| Mattarias03-17-07, 09:14 PM | yes, i said "girly". he wears pink, has an earing, and a 'backpack' that looks more like a purse. .. he also talks to his sword, but that's besides the point. thing is, my party won't give me any respect. last session, for example, i was made fun of, as usual, for my choice of clothing (as if theirs is any better- i'm practically the only one with a positive charisma modifier!), pushed out of the way when i went to take on an evil sorcerer (with a D4 HD, while we were being attacked by a bunch of his fighter buddies), and then attacked by the party barbarian after using my wand of wonder (i stopped him with a well-placed grease spell, though..) does anybody have an idea how i can procure myself some more respect in my group? we're level 3, by the way. i can give more info if necessary. |
| Fithero03-17-07, 09:22 PM | get the bard to be a charmer... get the prettiest girl as often as possible... that would tick off any low int/cha male warrior :D peace |
| Mattarias03-17-07, 09:31 PM | XD heheh, good point. the DM (my girlfriend) might find that iffy, though. she's very strict on the "need 8 hours of sleep!" rule.. hm.. any other ideas, though? |
| DogBackward03-17-07, 09:41 PM | I think it's a lost cause, my friend, unless you find yourself some more mature players. even if you show that you are, without a doubt, a vital member of the party, they'll still make fun of you, only it'll change to false/mocking praise instead of outright ridicule. "Hey, the li'l girlie did something right for a change!" and that sort of rubbish. If it really bothers you, you could change styles/characters/groups, but I don't think there's anything you could do to stop the disrespect while still playing the same character. My experience: take away the reason for the ridicule, and they'll only latch on to something else to make fun of. |
| Mattarias03-17-07, 10:52 PM | :\ hm, i guess that makes sense. my group comprises of my close friends, though, and we're all pretty mature. their characters are just kinda.. well, a bit irksome in their own right, really (a barbarian with a CHA of 6 talking like someone with a charisma of 12, a cleric who just doesn't shut up, a rogue who thinks his charisma of ten is all that (even though he skins kitties) and a druid who's so horribly antisocial that he threatens killing me every few minutes, even with his charisma of 15.) i mean, they're all good guys and all, but sometimes they underestimate me by.. a lot. they even took ranks in diplomacy "just in case" i, the face of the group, die. I mean, really, I know I have the lowest AC and second-lowest HP, but that's just kinda taking it overboard. "gasp! the bard's doing something dangerous! stop him, he'll ruin everything!". .. sorry, guess i had to rant a bit. |
| fil kearney03-18-07, 01:36 AM | anyone who skins kittties in game is not a mature player. the problem it seems yer facing is not being mocked OOC. defend them as much as you want. this will end ugly. |
| Mattarias03-18-07, 12:09 PM | well, to be fair, those kitties were a pain in the ass in the battle we just finished. some wererat lady trained them to do battle. they knocked out the druid's wolf. O.o; and it's not really mocking that's the problem, i'm just not being respected. like i said. they underestimate me more than anything else. |
| retillin03-18-07, 01:35 PM | I'm gonna guess they are Hack & Slash type players. If you do not do dmg in the battle either through magic or sword, then you mean nothing to them. Play up your strengths as a bard. Use your songs to give them a bonus to hit, be a total utility player. My fav mage I ever played very rarely ever cast an offensive spell. The whole battle I just made the knight and minotaur fighter stronger and stronger. It was like a Dupont comercial. "I dont make Team Kill, I make Team Kill stronger" |
| Mattarias03-18-07, 01:42 PM | heh, i see. well, trust me, i've been doing my share of (well, the only) buffing in the party, and i rarely go a day of in-game time when i don't run out of bardic music. not to mention, i also do a fair bit of damage with my longsword.. when i hit, and with my limited uses of burning hands (DM allowed it due to my backstory. runaway prince of a desert nation devoted to fire, and all.)- i practically solo'd a white dragon wyrmling with that alone. i don't know if damage per round is much of a factor here. |
| JulesCARV03-18-07, 03:58 PM | Don't try to gain their respect. Let them underestimate you. Maybe even encourage them. Then they'll plan around you not being of any value. Then you make your own plans to help them, and use your abilities to help them succeed even better, even though maybe you weren't strictly necessary. Don't bother taking credit. Just crack a few jokes, maybe at the tavern tell a few tall tales about how great the other people in the party did, while subtly omitting your own role. If they start respecting you more, then that's good. If not, then enjoy the game anyway. |
| fiendish_platypus03-18-07, 04:14 PM | You could become a super powerful archmage-type bard. It really works, less BM (Bardic Music=Bowel Movement ie:poo) more Spellcasting. Sublime Chord and Lyrist Thaumaturge :D . |

If they start respecting you more, then that's good. If not, then enjoy the game anyway. eh, it's not in my character's nature to sink into the background. i've been on the front lines most of the time, actually. (i'm basically the backup fighter guy) so the whole "don't be a part of stuff" is kinda.. ick. at least to my character. i understand where you're coming from, though, and i'd follow that advice mysel, if my character wasn't suvh a flamboyant, egomaniacal pyro. :embarrass You could become a super powerful archmage-type bard. It really works, less BM (Bardic Music=Bowel Movement ie:poo) more Spellcasting. Sublime Chord and Lyrist Thaumaturge :D . hmm.. i have been considering this, but i did bardic music, myself. it's kinda the only thing that's kept me going for a while. :\ those two classes DO look good, but their prereqs are kinda.. "eh" in my opinion. |
| jeffseadot03-18-07, 10:34 PM | Just for clarification, is it the players that don't respect your bard or the characters that don't respect your bard? |
| Mattarias03-18-07, 10:52 PM | Just for clarification, is it the players that don't respect your bard or the characters that don't respect your bard? well, kinda both, you see. out of character, we joke about my 'squishyness', which is well and all, i guess. yet their characters just, well.. i'll explain in detail. The Druid is antisocial, and threatens to kill and EAT me, because he "finds bards annoying". The Cleric tends to ignore me most of the time, but wants to seperate me from my wand of wonder (hey, magical darkness never really hurt anybody..) and doesn't let up on the "wtf is up ith you and that sword?!" thing. (it's actually a weapon of legacy, still 'locked', though. my character only talks to it 'cause he's a little :looloo: ) The barbarian sees my ideas as stupid and me as 'puny pink guy'. The rogue is kinda.. distant from me, but taunts me every now and then. and they all see my character as girly, "metro", whatever that is, and "possibly gay" which he is obviously not. |
| jeffseadot03-19-07, 12:50 AM | There's a trick I like to use that's a lot of fun and pretty effective. At the very least, it should make the characters shut up. If the characters think you're possibly gay, make them think you're actually gay. Make them think this by constantly and overtly flirting with them. The standard reaction is a few insults (nothing you haven't dealt with before, apparently) followed by an angry sort of peace. Maybe you'll even provoke an attack, which would give you an opportunity to show off just how dangerous and effective you can actually be. |
