After toying with the idea of playing a scout and even a rogue specializing in explosives I've set my sights on an arcane caster who just happens to be a runaway after discussing options with another player.

Firstly, myself and another player are going to be playing brothers in our next campaign and I will be playing the younger. What we've got so far is that for some reason(which would vary depending on arcane class) his father, likely a Knight of minor Lord disliked the younger son and treated him like dirt. In his early teens, my character leaves the 'safety' of home and ventures off into the world. What I'm trying to decide upon now is what kind of spellcaster to play and how it would affect his acceptance in terms of the general populace as well as his father.

At the start of the campaign, I'll be playing a 15-16 year old level one spellcaster and my friend is going to be his older, 18-19 year old brother who will most likely be taking up the Knight or similar character class.

The Warlock was my first thought.
After all, what 'good-aligned' Knight/Noble would want his bloodline to be tainted with such 'evil'? My problem, is that he'll only have access to one Invocation. I've never played a level one character before so I have to worry about selecting the best abilities/spells from a limited selection. Optimization aside, I do like the idea of playing a Warlock.

EDIT: I'm not set on playing a Warlock.
The Sorcerer or another arcane caster would do the job too.

Also, I am required to have a real profession in town.
I imagine despite his youth he will be involved with a young lady(NPC) romanticly so perhaps he's an apprentice to her father... Hmm...

Anyway~ If anyone has any ideas or tips I'd love to hear them.
Thanks,

Well sorcerer works as well, if the Knight/Father in intolerant of magic. Having magic start randomly popping up within your child wouldn't be something you want when you hate magic.

As for a practical profession, that can be just about anything that would be present in a town. Perhaps if the town has a small fishing port you could be a net maker?

Yeah, Sorcerer/Warlock seems to be my best bet.
I'm leaning towards the Warlock not because of their Eldritch Blast but their Invocations and the inhuman abilities you can gain.

While I do want a practical profession, I also want it to be something interesting... So, I'm fresh out of ideas.

Unfortunatly practical profession in a fantasy setting = usually boring as mud.

Blacksmith is probably the most exciting practical profession out there, unless you want to dabble in alchemy.

Blacksmith, eh? Not sure it's all that enthralling, or original. Alchemy... same problem. It's not really interesting to me. The two ideas I did have for practical occupations were being an artist or as mentioned earlier, working on explosives/fireworks which my rogue specialized in.

Well artist and fireworks maker even being in the town your character is in is solely based on how large it is, a small town wouldn't bother with their own fireworks producer, and the typical artist in smaller towns and villages would be the local bard.

Having been unable to decide upon a specific profession and after being encouraged by my DM to do so, I shall be playing a Wizard studying under a mentor in the particular town we begin our adventure in. I'll post a character history in another thread when I complete it. Thanks for your help, anyway, Kitaki.
