I am going to make a gnome bard as my next player. He is very charismatic and has a special tie to nature. He also has a pet fox. Any ideas on how to spice him up? I was thinking of making him a bushman bard from the savanna, who plays a flute and is fairly primitive. Im also up for any ideas about a cool backround.

How is your str. and dex.? Have you ever heard of Capoeira? It's a martial art tracing its roots to Angola, where slaves, with their hand chained together, created a martial art of high acrobatics and powerful legs sweeps and kicks. It's done to a beat created by a percussion band. So, take drum or tamborine as your instrument of choice and gear your skills and feats for the battle dancer PrC. I think its in the PHB II. Probably the best place to see Capoeira in action (very well done) is the movie "Only the Strong", starring Mark Dacascos. Good gaming!

How about giving him an Australian feel?

Change the fox to a thylacine (or Tasmanian Tiger - extinct now unfortunantly) and leave the stats - it wouldn't be too much of a crime to prentend that, in the context of your character, the thylacine was a burrowing animal.

As he has a special tie to nature, he could see him self as a warden/protector of the land - either as a wanderer and hunter (savage bard from Unearthed Arcana?) or just a travelling minstrel. Plus this could provide great character motivation to explore the nearest dungeon (So, Townsman Kevin, those goblins are logging the forest hey?).

In either case, he could also strive towards the Australian ideal of mateship. Go beyond the idea of calling everyone 'mate' or 'oldmate' and really put yourself out there for your friends. Never leave a battle whilst one man is still fighting; or when heavily wounded, rush up and take the fighters place in line - even if it means your demise.

Lastly, if you where to choose this route, go beyond the 'Steve Irwin' or 'Dundee' stereotypes. They would just trivialise any further ideas you produce, and you would always have be expected to do (or say) something outlandish or stupid.

My friend's friend did this with his bard:

Have black, long, messy hair. Wear studded, black leather armor. Have two punk bracelets (the kind with spikes) and give him an (wait for it) electric loot. It must look like an axe, or some other bludgeoning weapon (club, mace, etc.). If you die, say that some evil god shall ressurect you and come after whatever killed you. What's funny is that you're a gnome, which sort of contradicts how tough and punky you are trying to be because you are so short (it works better with halflings).