| fiendish_platypus03-19-07, 06:59 AM | hmm.. i have been considering this, but i did bardic music, myself. it's kinda the only thing that's kept me going for a while. :\ those two classes DO look good, but their prereqs are kinda.. "eh" in my opinion. you can get Lyrist Thaumaturge after 5 levels of bard (if you have cityscape), then go 5 levels of that and then 10 levels of Sublime Chord |
| Doleth03-19-07, 10:28 AM | The Druid is antisocial, and threatens to kill and EAT me, because he "finds bards annoying". The rogue is kinda.. distant from me, but taunts me every now and then. and they all see my character as girly, "metro", whatever that is, and "possibly gay" which he is obviously not. For your information, a metrosexual is a man that act and dress very effeminate, so they look like a stereotype homosexual without being one. So, your bard actually is one. For your problem, just treat them the same way. I mean, make fun of the dirty hippie, the freaky religious guy, the big macho guy and the sneaky bastard! |
| Mattastrophic03-19-07, 03:52 PM | I think I can provide some insight, since I had the same problem you did with my own "girly" elf Virtuoso. However, four years and fourteen levels later, Respect is his middle name. First of all, "fighting back" only ends poorly. Just take the punches and roll with it in-character. Your party members don't respect you, and they don't respect your combat role, and they honestly never will. So it's time for the bard to step into the spotlight where he belongs. So stop buffing those lowlifes, be a man, and do something with your life! My own guy dropped party buffing completely, took Wizard levels and Virtuoso levels, and now he's a badass arcanist with badass Cha-based skill modifiers! He still wears his heart-shaped symbol of Hanali Celanil, CG Intermediate Elven Goddess of Beauty, Love, Romance, Fine Arts, Artists, and Enchantments, and still is a devoted follower, but now his enemies tremble in fear at the sight of this shining beacon of humanity! Snide comments from players and the DM became rounds of applause after a well-placed Wall of Force or Empowered Ray of Enfeeblement, from the same guy who auto-makes Diplomacy checks, Performs like a legend, and still manages to dress impeccably, get invited to all the nobles' parties, and never have a bed that's anything less than smokin. Does he have good Str/Dex/Con? Enhance his melee ability with Fighter or Rogue. Bard/Rogue/UnseenSeer is pretty strong. Good Int? Wizard. Dumped everything into Cha? Sorcerer. Or Sublime Chord. You don't have to sit in the back and support people who don't appreciate it. Would your character put up with always tagging along a group of jerks who make fun of him, or would he focus on self-improvement and be his own hero? So get rid of that earring, trade that purse for a Haversack, stop talking to your sword, bed some lovely virgins, and let your character come into his own! -Matt |
| Mattarias03-19-07, 06:15 PM | wow, thanks for all the advice everyone. i guess i'll respond in order. ^^; jeffseadot: eh, nah, i'd rather not, that's just a bit akward, and doesn't really make sense with my character's attitude. he's not homophobic, not at all, but like i said, the druid's the only one with a charisma BONUS, and i'm staying AWAY from that elf. fiendish_platypus: eh, my DM doesn't really dig cityscape, and we're not using complete arcane yet. so i guess that doesn't really work.. good idea, though. :) Doleth: hm, thanks for the clarification. yeah, i've been considering that 'make fun of THEM' thing, but that might just make them hate me more than anything else. :/ i dunno.. Mattasrophic (XD heh, our nicknames are simillar..) : dude, your character is the man. :D my stats are str: 10, con: 13, dex: 14, wis: 12, int: 14, cha: 16. nothing too terribly good. (i'm only level three, by the way.) so.. i dunno. i've been contemplating sorcerer, but i'd lose spellcasting power. sublime chord looks pretty good, but again, not using complete arcane, at least not yet. and i'd rather keep my earring and my sword-talkyness (no way to get rid of it, for now, at least.), but the haversack and women are good ideas. :D -also, think paladin'd be a good fit? he has the whole 'honor' thing going on, but the code and lawful alignment seem kinda restrictive.. either way, i've been getting some really good advice here. ^^ thanks for keeping up with my semi-rants, all. |
| jeffseadot03-19-07, 07:40 PM | Well, it's your choice to make, but my plan works disturbingly well. Just hope your girlfriend doesn't start to get jealous... |
| Zylo_Drizzt03-19-07, 07:47 PM | This is what I would do. First go seeker of the song. If you don't care for that much then don't do much of anything until your group is in a tight situation then unleash the fury of the bard :evillaugh it always gets respect/awe factor when you do something like save the whole party. You might want to work with your DM to to get into this tight spot that only you can really save the day. also you might want to try something that the group has never seen before like using the living orc's skull to bash in a wall. |
| Mattarias03-19-07, 08:55 PM | ^^; eheh, yeah, the disturbing way doesn't bode too well, unfortunately.. i like Zylo's idea, though. dramatic things ARE good.. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose03-20-07, 01:08 AM | Dunno if yer DM will allow it but try asking http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0390.html do a search there are quite a few potential write-ups of the class so you should be able to find one you like. I think there may even be one or two on the boards here at wizards. the results? http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0393.html |
| Mattastrophic03-20-07, 11:31 AM | Well, the main point I'm making here is that your party doesn't appreciate your buffing, so find something that'll let him stand on his own. -Matt |
| CrimsonDeath03-20-07, 03:14 PM | Fortunately, I never had this problem. My party respects my bard's ability to buff-- so much that when I go Sublime Chord, I'm still going to focus on buffing. One session, try counting up the damage that the party deals specifically because of your buffs. If you're singing, count up the extra damage from bard song, as well as all the damage from any swing that only hits because of the bonus to hit that you granted. It may convince the players that you're more useful than you immediately appear. (Incidentally, I got this idea from a thread on a Diablo 2 forum that mentioned, in a party with an curse-based Necromancer with Amp Damage, half the damage that all the melee types deal can actually be attributed to the Necro.) |

Sounds like the poster's group isn't ready to make such a revelation about support characters. -Matt |
| Sands_Of_Chaos03-20-07, 10:36 PM | That guy is right my friend. My halfling wizard can bend the wills of anyone in his party to do any sort of twisted sadistic bidding he wants, but they still find it hillarious to make short jokes at his expense. You can't escape simple perception jokes: just accept that they are innevitable. |
| Mattarias03-20-07, 10:48 PM | dashing swordsman. oh man. I love that class, but my DM isn't too kosher on fan-stuff. trust me, i've considered it. she bopped me over the head. :( and the problem isn't really my buffing. i mean, they're neutral about it than anything else. I'd like to do some of that 'standing on my own' stuff, though. Guess that might be doable once i strt unlocking my weapon's abilities.. whatever those are.. EDIT: (hey, my first simu-post..) well, thing is, i'm kinda a stubborn jerk, as is my character, kinda. so accepting inevitability isn't really possible. eheh.. |
