Well now, I'll leave alot of this open to you all.
Here's the concept; we have a monk that wields a spear. He's part of a family order, The Spirit Vaults, that has been seeking out "evil spirits" for centuries. The Spirit Vaults are said to trap evil spirits within their bodies, to protect the world from the creatures. Now, that's about all the backstory we get, beyond the fact that their true identities are never revealed. They merely use the name of the originator of the order and the suffix "the Spirit Vault".
Bugbear monk is about all I have so far, in addition to the stuff I mentioned. Any ideas?

Monk = Lawfull neutral/evil or good?

You can play him as a self serving evil bastard who *only* does his duty out of the fact that it gives him power.

Perhaps he is waiting for whoever heads to order to die, then he will step in and take his place. Whereupon he will use whatever resources it has to mastermind a plan to take over whatever country he is in.

Or he might be geased to trap these "evil spirits". Having to attack them or otherwise suffering from its effects.

Can it be that he is equally despised by the celestials and other good spirits as he poses as of as much a threat to them as he does to the evil spirits should he choose to?

I didn't have much to work from, these are just a couple of ideas picked out of the air.

I would say LN, with leanings towards good. Basically, the order is the male heir in the family. There is only one "Spirit Vault", at a time. The family has been geased, by the first "Spirit Vault", to produce one male child, suitable to be the next in line. So, in this case, there is no leader of the other. The information to learn is in the family archives, as well as older, retired members of the family.
I don't think being geased to hunt them is appropriate. He chose to follow the path of his family, but it should be apparent in his behavior that he doesn't really consider any alternative path, but to continue the legend of the "Spirit Vault". The concept for the "Vault" is that he is considered to be the same person as the originator. A secret identity, as it were.
Likely, all spirits would be aware of him. Since he stores spirits, anything that detected spirits would detect him as well. So, he would almost be like a beacon to spirits of all sorts. I wouldn't say that good spirits would hate him; more like they would be wary of him, or even respectful, in some cases. It's pretty much obvious that he can come close in some respects to taking them on.
