| Ashaman Nash10-21-03, 12:02 AM | I am going to be joining a group very soon. I'm in the process of trying to find one in my area, etc.. Regardless, I don't know what I want to make. It's been a while since I've played, and I don't yet own the v3.5, which is what I want to play. So just as a foreword to my character creation, any ideas on a character that would be pretty efficient in combat AND terribly fun to roleplay? Any ideas are welcome. |
| Alrunic Silverfyre10-21-03, 12:06 AM | Well, any character can be great to role play and good in combat... What type or types of characters do you like to play? Gimme more to work with and I'll give ya some ideas. |
| Ithilorien10-21-03, 12:13 AM | 1) an half-ogre/ss barbarian/fighter named Hermi/Helga with an intelligence and charisma of 8 or less and the war cry "Hermi/Helga smish!!!" 2) A kind-hearted half-elf bard/fighter/bladesinger who has always been discriminated for because of his race and now has chosen to never judge anyone on appearances. 3) A human or aasimar paladin of Sune (always my personal favourite) you can play him as either bashful and lovelorn, a gallant and noble warrior, or a champion of hippie-style free love. 5) A Rogue/Fighter/Duelist who proves his tongue is sharper than his sword. |
| Ashaman Nash10-21-03, 12:39 AM | Well, I've always loved using rapiers, since I fight with them in real life. The dashing type sounds best to me, although pious characters are cool too... |
| Alrunic Silverfyre10-21-03, 12:52 AM | Ahh as do I! The rapier and main gauche are my primary choices for fencing and swordfighting. Good to see another fencer among us posters! Anyways, I highly recommend either an elven fighter/rogue/duelist or a human fighter/weapon master specializing in rapier. Either way, both are excellent choices for a rapier wielder. Perhaps a moon elven pirate? |
| Ashaman Nash10-21-03, 01:11 AM | Sorry...like I said, it's been a long while since I played. Moon Elven? Fighter/Rogue/Duelist looks cool...can I use the rapier AND the gauche and specialize in disarming? |
| Trydan10-21-03, 05:29 AM | A character wielding a rapier can actually be very effective (e.g. keen rapier + Improved Critical - nice!). This sort of thing lends itself to role-playing characters such as "duellists", "pirates", "baccaneers", "nobles", etc. Plenty of ideas there. |
| Alrunic Silverfyre10-21-03, 01:31 PM | A moon elf is the default elf in DnD...I just pay in Forgotten Realms so disregard me... Anyways, have a fighter specilize in main gauche and rapier and then take the Improved Disarm feat. That would capitalize on disarming and then a quick thrusting follow through... |
| eudas10-21-03, 02:50 PM | keep in mind that keen and imp crit () don't stack in 3.5... eudas |
| Ashaman Nash10-22-03, 01:02 AM | Should I go for Weapon Finesse as well? In addition, I want to be a race that is not commonly used...but not something ridiculously rare. That might confuse, but I think I'm confusing myself. :D Any ideas? |
| Ithilorien10-22-03, 01:30 AM | Weapon Finesse is an incredibly good call as most rapier wielders tend towards the rogue and/or duelist class, meaning dexterity is important for an armor class boost and skill modifiers - often to the detriment of their strength score. As for races, perhaps the tiefling? One of my favorite characters was a tiefling rogue/fighter/duelist. |
| Lord of the Ninth10-22-03, 01:34 AM | If you use a rapier you're gonna want to get weapon finesse, otherwise you don't get to apply your dex bonus to your attack instead of your str. This is essential for almost every duelist ('cept for this one PC I played with once who was a half-ogre duelist, he of course used his strength, ahhh good times). But if you want somehting that isn't super bizarre (like a flumph duelist), but also isn't human fighter no. 4, consider the Tiefling. They have a level adjustment of +1, but in exchange for that they recieve a +2 bonsu to int and dex, a -2 penelty to charisma, a +2 bonsu to bluff (which is the main thing a duelist uses charisma for any way) and hide, as well as outsider traits, darkvision, energy resistance 5 for fire cold and electricity as well as the ability to cast darkness 1/day. Plus tiefers are super cool. |
| Ashaman Nash10-22-03, 01:36 AM | Tieflings are one thing I am not familiar with. I plan on getting the 3.5 PHB soon, but until then the only Tiefling information I have is from playing with Haer'Dalis in my group on Baldur's Gate 2. What exactly are they? |
| Ithilorien10-22-03, 01:43 AM | You can find tieflings under "planetouched" in the 3.5 SRD: http://www.wizards.com/D20/article.asp?x=srd35 They are humans who have a touch of the fiendish within them, either from a distant ancestor who was an evil outsider (or even deity) or some sort of exposure to the lower planes. THey get some neat abilities (though they do suffer an ECL) and you can always work out a fun storyline as a good tiefling trying to redeem themselves from their evil heritage - or a tiefling who revels in it, whatever floats your boat. |
| Ashaman Nash10-23-03, 01:50 AM | I'm also thinking of dual-wielding crossbows...what about that? |
| Ithilorien10-23-03, 02:17 AM | well, they take a long time to reload and both hands would be full . . . |
| The_Yellow_Dart_Swinger10-23-03, 11:20 AM | Well if you want to go with a duel wielding crossbow. I'd suggest the hand crossbow. It does 1d4 damage, and is in the tiny class. Because if your using two at a time, usually with crossbows you'd have to stop and set one down while you reloaded one, then set the reloaded one down while you reloaded the other one, so its like a full round action. However, with the quick draw feat, and with the hand crossbow being tiny, you could whip two out, fire, drop them for a free action and then quick draw two more out, fire, and repeat. Course you'd probably have to have a lot of them. And the downfall is that they are considered an exotic weapon so you have to burn a feat on them, and they cost 100gp a piece so it gets expensive. And each bolt cost's 1gp for just one. But thats the only way I could see a duel wielding crossbow user. |
| Serene Selene10-23-03, 01:13 PM | Dual crossbow wielding? Mm... A friend of mine once had this brilliant stroke of genius to use two hand crossbows. Though he had the most unusual way to reload them. Once he fired both crossbows, he would toss one into the air, reload the other. He'd catch the first one he threw up and throw the other, and reload the second. Then he'd fire both of them. Juggling hand crossbows. Of course it was so utterly retarded and rediculous that the DM had to allow it. The player also chose the Rapid Reload feat, if anything for flavor. |
| Ashaman Nash10-23-03, 03:02 PM | LOL! The only way for that to be even remotely possible would be having your quarrels at your waist. Hmm.... |
| TheMightyMcClaw10-23-03, 04:49 PM | I would just like to point how completely unreasonable dual-wielding crossbows are, both from the point of game mechanics and of justifying it in the real world. If you want to wield a pair of ranged weapons, and your DM doesn't have firearms, try throwing things at people... throwing axes and knives are both nice. |
| Lhiannon Sidhe10-23-03, 08:11 PM | Tiefling Paladin  |
| Ashaman Nash10-24-03, 01:36 AM | Wow, I'm so fickle. After reading the boards a little and seeing some of the awesome spell tactics, I really want to play a sorceror or wizard, with a familiar maybe... Thanks for the help guys, but it's obvious I'm going to have to get the book BEFORE deciding anything about what I want to be. :D |