| Mattastrophic03-21-07, 11:21 AM | I'd like to do some of that 'standing on my own' stuff, though. Guess that might be doable once i strt unlocking my weapon's abilities.. whatever those are.. It's a longsword, right? *puts on his Optimization Hat* Frostburn has a feat called Snowflake Wardance. Requires 6x Perform(dance). As a free action, you can spend a bardsong to start up a Snowflake Wardance, lasting one round per rank in Perform(dance). While in the Wardance, you add your Charisma bonus to attack rolls made with any one-handed slashing weapon (i.e. a longsword) Now, I noticed you guys aren't using many books, and that's okay. Point being... the choices for a Bard3 branching out a little to stand on his own are out there. -Matt |
| NerdNumber103-21-07, 02:15 PM | What is with the pink outfits! Could you explain more about your character so we can better make changes that won't ruin the flavor of your character. If you are a pyro, include a few fire tricks to help your performance. And if at all possible, lose the pink stuff. It just isn't the color for someone (male) who wants to be taken seriously. |
| grasharm03-21-07, 02:34 PM | I hate to say but I think you may have a deeper problem as well. You admit that everyone in your group is your friend and they are all just playing thier charecters. Well I have the same problem but part of the reason it is a problem is because I'm so easy going as a person. My friends know that if they insult, belittle or otherwise abuse my charecters in game that my charecter will just take it because I'm not going to take it too far and ruin the game. This will continue untill you start playing your charecter a little more like a person and less like a PC. My rule of thumb is after the 5th wisecrack about my char. in a day (in game) from a single char. or 8th from the group as a whole my charecters will do something. Something big and potentialy game ruining. This leaves it up to the other players to swallow some pride and back things down from the cliff. It took me a LONG time to realize this but in this instance it's the other players that are ruining the game and not me. Sure I'm the one pulling the trigger but they are the ones loading the gun per-say by giving my char. a reason to do whatever it is that I'm about to do. Weather it's challenge the barbarian to a duel to the death over slighting my honor for the 5th time today. Or simply turning around and going back to town because it's obvious that you feel that the expidition is better off without the metro. Now normally I don't advocte this kind of role playing. In fact I usally decry it but it comes down to if you keep taking it for the team and no one else is then that's just wrong. I hope I'm wrong about this and you just say no thanks to this post but it was a very real thing for me and almost ruined role playing for me and I'd hate to see anyone else go through that. |
| Mattarias03-21-07, 08:32 PM | ^^; eheh, thanks guys, lots of nifty responses here. i'll respond in order: yes, Mononoke IS a longsword, but we aren't using frostburn, nor do i have ranks in perform: dance. ^^; i've thought of running that past my DM, but she prefers staying almost as core as possible.... or at least us players staying core. :embarrass libris mortis= scary. uhm, lessee, character info... well, he's a.. bard, what can i say? he's a pansy in the sense that his battle cry is constantly "you're paying for my shirt!".. usually after i've been magic missle'd, or something.. he's a womanizer, a trait he picked up from his two teachers (more on them in a bit), and has a flair for the dramatic. he hates 'icky' things, dangerous things, and water. uhm, so getting rid of the affects is a bit out of the question. it's like taking away drizzt's swords and painting him tan. it just doesn't work. O.o; -also, about his teachers, he learned magic from a sorcerer, and bard-ness from his lover, from whom he got his sword. he also believes her to be dead. any more info needed? oh, and grasharm, trust me, i've considered that, but thing is, i can't really fight them or anything, since i'm barely a match for the druid, really, let alone the barbarian who could cut up the druid and cleave me with the backswing. though i guess it would kinda make sense with how my character is. maybe.. .. next level, at least. i get shatter. shatter is useful. o.o; |
| NerdNumber103-21-07, 10:50 PM | That "flair for the dramatic" could include fire tricks and his "you're paying for my shirt!" could be backed up by anger. Orc: "Hah hah, wine drinking elf pansy." Bard: "Oh I wouldn't say that if I were you." Orc: "Why not, puny elf. You can't stop me." Bard: "Elven wine, so bold, so rich, so flamable..." *sprays flaming wine through a candle into the orc's face* "I'll send you a bill." Orc: "ouch." |

Orc: "ouch." :D yes! win! now to perfect a wine-spraying technique.. i've been tending to use oil and burning hands/ prestidigitation to light enemies on fire, but that's a bit more stylish.. i've been thinking of replacing my waterskin, anyways... hmm.. |
| grasharm03-21-07, 11:39 PM | Just because you challenge the barbarian to a duel of honor doesn't mean you have to fight. Get his acceptance then tell him as the slighted party you choose the contest and challenge him to a singing contest and watch the negative chr hurt his roll. Aftwards refer to him as the defeated one and tell tell him he will remain so known until he makes amends for the slights that led up to the duel. Of course if after accepting he says no way is he going to be part of a singing contest tell him you understand and grasiously accept his forfit and back to the defeated on he goes. Also I'd make best 2 out of 3 songs before the contest begins to cut down on stupid luck rolling. i.e. he rolls a nat 20 you roll a 5 of course you may be able to beat him hands down just by taking 10. let's see babarian with no ranks in perform and a 6 cha so -2 so a max of 18 on the skill check. You have +2 and probally max ranks so 6 hrmm tie but you have the higher stat mod so tie goes to you. So take 10 and afterwards rub it in that you weren't even really trying as well. Of course the idea is to make the other person be the one back down for the sake of the game because really that's what your already doing. If you had a group of people constantly netteling you for weeks would you really stick around the next time you were in town and could just perfom for your room and board. So basicly your not playing your charecter by not doing that unless of course your charecter really is a co-depent abuser. (someone who feels the need to be abused usally as a result of a previous abusive relationship) It's time to make someone else take one for the team to keep the group together and not need to find a way to add in a new pc. |
| NerdNumber103-21-07, 11:43 PM | Glad you liked it. Here are some more pyro ideas: oil flasks-1sp-cheap alchemist's fire alchemist's fire sprayer (Arms and Equipment Guide) made into a flame thrower everlasting wands (Eberron campaign)-allows you to use flashy sorcerer spells necklace of fireball You should apear calm, cool, and collected at all times. If you wish to retaliate, make sure you do so elegantly. Even if you are weaker in all ways to your adversary, project a quiet superiority and apear the master of the situation. I wonder what a drop of alchemist's fire would do in a mug of ale. Set it ablaze, most likely. And wouldn't be a shame if such a glass was "accidentally" spill into someones lap. |
