| mod500012-14-05, 09:44 AM | Hi, all! Just need some help with a background--something doesn't sit with me quite right here, and I'm not sure what. Maybe you can help me? The setting is Greyhawk, but I'm not too familiar with it, and haven't found a good region yet. Could anyone help me with that too? Anyway, here's the background of Glim Shadowshaper: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Glim's clan name was originally Darkstalker, and he grew up in a small community of Whisper Gnomes close to a Rock Gnome city with which his home town traded occasionally. At a fairly young age, he was found to be proficient with the art of illusion, and so was sent to apprentice with an old illusionist in the city. However, the old gnome died only a few years after the apprenticeship began, and Glim was forced to continue his studies from the books left to him by his master. Among the usual books dealing with spellcraft and magical lore, he found a small collection of forbidden books that the master had never meant for Glim to learn, at least until he gained the wisdom that comes with age to handle these dark secrets. Glim knew nothing of the differences, and took to the new material with a fervor that would have impressed the old master, if not for the material he was reading. He found that he had a talent for the darker side of illusionism, for the pulling of shadowstuff straight from The Plane of Shadow to Oerth, and with it changing not only the perceptions of the spell's targets, but also the very foundations of reality. He delved deeper into this forgotten lore, and learned of a different type of magic, one that took its power straight from The Plane of Shadow, a more insiduous source of magic, far more subtle than the brash magic of everday sorcery. He began preparing his cantrips through this new magic, and found it to his liking as his spells became stronger for the use of this "new" magic. However, he was unaware that this new source for magic also influenced his own views and decisions, making ethics and morals a thing of the past to be forgotten on a moment's whim. He became a recluse, never seeing anyone, and arranging for any needs he might have to be taken care of while he slept or studied. Glim felt he was nearly ready to go out into the world and procure more books and find more knowledge of this "shadow magic" as he called it. However, before he could quit the city, a fellow illusionist came calling. He was old, far beyond the years of young Glim, and saw him for what he was. He quickly gathered the populace and told them that Glim had become an abomination, a thing to be distrusted and feared, with no real values other than himself. The city had long had rumors about the young gnome, that he had started summoning abberations deep in the recesses of the old master's home, that he consorted with devils, and made pacts with demons, giving up his soul for power, and were nearly immediately convinced that Glim was an evil fiend. Glim barely had time to gather supplies and his spellbook before he was run out of the city, and told never to come back. He cursed the townsfolk, and went back to his home town, but found that word had also gotten there, and that he had been disowned and exiled. His anger grew until it seethed like a mass of boiling serpents, and he changed his name in a fit of rage, becoming Glim Shadowshaper. Fortunately he was able to control himself from doing anything worse, and decided to go out and make his way in the world, where he learned about The Lady of Perfection with her agenda of evershifting shadows, and found that it fit his own plans and mind-set. Balance between the light and dark--shadow was what was important. And so he would promote it. However, he has abandoned his morality, and will take whatever measures he deems necessary for the sake of balance, or his own personal whim, whichever concerns him more at the time. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Suggestions? |

Like the shadow stuff did something ( physical )to him , and he thougth the town did it to him to give them an excuse to kick him out. |
