He lived there with his two sisters and brother. Life was hard on the farm his farther believed in hard work in doing everything he could with his own hands and those of his family. He believed that modern farming techniques and tools just bread weaklings why spend money when a little sweat and muscle would accomplish the same. His father was a huge man well muscled and deep commanding voice he had no time for day dreaming or slacking off in fact he was happiest when he was hard at work. He had a tattoo on his right shoulder that was rumored to signify he was a sergeant in an elite guard but nobody in the town new anything more about it and he never speaks of it the only evidence is a rusting sword discarded in the barn. His older Brother was the exact same build as his farther “a chip of the old block” who enjoyed picking on his younger brother. In his farther eyes he could do no wrong his only one vice was whenever he had any spare time he would go into the woods behind the barn and practice with that old sword for he had a dream to become a great warrior. Geebus was the exact opposite he loved all things technical and mechanical and hated physical labor he spent most of his young life avoiding his farther and most of all work. His mother use to dent pans and pots and chip mugs to give Geebus excuses as to why he hadn’t done his chores saying that she had needed him to repair the items. Ken of course new all this and considered his younger son a Slacker the harder he tried to get Geebus to do a decent days work the more items his mother would have for repair or send him off on some errand to a nearby farm or town. Geebus resented his farther for this and thought him cruel and unfair. Geebus spent most of his time in the barn sculpting items out of clay or wood or even iron when he could get his hands on some but what he loved to do the most of all was disassemble items he had “acquired” to see how they worked many of the towns folk and surrounding farms had had things go missing or smaller parts of larger machinery. The mayor of the town was looking into the bizarre items that were stolen but had no clue as to who was stealing them or why. And all through his young life he had a recurring dream of a magnificent city built of finely spun iron and glass that floated on clouds and had an army of “iron men” that defended the city he felt safe when he dreamed about the city because he knew he was the architect of the city and what he said was law and not even his farther could tell him what to do then. A few years later when Geebus was 13 his farther was going in to town to pick up some supplies. he found Geebus in the barn Slacking off so forced him to come along to help carry the items back at which Geebus complained why his farther didn’t take the horse and cart but his farther would have no back talk from an ungrateful son. Where going Now. Oh how he hated is farther. On the way back from the town store they passed the mayors house and found the mayor waiting for them. I need a word Ken. As the mayor and his farther disappeared in to the office saying something about taxes. Geebus got left standing in the foyer of the mayor house so decided to go exploring he’d never been in a house so big, the first room he entered he spied a clock on the mantelpiece he’d never seen one before but had heard of them he was instantly fascinated buy it, all those gears and springs he forgot all about everything else and just had to find out what made it tick grabbing the clock he hurried home so he could discover its mysteries forgetting to even close the door behind him. Meanwhile as the office door opened and the mayor said I’m sorry u had to sell your horse to buy these supplies but those taxes are going to have to be paid ill delay it as long as possible but after that it’s out of my hands you’ve been a good friend over the years Ken and if I had the money Id pay those taxes for u but it’s been a bad few years for all of us, Ken shook the mayor hand and thanked him then noticing that his son was missing but all of his packages that he was meant to be carrying back where still here and the door wide open he must of just gone out for some fresh air, struggling to pick up all the packages he went outside to find his son but no sign of him then the mayor came running out my clock my clock it gone someone has stolen it, when did u last see it, it was there just before our meeting. Ken had this sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach surely my son isn’t a thief he’s a slacker but I still got hope he will grow out of that, arriving back at the farm he dumped the packages and went straight to the barn there he saw Geebus sitting there with the clock in a million pieces gears and springs spread everywhere and what looked like all the items that had gone missing over the past few years. That was the final straw he would send Geebus to work in the stone quarry where may be he would finally put in a full day’s work but his mother didn’t want him working in such a place and had seen a flyer in the town advertising for labours to work in Sharn and she had a distant cousin that was a merchant in the city that could look out for him. This was the greatest day of Geebus’s life he was going to the fabled city of sharn and was even going to ride the Lightning Rail he was so excited that he even forgot the reason why he was going and to say good bye to his mother. As the train pulled into the station at Sharn, Geebus was in awe of the city he couldn’t wait to go exploring he was meet at the station buy a tall man in dark stained uniform and introduced himself as the section chief and that he would organize his work schedule and find him a place to live and indicated that Geebus should follow. They went into the city but instead of going up into the city they went down down down into the bowels of the city to a subterranean region know as the Cogs where the heat was oppressive and great furnaces and foundries fuelled the industries of Sharn, he was shown a place where he could sleep and eat given a dull grey uniform and an apron made of stiff leather he was told that rent and food money would be taken out of his pay and would receive the rest every 2 months. He was taken to one of the furnaces where another young boy was working, you’ll be working with Davie here for the first week to learn the ropes then come and see me and ill update your work schedule. Geebus spent months down is the bowls in the heat and dirt without seeing the light of day he had no idea of how long he had been down there but he did learn a few things while he was down there how to smelt all types of ore and even the secret of steel, luckily his section chief had a keen eye for talent and recommended that he be promoted to maintenance and from there in an astonishingly short time he found himself apprenticed to a Master Artificer of house Cannith and a member of the Fabricators Guild a member of the house but not Dragon marked, he was sent to Morgrave University to learn basic magic, history , mathematics, architecture and mechanics . One day while out on an errand for his master he remembered his mothers cousin and went to visit him he was a small merchant that dealt in “exotic goods” they became fast friends, so Geebus spent his spare time between the University and his cousins place he would repair and shine up some of the merchandise to increase profit and in return his cousin would teach him about shady business deals black racketeering and some of the finer points of law or at least how to get around them. And the years flew by and now his apprenticeship was over and finally he had the tools and the knowledge to fulfil his dream except he knew it was not just a dream but his destiny, now he just needed the funds and experience to achieve his goal, his cousin gave him the name of a contact in House Tharashk that could give some work adventuring, he had a business plan to set up a large companies with outlets in all the major cities as a front for black marketeering and dodgy business deals but first he needed to become famous and start setting up small franchises of GEEBUS CORP he would be his own boss nobody would ever tell him what to do ever again. |

| Terjon of the Blue Rose10-25-07, 12:00 AM | Well your names are a little silly and your grammar and spelling are off.:P Aside from that it's a great story for starting a character off. The only real failing I see in it is that it doesn't end with much of a chance for adventuring (perhaps a need for capital to start your little business would help here). It not long winded really. I've written much worse in that area... I like the character though. He seems a bit artistic in his love of machines and dreams of his city. That, I think, is probably his defining aspect and I would consider using it to help explain what it was the boss saw in him. All in all an excellent story. Edit: I don't know how I missed that last paragraph. Seems my input wasn't needed on the need for capital. |