| grasharm03-22-07, 12:24 AM | Well that will work for the barbarian but you have three others in the group so what the hey. I don't usally flex my mean mussle. As I've said I'm easygoing almost to a fault and probally beyond and to a fault so I may as well flex it for someone else even if I won't flex it much for myself. Druid- Next time he says something hurtful or mean to you make a diplomacy or bluff check and try to make him feel bad about doing so. While your at it start ripping up the local folliage and shredding it in your moment of distress. If you do it right he should be stuck between feeling sorry for hurting your feelings and needing to protect the local flora as a druid. If you see a bug while ripping up the foliage kill it. Or take out your frustrations with your sword on a bush or tree. Passive agressive is the way to go here I think. rouge- got an extra prestidigitation. well it's time to get him back for skinning those kitties. When he starts to sneak off break a twig near his foot and snicker and point. just be shure you cast for some other reason first and you just use it when you still have duration on it but the task you needed it for is done. (and of course when it's not going to hurt the party. You just want to make the rouge look foolish not tpk the party.) Also he thinks his 10 cha is all that? next time your in a tavern challenge him to see who can get the name of a local hottie first. Or some other chr type task. keep up the friendly rivaltry but don't make your girlfriend jelous by taking them back to bed. As for your complaint about the other charecters crowding you out of meele combat well all I have to say is with your group makeup it's going to happen that way. The rouge needs to be flanking to be of the most possible use with his sneak attack at least until he gets enough ranks in hide and point blank shot to allow him to snipe if he even wants to go that route. The Druid will not be a back line caster for several more levels (at wich point if you haven't done something to make you more of a blaster the druid is going to wear double duty hat as blaster/healer) and will probally prefer to mix it up in meele combat in a combat wildshape form. Lastly the barbarian is a barbarian. Enough said there. In otherwords right now everyone else in your group is basicly meele combat chars. It might be time to invest in a bow or a brace of daggers to throw because the front line is going to be crowded for the fore seeable future. |
| CrimsonDeath03-22-07, 04:47 AM | What kind of animal companion (if any) does the druid have? |
| Mattarias03-22-07, 09:15 PM | :D :D :D I LOVE these ides. heheh, wow. never thought of a music contest.. i don't sing, though. my character finds it insulting to the memory of his old master if he sang. still, sweet idea.. hmm.. i do like alchemist's fire.. heh, flaming martini.. refined AND dangerous. i'm liking this. :) oil seems to be the only other affordable thing at the moment, though. we're way behind on the wealth-by-level guidelines. only level three. ^^; the druid's more of a carnivore than a treehugger, though.. wolf animal companion.. eats squirrels. O.o; but point, point.. hmm.. (-the rogue doesn't need any help from me to fail at sneaking, trust me.) eheh, i'm really digging all the advice i'm getting here. i should've consulted the CD boards ages ago. :D |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose03-23-07, 02:31 AM | dashing swordsman. oh man. I love that class, but my DM isn't too kosher on fan-stuff. trust me, i've considered it. she bopped me over the head. just cause you can't have the prestige class doesn't mean you can't play the character:) being a dashing swordsman is about ATTITUDE |
| fiendish_platypus03-23-07, 07:27 AM | i do like alchemist's fire.. heh, flaming martini.. refined AND dangerous. i'm liking this. :) oil seems to be the only other affordable thing at the moment, though. we're way behind on the wealth-by-level guidelines. only level three. ^^; There's a second level spell in the PHB 11 that functions like grease but is flammable. I'm not sure if bards can get it though. |
| The_sleeper103-23-07, 09:45 AM | I would sudgest the next time the biggest meanest one makes fun of you wearing pink that you charm them and make them wear your pink clothing and then get a new outfit in black or brown. :chuckles at the though a large barb wearing a pink halter top thats way too small and pink leather skirt while trying to look tough.: |

AAH. i have to go wash my brain now.   (before that, though, my DM already allows grease to be flammable, so no need to waste a preious 2nd level slot for that.. -and terjon, you do have a point.) |
| NerdNumber103-23-07, 06:48 PM | Charm only makes the target your friend, it doesn't make them obey you. If your friend told you to wear pink, would you immediately do so? Even so, you could try bluffing someone to make them think that the pink outfit is enchanted. |
| CrimsonDeath03-23-07, 07:02 PM | the druid's more of a carnivore than a treehugger, though.. wolf animal companion.. eats squirrels. O.o; but point, point.. hmm.. That's how I typically play my druids... Next time the druid gets up in your grill, just tell him to "Sit, boy!" Maybe take a few cross-class ranks in Handle Animal (with your Charisma, it won't take many for a 10 to get the thing to behave) and put girly accessories (bows, collars, etc) on the wolf when the druid isn't looking. |

Also, she doesn't sig your +14 Diplomacy? WTF? That's what Bards DO! She'll have to get used to it pretty soon, as that's only going to get higher. Much higher. -Matt |
| Mattarias03-26-07, 07:07 PM | yeah, i know. i wasn't really serious. prestidigitation is funner to mess with them with. *ahem* seriously, though, we (finally) had another session, and frankly, situation doesn't seem to be improving. first thing to happen? the barbarian tackles and grapples me for my wand of wonder... >.>; fortunately, though, by the end, it looks like we've made our peace, though. ... even if we did do nothing the DM planned for and went to the completely wrong city.. ^^; eheh.. -on a sidenote, i got myself a scroll of legend lore, found out information on my weapon, AND i almost have enough cash to get myself a mithril chain shirt. finally. -also, yeah, i know, but it seems DMs in general dislike PCs with uber diplomacy modifiers. any way to remedy this? |
| fiendish_platypus03-26-07, 07:32 PM | ...found out information on my weapon... 0.o So, what's it do??? |
| Mattarias03-26-07, 07:51 PM | 0.o So, what's it do??? ooh, well, i don't know all the details, but i found it to be the weapon of one of my old mentors, who was actually named after the sword ("Mononoke"), and it had some pretty powerful sonic-based abilities along with some bardic stuff too, apparently. it was used to practically save the world one time, but it (and its "sister sword"'s) powers were locked away to prevent some old BBEG my character's father and both of my old mentors helped defeat from getting it. Its omen seems to be that it can be used basically as a tuning fork... O.o; .. sorry for the rambling, but i'm very bored and hyper at the moment. my apologies. |
