I would like to build an arcane spellcaster, a sort of character I have very rarely used. I am faced with a bit of a dev/op conflict here. The concept I am building to is more of a sorcerer sort, a chaotic roguish scoundrel (yes, I am used to playing rogues.) Charisma is a score I would like to emphasize; his personality might come across as a bit of a charming mimbo. In many ways he would really be the opposite of the characterization of a bookish, academic wizard. On the other hand, the role that he should fill is that of a support caster, a role that I tend to think of as being filled more properly by a wizard. So what I am looking for is a spellcaster that has flexibility more similar to a wiz to allow him to fill out the support role but more of a sorcerer-y feel and perhaps charisma as the key attribute. Or if that’s too much to ask, at least a way to backstory a wizard to fit the concept. As far as multi-classing goes, I plan on starting at very low level, first preferably, so I would be interested in something I could start quickly as well as grow into. |

What I want is more of a full featured spellcaster, just with a scoundrel-ish and somewhat less intellectual flavor than a classic wizard. Thank you though. |

I would probally go with the classes boards myself but here we are and so I'll put my two cents in. I think that for support caster I would go more the divine route particularly at lower levels. The have acess to the same stat buffs at 2nd level spells as a arcane caster and the also get spells like bless, prayer, aid, sactuarary and the list goes on but my point is made. arcane casters have some of the nicer higher level buffs (fireshield, ironskin and haste) but at lower levels and for total number of buff type spells overall I think diviine casters have it. But for a support caster with a rougeish bend you can't beet a sorcer I think. Mostly because with careful spell selection you can emulate the best parts of the rouge class mius the backstab damage bounus. bluff = charm person, pick locks = knock, disable divice - detect traps and shatter. Also as a buffer you want alot of spells over higher level spells. Add in prestidigitation and you should be as rouge-like as you want without scarificing much in your caster options. Keep in mind though you will have limited number of spells known. So your problem will be balancing buffs vs rouge emulation spells with adding a dash of making your char viable in combat spells. At 1st level I'd probally start with 0-light, mage hand, message and prestidigitation 1st-charm person and magic missle. This combo of spells should allow your caster to speak silently with comrads to set up marks (message), maipulate objects deftly up close (prestiditcation) or from far away (mage hand) and light is useful because there is always at least one person in a group that doesn't have darkvision or low light vision so needs some sort of light. Charm person means you can be really charming and bluff alot and when you get in trouble well your char. just turns up the magical charm and magic missle... well what can I say I believe that eventually every mage takes this spell no matter how hard they try to avoid it (and I've tried really hard in the past) so you might as well get it over with now. It's a good staple spell for damage and makes sure you not completely useless in combat. Also keep in mind with a arcane caster you get a familar. at later levels when it can "speak with master" a cat can be an invaluable infiltrator and frants bonuses to move silently. |
