Hello!

Together with a cleric, a fighter, a druid and a paladin I will start in a new core only campaign. Considering the lack of skills and arcane magic I will create a rogue/wizard/arcane trickster. We're starting at level 1.

This (home-made) campaign is special in that sorcerers are respected for their powers, whereas wizards are not. The general idea is that it is way cooler to be able to manifest spells 'just because you can' rather than having to study extensively... every day and day again.

Furthermore, the world has an organisation for arcane casters (mostly sorcerers though - see above) where they can duel each other to gain ranks and earn respect. (The highest ranking member of this organisation within a certain area is authorized to make decision on behalf of the organisation)

I would like to play a character who is unable to cast spontaneously but has found himself able to study hard enough to obtain the same result. His goal is to show the world that wizards are at least as usefull or powerfull as sorcers. He wants to be admitted into this organisation and wants to earn respect.

Now I am having some problems with pouring these idea's into a nice story that isn't competely cliche. Any idea's are greatly appreciated.

Current idea:

Tobin is a happy halfling that travels with his family and friends on a caravan. Trading and traveling to lands far away. In his travels he notices that people tend to come to sorcerers for (arcane) help, whereas wizards - schooled and knowledgable as they might be - are left aside. Always wanting to be liked (who isn't?) he 'decides to become' (as if he has a choice) a sorcerer. Being unable frustrates him.

He notices however, that he has a knack for learning stuff, and after much studying he eventually manages to manifest magic (use magic device? some latent spellcasting?) However, people around him realize it is wizardry, not sorcery and they dislike and disrespect him for it. Eventually he feels so unwelcomed that he leaves the caravan and goes his own way.

He lives on the streets, stealing only from rich people and donating anything he doesn't strictly need to the church.

[I'd figured a LG alignment since he has to live with a paladin - also being very focussed on becoming a wizard seems lawfull to me]

I'm a bit stuck from here on however... Suggestions are welcomed!

Also, playing rogue/arcane trickster poses extra problems since the character will not be an effective wizard. Any idea's on how to go about this are welcomed as well. I mean - how can the character justify taking rogue levels while he is trying so hard to become a respected as a decent arcane caster?

I hope this is enough information to work with, feel free to bug me if you need more information :-)

Perhaps in this society where sorcerers are very high on the social hierarchy, a secret underground organization could exist that consists of wizards. These underground "practitioners of the art" utilize all resources available to them to achieve their goals. Some future goals could include possible takeover of the sorcerer’s guild. They seek to prove themselves and gain respect and will do so by any means necessary.

in talking to your dm i'm sure that such a society could exist. tobin could therefore be an operative of this group and his travels with the group could include a secret agenda related to the underground wizards guild.

also it would be interesting to know how bards are viewed as they cast their spells without need to prepare them ahead of time, like a sorceror