| Mattastrophic03-27-07, 10:15 AM | -also, yeah, i know, but it seems DMs in general dislike PCs with uber diplomacy modifiers. any way to remedy this? How to remedy it? Give your DM a crash course in adjudicating Diplomacy. Get yourself a +50ish and start using it. 'Cause that's what bards do. You say things aren't improving? Here we go... I think it's time to sell off that wand of wonder and start upgrading your equipment. It sounds like your legacy weapon will require you to, well, use it. Thus, maybe it's time to enhance your melee ability. Screw Burning Hands, it won't carry you much longer. Also, you'd better be able to stand on your own, because that Barbarian is a failed Dominate Person waiting to happen, and when he decides to take your sword, you'd better be able to defend yourself. Or that Rogue might decide to steal it for himself, which means you'd better be able to beat the crap out of him for trying. If you keep going down the same path, something bad is going to happen, stemming from how little your party respects you. I do recall you having Str10, Dex14, Con13, Int14, Wis12, Cha16. Not much to work with, especially that Str10, but let's see... you're a Bard3 whose party members don't think they need buffing. Good, that means we can focus on self-buffing... Inspirational Boost (Complete Adventurer & SpellCompendium) is a swift-action 1st-level spell that would bump your Inspire Courage to +2 to hit/+2 to damage. (May I suggest slowly moving towards excluding your former allies from your Inspire Courage? They obviously don't think they need it. Don't be abrupt; maybe start activating it and just not remind them about what it does. If they ask, say something like "oh yeah, you get +X" like you're forgetting as well. Then later on, just... not include them. Don't say you're not, just... neglect to.) Critical Strike (Complete Adventurer & SpellCompendium) is a swift-action 1st-level spell that grants +1d6 damage, doubled threat range, and +4 to confirm critical hits, all while flanking. Bards get Tumble, so setting up a flank isn't too hard. Bladeweave (Complete Adventurer(iirc) & SpellCompendium) is a swift action 2nd-level spell that you cast after hitting an opponent, forcing a Will save or be Dazed for one round. Mirror Image (PHB) is a mighty good 2nd-level bard defensive spell. Alter Self (PHB) can give you +6 or more to AC if you morph into a Troglodyte. More depending on which books you can use. If there's a question of whether you have knowledge of the form, you're a bard. You have Knowledge skills. Haste (PHB) really closes the gap between you and the full-BAB Barbarian, especially if you only cast it on yourself. If you're going to use that sword, your biggest problem is your Str10. Snowflake Wardance, which I posted above, will greatly help by adding your Cha to your attack rolls when using any one-handed slashing weapon, i.e. a longsword. A Mithral Breastplate is light armor, thus meaning you can still cast spells while wearing it. It'll also be the last suit of armor you'll ever need. A Mithral Buckler has 0% Arcane Spell Failure, so that would be the last shield you'd ever need. As for advancement... more Bard levels would give you more songs and more spells, both of which are very useful. At 6th you get Suggestion and at 8th you get Inspire Courage +2 (+3 w/ Inspirational Boost), but you don't need Inspire Greatness, as you have no allies to target. A level of Fighter would grant a bonus feat, if you need it. Which feats do you have now? Holy Liberator (Complete Divine) is a pretty stong Chaotic Paladin. Four levels of it would add your Cha to your saving throws. Also, I suggest that as he starts to stand on his own, phase out the pink-wearing, purse-bearing guy and make him more manly. Women like that. They might hang around a "girly" bard, but they won't sleep with him. -Matt's bard also went from zero to hero. |
| Mattarias03-27-07, 09:03 PM | uhm, first of all, a +50 in diplomacy just sounds mean.. O.o; .. second, i never really said they don't need buffing, they just, numerically, hit lots more than me (the barb has a +7 to hit! ), and tend to forget to add in the +1s from my battlecries. also, we're not allowed to use noncore spells, but the ones you recommend ARE pretty good. snowflake wardance is still out, though, due to frostburn not being used, and i've been thinking just a mithril chain shirt. breastplate is kinda heavy, and i had to sell my shortbow, arrows, and waterskin to barely get to the bare limits of a light load. but point, i DO think i need some more melee ability. a couple fighter levels do seem good, but i dunno, i kinda like my spells. my current feats are: skill focus (perform), and eschew materials. i HAVE been thinking of holy liberator, but we aren't using complete divine. -and yes, i have been thinking of geting a new 'arabian nights' -style outfit for my character. it would fit, and might have less pink. |
| Mattastrophic03-27-07, 10:52 PM | uhm, first of all, a +50 in diplomacy just sounds mean.. O.o; No, not mean. Epic. | Eridrau03-28-07, 03:09 PM | Prestidigitation is your friend here. Think about it, you can flavour, soil, clean, etc. anything within 20 feet. They taunt you, for the next hour their clothes are dirty, damp and bright flaming pink. Also, anything they eat tastes like re-fried mud. Remember, this lasts an hour, so if you chase after them, you can keep them wet, muddy and pink. If you want to be cruel, use it to sew little red hearts on to the seats of their pants... ALL over their pants. Plus it can undo any minor thing they attempt to get you back with. If the rogue steals something of yours in the night, simply pour a little wine onto his food at breakfast. Presti-heat. FWOOF. (This is why you should take profession (cook) too, three ranks should be plenty.) Really, there's so much you can do with this spell and a little imagination. I suggest waiting for the best moment, and doing the following. Using this just before visiting a noble of some sort will generally shut people up. When the nobility outright refuses to address your party members out of disgust... well... (Remember to appologize profusely for them and that they didn't seem to understand the basics of dealing with their superiors. If all else fails, use the basic adventurer's rule and set one of them on fire. |
| MatthiasKaiser03-28-07, 05:46 PM | No offense, but I think you might be trying to achieve the impossible, Mattarias. You're inviting ridicule, and then expecting respect. You won't get it, in character or out of it, not because your fellow players or their characters are jerks, but because you're asking them to fight their natures. It's like kicking people in the shins and then expecting them to smile about it because you tell them it's a joke. You're not going to have a lot of success, no matter how persuasive you are. The pink? Not that big an issue. It's a color. It's a bit of flavor, and if you go to a bit an effort to prove yourself in spite of it, it can be a really cool bit of flavor. Donovan Deegan (http://www.dominic-deegan.com/) is a great example of this sort of character - a bad*** musician/swordsman that believes "real men wear pink." Personally, I'd choose to reserve the pink for when you're dressing for social occasions - pink is hard to preserve in adventuring clothing, after all - but it's definitely not impossible to be awesome while wearing pink. The earring? It shouldn't be an issue either. It's established that your character wears an earring. It's a unique bit of flavor. Don't make a big deal of it, and you'll be okay. Even better, you could potentially wear an enchanted earring that gives worthwhile effects. The part of your description that really, really hurts you is your "purse." Why on Earth are you carrying a purse? Even girl adventurers aren't that girly, because if they're going to survive at all as adventurers, they've got to be practical. And a purse isn't practical. It slips during combat, constantly requiring you to hold or adjust it or it interferes with you. No adventurer would ever carry one. Even when not adventuring, why would a male character carry a modern-style purse, as opposed to belt pouches or something similar? No reason at all, except to be as woman-like as possible - and we're not talking about capable adventuring women either. I understand your party's reaction completely. If someone went out of their way to appear weak, and didn't prove me very wrong, I would treat them as I would a weak person. I definitely wouldn't want them watching my back in a combat situation. Another thing you'll want to seriously consider is reading up on character optimization. Generally, people big on roleplaying tend to look down on "minmaxing" in this way, but I consider it vital to good roleplaying. After all, you can't roleplay a confident, powerful warrior when he folds like a paper towel in combat while his companions are doing rather well, for instance. If you do, you're not really roleplaying, because you're ignoring what happens when the game rules actually come into effect. When rules are applicable, you have to make sure they match your concept as close as possible. Otherwise, your party just won't take you seriously. |
