That said, if you already had an animal companion, and got the feat in question, your DM would have the last say as to whether you could Familiar-ize it. A druid in a campaign I run started off with a Giant Rat as his companion, and now the thing is as tough as the front-line fighters in all but damage output. |

As I understand it, you could get any animal from the normal 'animal' list as a companion. If you look at the description of the leopard for example it says that the leopard stats can be used for all cats about a leopards size - puma, panther. Something similar can be found for a lot of animals (Raven... and many other animals). So you can enjoy some variability there. Talk to your DM, choose an animal about the same size and a life style close to the one you want (I'm not sure about a platypus, should you want one but in most cases you should be able to find something that fits and is allright with both of you...) However, a animal companion is just that: an animal with an intelligence of 1-2, that isn't able to speak your language. You can't take magical beasts as an animal companion. As a rule! If you're just looking for a differnt kind of animal, maybe one that fits into an exotic setting that should be possible, but keep your hands off imps, hippogriffs and the like. |
