I'm currently designing an archivist with the draconic archivist feat (basically, with your dark lore, add dragons and constructs). I know i want to play him as a CN religious nutjob who believes his prayerbook speaks to him from a divine force. I'm having a hard time with severl things about his backround: Why does he believe his book talks? Where does he hail from? What deity does he follow? Also, how do you believe he would act not only in normal society, but amongst a regular party.

I kinda had the idea that he has split personalities and the underlying one communicates with him by the book.

And now I shall awnser your questions!

One part is that he/she (please be careful about this decision, sometimes it make no or all differnce) is insane or delusional and that it isn't actualy talking but rather it is what he thinks. Another reason is that his/her spit personality is writing magical messages that talk, trying to either confuse, help or give hope to the Archivist like you said (we think alike). Another is that is an intelligent magic item and that it was a relgious servent of the deity, unknowningly or not that he is a magic item. Perhaps it is possed or channeled into. When you say the Realms, you mean the FR, right? Well than I have no idea but the Silver Marches or Waterdeep are nice places. It all depends on what your leaning twords to worship. Dose he/she worship a CG, CE, N or just CN deity? CN? Of coarse he shoudn't. He should beleive in has much freedom as he wants, not obeying the socitity of man, for he/she is a servent of a deity!

We do think alike. Looking over my map of Faerun, I think he would have to come from a wilderness area where he'd be ignorant of most other religions. The North would be a good choice, with it's proxemity to several major regions to preach the word of this divine power.

I maybe would make him pray to Shar....A trauma could have shattered his mind....making him weird and aloof....His book could be the representation of his darker personality...maybe even be a receptacle for Shar's soothing words and schemes....

I think FR Archivists would most likely follow Oghma*, the god of knowledge, and hail from Candlekeep**. The questing for lost and secret knowledge thing suits them well. He could have discovered dark knowledge that corrupted and twisted his mind.

But given the nature of your character, I doubt he'd stay there long. He'd probably yearn for freedom from Church dictates and ceremonies and the like. And his... odd ideas probably wouldn't go down well.

Perhaps he stormed off after arguments, possibly with several stolen books of lore stashed under his robes. Or the Church leaders recognised him as a valuable asset (but would rather not have him hanging around), and sent him out into the world to gather lore and periodically return with this discoveries.

As to why he talks to his spellbook, I couldn't possibly say . You could maybe make something of Oghma communicating through his divine words.

* I recently played a Paladin of Oghma, hence why I'm answering thusly.

** Or possibly the secret library counterpart to Candlekeep, but I don't know where that is.

Um.. Cyric?

Why not have your character come from a huge city like Waterdeep, have him/her be hip and urbane, fashionable and often mixing in all the right circles but at the same time seen as a loon with extremly far-out view points that most people find either heretical, gifted or stupid. A D&D version of a "media darling" :D

She/he could be a total nutjob who finds himself riding his insanity like a surfer, ie: will most likely come to harm and "drown" in his/her own madness at some point. But for the moment finding a strange sort of Zen in true chaos.

Have your character use different voices and abruptly change in personality, one day thinking its taboo to eat meat and telling off the other party members for doing so but then eating meat him/herself right the next day, right in front of them. If asked why, then come up with an "out-there" reason the character is "allowed" to eat meat or just simply say "I changed my mind..."

Have the character speak of himself as a character in a story-book thats already written and make him almost aware he is a character in a rpg, but convey this in a serious and theoretical manner that wont offend the gamers.

So the other players dont hate him/her and so you can play this type of person without causing trouble all the time in game, have the charater be a loyal, nice person who always sticks by a friend and make sure to underline his/her commitment to the party and consern if and when they are hurt etc.

As a DM I would most likely use Oghma as this characters "secret" patron, guiding the demented one to greater things...

I like that idea better than my own.

However, I'm just not seeing Oghma. For most archivists yes, but not this one.