| fiendish_platypus03-28-07, 07:54 PM | 0.o Attack of the Clones much Mattarias, Mattastrophic, MatthiasKaiser ...holy jeeze, now I'm scared. |
| Mattarias03-28-07, 08:49 PM | wow, more respones.. looks like a Matt- convention is starting.. sweet. -bit i digress. let me answer in order again: stopping wars DOES sound good.. but no, there's no way to switch around my feats. my DM disapproves of the PHBII's retraining rules. (we players are allowed to use the PHB, PHBII, CAdv, skill tricks from scoundrel, maybe stuff from Carcane, and possibly sandstorm. -and posibly some stuff from dragon mag. i just ordered issue 314, beause the fire stuff there seems like it'll add some flavor to my bard.) i DO like the idea of throwing around prestidigitation, though.. hmm.. that's like, most of my spell slots, though.. and no, no, newcomer fellow Matt. it IS a normal backpack, but it's carried more like the slung-over-the-shoulder college bag type way. it isn't a literal modern purse. that's just rediculus. sorry if i phrased things akwardly. and yes, Donovan Deegan DID have some influence in my character design (it was orange, pink, or red. he clinched it for pink.) but i AM thinking of getting my character a more 'arabian nights'-style outfit. more red. -and i HAVE been thinking of a bit of optimization.. how does a bard 8/heartfire fanner 5/seeker of the song 1/ fighter 2(?)/ sublime chord 4 sound? don't really know much about that stuff, but i know that'll give me a fair bit of firepower to work with. |
| fiendish_platypus03-29-07, 08:14 AM | Thats not enough levels of Sublime Chord, I don't even think that'll get you level 7 spells. :( |
| Ayra03-29-07, 10:18 AM | Why not stick with it? Keep in mind that when playing a character, you don't necessarily play the most perfect character there is. I personally find it very interesting to play a character with bigger flaws, rather than playing the generic "perfect" hero. The fact you chose to wear pink clothes and talk to your sword makes me think so do you! When reading this I was kind of reminded of Murdock from the A-Team. He's insane, gets no respect concerning his social ability but the team respects his skills as a pilot, because without him they'd be nothing. Your party merely has to notice how useful you are. Additionally, since you're the one with the highest charisma, I suppose you'll be the one doing the talking for the group. Looking for an inn? Too bad, the best inn in town only has one room left and it's yours. The rest will have to sleep in farmer Joe's barn. While your metrosexual self remains clean and stylish, your party members will be smelling of cow the next morning. Does your bard write poetry? Tell stories about your party's courageous deeds? Find one target in your party and mock his inability to be a good hero (Put emphasis on every time he misses an attack, he gets hit or fails to use a skill). Write a small and witty rhyme about it and perform it in the local bar. Just because his character failed to score a hit, you'll exaggerate that into something horribly embarrassing. If you're lucky, the rest of the party will go in on it and your party has found a new black sheep if you can keep it up long enough. Pulling tricks on that one specific person might be a good idea too. How about enchanting his weapon with ghost sound or something along those lines, that mocks his inability to deal damage every time he strikes with it? (Yes yes, this one is quite old, but funny regardless! "You hit like a girl!") The true powers of a bard are by far not his magic, but his ability to ridicule (or praise) every single PC. Sure your party will mock you, but what if the whole town mocks your party with the exception of you? Think of monthy python and the Holy Grail: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071853/quotes |
| Mattarias03-29-07, 09:39 PM | heh, thanks ayra. that's kinda what i as going for. i have been in a bit of a slump concerning my poetry, but good point.. hmm.. -although, the cleric with his five (read it, 5) charisma tends to steal the spotlight with the talking, which is rediculous in my opinion, but i guess he roleplays it well. he starts talking and doesn't shut up until one of us stops him ("i grapple his face!"), and whatnot. we're kinda competeing to be the group 'leader', i guess. -i'm not familliar with the murdok fellow, but he seems pretty cool, though. prestidigitation's just getting cooler and cooler by the second, really. ^^; heh.. Although.. I have been thinnking of drafting a bit of a group charter/contract for us, which'd set up some general rules such as no uncalled-for PVP, no how to split up treasure, and the like. the group all seem to find it a good idea. thing is, we need to decide upon a leader. any ideas as how to go about this? -this may seem pompous, but i think that the one with the highest charisma should be the leader, but i KNOW at least the cleric would want that title. -I was thinking of proposing a title of 'leader' to me, but assign the others positions, too, like "adviser", "combat spescialist", that kind of jazz. i dunno how they might react, though.. EDIT: and i'd rather not be eaten, thank you. the druid already threatens that... |

EDIT: and i'd rather not be eaten, thank you. the druid already threatens that... I think there's a big difference between leader of the group and the one who does the talking. Indeed, you should be the one to do the talking (your charisma should give you a much better way with words. For example, since cha influences diplomacy, it could be used in a way to explain things. If there's a tactic, the fighter might understand it and can explain it, but if you understand it as well, you would be far better in explaining it to the rest of the group.) I don't think a party needs a leader. A leader is basically someone who creates the rules. Having kindof a weird reputation in your group already limits you from doing that directly, so you'd have to do it discreetly. Basically, you do the talking for the group. Getting a new quest? It's you who'll be making the demands. If your cleric starts blabbering, remind him of his terribly low charisma. Your DM is bound to give penalties for that in a normal conversation (as in, he might be terribly rude, blunt or simply doesn't understand the concept of letting someone finish his lines before speaking). So basically if you do the talking, you will be getting a far better result in the end. Example: Your party has been sent to help the local guards capture a group of bandits. The guards are certain they can solve this alone, and hate for some would-be adventurers to join in and take all the credit. If your cleric approaches them, he will only make things worse. In the end you'll end up without any information regarding the bandits, nor with any further help from the guard. If you approach them, you might get the location of the bandits and possibly even help from the guards (who notice you're a very nice guy and nothing like the stereotype they had in mind). If there's a female guard in there you might even get some action! (Though with your girlfriend being DM :/) If your cleric approaches them regardless, you can do the same. Push him away, apologize for his behavior and explain how he is still recovering from a nearly fatal stab wound through his head. Suggest to take a -2 diplomacy check penalty when talking to the guards (his doing) in order to rectify his behavior. Once the guards walk away, raise your sword, face it and tell it how happy you are things worked out fine after all! Your party will notice that even though your marginally insane, you are very useful to them specifically so in the social skill section. Sooner or later they will come to terms with your insanity, if it means they won't die and suffer experience loss because they didn't know the bandits are all antropomorphic elephants. |
