I am switching classes from ranger to wizard soon and i need a background concept for my spellcaster (Lv 2) and i was wondering what the collective genious of the boards thought of the following ( Very basic so bear with it)
Born into a normal human family, he was destined to be some sort of artisan( Stone mason? Leather worker?) Untill he developed the startings of becoming a sorcerer, Anxious to see his lot in life, his parents apprenticed him out to an experienced wizard, who turned the raw talent into the refined and disciplined art of wizardry. To release his naturaly creativeness he pants and writes poems, Not excellent, but they work...

So would that background work? If any one has a better idea im all ears, i just throught it developed an alright character, and of course it needs work...
thanks for your advice in advance

I believe that background would work, and i seem to recall there are certain feats that allow you to take a select few 0th level spells and cast them a certain amount of times a day. If im right about this, then these spells could actually be from your sorcerous abilities that you decided not to develop.

As for the whole artistic side of the character, just take ranks in craft, in whatever field you want. Use your magics to aid you in building the objects, and when you get high enough, start making magic items utalizing the very objects that youve built yourself.

If you go stone mason then why dont you build masterwork stone weapons (a long shot i know) but what about golems? having a whole bunch of personally built golems at your disposal is always helpfull :P

Anyway, at this point in time it doesnt really seem likely that your wizard would specalise in any school of magic, just go general.

Hope this helps.

Depending on the craft you take you might use it for a basis of a specialization. For example, if you paint, Illusion might be a natural for getting your sense of color just right. However, if you write poems, they might be the start of an enchantment specialization, for a Charm person, by any other name, would still smell as sweet. Pottery, Evocation (to get the kilm going).

That should give some ideas and I'm sure you can come up with some more on your own.

All the best,

Just make sure you don't choose conjuration or transmutation as prohibited schools, for fabricate and the creation spells. Enchantment would also seem to fit your character well.

Ask your DM to take perform (poetry) or proffession (poet) as class skills. Or, you could use the fact that perform poetry isn't on your class skill as an advancement for your character, namely, that he isn't that good. In fact, that could be used as a crutch if you can't think of anything good, you'd have less stress on yourself.

Questions:

Why does your character even have a level in ranger?

Did he abandon his family craft after becomming a wizard?

Is there anyone in the wizard school who was of importance to your character?

Who, exactly, did he train under?

How well did he do in school?

Does he mantain relations with his family?

Were was he born, and to what financial state was he born in?

If he was born to a poor family, how did they pay for the wizard classes? Does your character feel endebted to his parents because of this payment?

How is his family doing right now?

1. Actually im killing off my ranger and im going to fill the gap for the fact no one wants to play a spellcaster in my party...always up to the oldest i guess...
2. Well kinda, his parents wanted more then his low posistion and sent him to study under a mentor
3. Now that you mention it, he is adventuring looking for his child hood love who went adventuring first....
4. Not sure yet, i will flesh it out tonight when i make him, prolly invent some NPC who never even shows up
5. Did well according to the mentor
6. Yes he does, hes working hard to repay them for all they ndid for him, and will often write a letter or two back home, including a painting or something...
7. He was born into a middle class family, not sure where yet...that comes tonight too
8.I think his family is just shy of poverty,

And to those who think about the class skill perform or craft, i was actually thinking that he just did it for fun, not really doing anything with it, Dm is new after all, dont want to overwhelm him, and plus it was more for Roleplaying than any actual inpact on the game mechanics.....so thats my plan....any other comments?
