets two "loot" and one "trinket") will activate a Snake Shield spell. It's sort of like a druid's fire shield, but with a snakebite with poison or constriction instead of fire damage. Although this may push what the DM intends for trinkets or appropriate for his "druids," which have more subtle spells. His trinket will be a cobra hoodie. Here he's embracing the love of reptiles but taking something very undruidic for clothing. Btw, starting level is now 7. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose01-10-08, 01:13 AM | Actually Meeposian as in from Meepos. As in Balki from an old TV show. Perfect Strangers? I think that was what it was called. You're too young to remember it (aaahh the pain of typing that) but you may see it on nick at night or some similiar old rerun channel. Edit: Quick web search to give you an idea of Balki is his quote on meeting the distant cousin he spends most of the show with. Balki: "I walk the streets, I search the alleys, I say to everyone, 'Have you seen Larry?' You don't know how many people have never heard of you." |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi01-10-08, 01:34 PM | All right. Wikipedia is my friend. (btw, it's Mypos). Ah, Nick at Night. Oh how I remember thee. I would always flee when your time came. (I'm too young to remember it - just too young to remember ever watching it). But it sounds good. Seems like he's getting fleshed out. Other than the name he adopts. I'm really tempted to call him "Crocodile of the Forest, Snake of the Seas" and see what nickname he ends up getting. (Like last game and Kasbo = "Duckgnome.") Especially since he considers "Crocodile of the Forest" to be a shortened version. (Like first name as opposed to full name). If it's not clear, this is meant to be a humorous campaign. |