| Mattarias03-30-07, 08:55 PM | eh, yeah, point, i guess. it's just the rest of the group are bloomin' idiots when it comes to choosing a path and whatnot. it's like in some RPGs where you accidentally go on a sidequest instead of choosing the main quest. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. it's taken my all to keep our group on track and together, practically. too much infighting... but yeah, i think i'll stick with that. the whole social thing i mean. |
| Mattastrophic04-02-07, 05:45 PM | If there's a female guard in there you might even get some action! (Though with your girlfriend being DM :/) I don't know... in my own experience, female DMs have had a way of liking that, depending of course on just how I go about 'getting some action.' I.E. Be romantic. -Matt |
| Mattarias04-02-07, 08:08 PM | I don't know... in my own experience, female DMs have had a way of liking that, depending of course on just how I go about 'getting some action.' I.E. Be romantic. -Matt Yeah, good point. Hopefully my party members won't be all "NO! *threaten!*" like usual. Hmm.. |
| Mattastrophic04-03-07, 02:25 PM | Yeah, good point. Hopefully my party members won't be all "NO! *threaten!*" like usual. Hmm.. Ah, forget them. Not like their 5-Cha selves can do any better, right? -Matt |
| Rhuxley04-03-07, 03:15 PM | You want respect. Make them respect you. Fascinate them, then tell them "I treat you respectfully, treat me with respect also" and tada! they must, for the next hour/level. Or make them do humiliating things everytime they rib you. You speak a bit of poetry, about how women love dogs, then suggest "you should crawl around acting like a do from now on, women would totaly pay attention to you" Or say things like "wait here" while the party wanders off. If you want respect, you have to take it. |
| Mattastrophic04-03-07, 06:25 PM | That's Suggestion, though. He doesn't get that until Bard6. Also, it probably won't take them a long time to figure out how Protection from Chaos/Good/Evil/Law works. -Matt |
| Mattarias04-03-07, 10:35 PM | You both DO have good points, though. I've gotta making them start working toward RPing their characters' charisma, not their own... |
| Rhuxley04-04-07, 11:37 AM | You both DO have good points, though. I've gotta making them start working toward RPing their characters' charisma, not their own... Its true, and I hate that stuff. I have a player now who gets all whiney cuz IRL he is rather charismatic, but his last character had no ranks in diplomacy or perform(oratory), and a charisma 10. He would say things that made perfect sence, then when I asked him to roll a diplomacy or oratory check, he would whine about rolling a 3, and would say stuff like: "Im a role-player, not a roll-player" & "What do you mean roll? NO! I said what I just said, and it sounded pretty good" Its unfair to the players who have a +20 diplomacy, and perform(oratory). How can they expect to give the same quality of speach, or to be as persuasive as you? They cant, and any DM that lets a cleric with 5 charisma persuade people is not only breaking rules, and being unfair to you, he is ruining 1/6th of the stats, and a good percentage of skills. I always say it like this "sure, YOU said that, but before anyone hears it, it come out of your stuttering, socialy inept characters mouth. So if you go back, and put like 15 'umm, well...'s and 'uhhhh...'s in there, you got what you said." & "The roll not only represents what you say, but how it is percieved. A roll of 20 for a charisma 5 character is an accident, something he said that was accidently funny, and he played on it a bit. A roll of 1 means you said something rude, or make a joke about elves, not knowing the counts wife is a half-elf" Seriously, think of it this way. You live in real life, and charisma is super important here. USe charisma in game the same way you do in real life. Roll a perform(comedy) check to say something dimeaning the next time you get dimeaned by them. Make sure the other players laugh at it. |
| Mattarias04-04-07, 05:16 PM | Hm, yeah, good idea, but I guess I'm gonna need to find a way to do that without seeming rude and alienating people.. |
| johnny_reb_2104-04-07, 10:13 PM | first of all you can still shag hotties and get the rest needed for spells its called ring of sustanence and you only need 2 hours rest.....lol i think if you talked the DM into doing a vital social setting when they botch it up end in the stocks jail chased by guards what have you....you can pull out all that is charming and such and save them show them how ugly and stupid they are... i took a level of warlock just to get beguiling influence to help my cha based skills. then more bard and i tried to get as much skill boost as poss to diplomacy and then as high a cha as poss...i can norm dipl my way out...annoys powergamer to no end but still effective anyhow when they try to romance a princess in thier pugnant dirt stained tabards with thier greasy just woke up hair and get thrown outside and you get pulled in by the collar by the cute chicks they might realize they arent all that |
| johnny_reb_2104-04-07, 10:21 PM | say he is wearing pink in support of breast cancer awareness cause he really loves boobs...."there is a shortage of perfect breasts in this world" wesly from the princess bride...lol |
| CrimsonDeath04-05-07, 04:27 AM | first of all you can still shag hotties and get the rest needed for spells its called ring of sustanence and you only need 2 hours rest..... The Ring of Sustenance only takes care of your biological need for sleep. There's a bedroll or something that lets you prepare spells after resting for only two hours, but a particular character can only use such an item once every 48 hours (no matter how many of them he owns). Unfortunately, I don't remember what the item is called... I think it's mentioned in the first post of the "Bunko's Bargain Basement" thread in the CO boards. BTW, if you decide to try playing pranks on the druid via his companion? With your charisma score, a Cloak of Charisma, and a Circlet of Persuasion, just one rank will go a long way. (Not that you necessarily need to go that route; it's just an option.) Oh, and those items will all help shoot your Diplomacy checks through the roof, too. |

With your charisma score, a Cloak of Charisma, and a Circlet of Persuasion, just one rank will go a long way. (Not that you necessarily need to go that route; it's just an option.) Oh, and those items will all help shoot your Diplomacy checks through the roof, too. Hehe, i never considered making opposed handle animal checks to get a animal companion to follow me instead. |
| Mattarias04-05-07, 07:45 PM | say he is wearing pink in support of breast cancer awareness cause he really loves boobs...."there is a shortage of perfect breasts in this world" wesly from the princess bride...lol Okay, crude as that is, you get a :cookie:, man. That. Is. AWESOME. XD Heheh, oh, right, in response to other responses: I doubt I can get those items (our party's kinda below the WBL guidelines..), but those are still all awesome ideas. :D We ARE going to be dealing with nobles soon... |
| Rhuxley04-05-07, 10:16 PM | We ARE going to be dealing with nobles soon... Seriously? Cuz this is where you shine. Make sure you wear courtiers clothes or better, and what is your perform skill? Please say its oratory. |
| Mattarias04-05-07, 10:25 PM | Seriously? Cuz this is where you shine. Make sure you wear courtiers clothes or better, and what is your perform skill? Please say its oratory. Heck yeah it's oratory. :D (and some string, but that's besides the point.) I already have courtier's clothes, but a change of outfit never hurt. I believe you need jewelry to go with the outfit to negate a penalty, non? |
| Rhuxley04-06-07, 10:39 AM | Yessir, its like 30gp worth, but dont sweat it, you could pick that up easy. Note that oratory is useful for giving speaches, about anything. Wanna take someones side in the debate of a law? Fascinate the opposition with yuor speach, and make sure that you ask many times if anyone thinks you are wrong. They wont be able to do anything, but be captivated my your talents, and you pretty much automaticly win. It helps a great deal if you can also suggest that they agree with you. Note that bragging, lengthy introductions, and turning phrases all fall under oratory also. If you do any of these things, you can use your bardic music, and depending on whether you have the feat or not, you can cast spellsl ike this too. Now please tell me you have slieght of hand, and its maxed. Cuz if you do, you can cast spells without anyone being aware that you are doing it. This is best used when almost nobody can see you(get your friends to surround you, and provide you cover if your somewhere crounded like court or a party) then cast a spell. Charm person is particularly useful for this. As far as RP goes, make sure you act as if your character is hearing Mr. 5charisma talk. When the player says "I talk to him" skoff, and say, "yeah... *dramatic pause* oh, you were serious?" Then press the point that they roll to see how well their 5 charisma might interpret what they say. And above all, shine here, if you d owell, and make it enjoyable for everyone, the DM will throw more talking encounters at you, if you mess it up, this will likely be one of the last ones you see. Good luck & enjoy. |

Either way, that's a good point about perform: oratory. Hmm.. |

There is an alternate use of the sleight of hand skill in there. |
| Mattarias04-06-07, 12:48 PM | No, thats the stupidest skill trick ever. I took it till i realized its in Races of Stone. There is an alternate use of the sleight of hand skill in there. Ah, I see. Well, unfortunately, we're not going to be using any of the race books anytime soon, so... Okay then. Hm, though I think I should take some tricks anyways.. |
| Rhuxley04-06-07, 01:04 PM | WHIP CLIMBER! its sweet and if she doesnt allow the races books, then take conceal spellcasting too |
| Mattarias04-06-07, 01:36 PM | WHIP CLIMBER! its sweet and if she doesnt allow the races books, then take conceal spellcasting too Yeah, I've been thinking of that. Though I've been trying to budget my skill points as well. ^^; |
| Luis_Dragunov04-06-07, 07:10 PM | You pretty much walked into that one. You're the runaway prince of a desert nation and you're a lvl3 bard who dresses in pink. What exactly where you expecting? In a movie, you'd be the comic relief character. You have two choices: 1) Toughen up. Your character could continue its merry self but, slowly, cautiously, it would garner power. Remember: despite everything, you have Arcane Spells and Caster Levels, and also there are some pretty sweet bard PRCs. Also, don't forget, you have skills. You can poison the bad guys one night while your party rests and waits to attack at dawn (remember: the other players may not respect your character and play with its CHA score, but NPCs cannot escape it). Get extra rewards from the next princess you lot rescue (a typical pretty princess has some 13 cha, is an aristocrat and probably has low wis. Shouldn't be too hard to seduce her). A standard bard isn't a big deal but... pay a visit to the Optimization Boards. 2) The second choice is more in term of character. Toughing up not in the prism of mechanical power but of IC character. I mean, so much mockery in the face of danger can only change him. How can he continue to be his fanciful self in face of such abuse? You have skills - more importantly, people skills. Much like a rogue, you can easily manipulate NPC reactions with Diplomacy, Bluff, Intimidate. You can turn an influential crime lord into your best friend, enchant an affluent female patron with your artistic talents. You may not have lots of HP or a sky-rocketing AC but you have great assets as far as NPC interaction go. Establish contacts and then act sure of yourself. You got ripped off in treasure? Have an impossibly strong bandit encounter take place and the treasure of your companions taken, as they are left to die of bloodloss. Save their lives and then collect your share from the bandit lord. With immature players like that, that's all you can do. |
| Rhuxley04-07-07, 10:54 AM | ^Agree, to just about everything |
| Mattarias04-07-07, 11:29 AM | Hmm.. Yeah, good point, but I'd rather not do stuff that'd get everyone hurt, like that bandit thing, but good idea nonetheless. Like I said, I was thinking of toning down the pink a bit. Any ideas for cool level 2 spells to take when I level up? -Also, I was thinking going Warmage , then Heartfire Fanner, then Sublime Chord. good idea? Bad idea? sounds like it'd help with the 'toughening' thing... |
| Pavitra04-07-07, 09:25 PM | I'm sorry, but this isn't a character development problem. It's a real-life-social problem, and it needs to be addressed OOC. Is the DM the only female at the gaming table? If so, you'll probably need her help to really make this work. Most of the suggestions so far are plans for revenge, but do you really think that's going to make things any better? (In case you're unsure: no.) If they aren't treating you as an equal now, then revenge will - at best - make them respect you as a worthy opponent. No, no, no. You need the DM on your side, because (1) from your description, she's probably the only one who takes your character seriously, and (2) as the DM, she has the power to do something about it. You probably have an advantage by going out with her, because she's automatically more inclined to be "on your side." Talk to the group and (if that fails) directly to the DM, out of character, not in the middle of a playing session, and tell them straight up that there's a problem. I suppose you can try essentially the same thing IC, but you're likely to meet up with a lot more resistance. Good luck, and break a leg. |
| Mattarias04-13-07, 12:06 AM | ah, my apologies for not posting here, my motherboard got a little toasty... eheh, and excuse my grammar. posting from a wii is hard enough. anyways, yeah, i've been thinking of actually talking to everyone OOC and having us put aside pur differences IC. actually, i was planning on telling the story of my character's ancestors, then ask them if they would pledge allegiance to that king, or something, and see how it goes from there. a little sneaky, but i like it, myself. |
| KillFrenzy04-14-07, 12:44 AM | [QUOTE=fil kearney;11810179]anyone who skins kittties in game is not a mature playerQUOTE] take that back! there is nothign wrong with skinning kitties anyway if you want their respect its simple you pick the 2 toughest members of your party slash their throats in their sleep and not only will the rest of the party respect you! they will also fear you! now go kill in my name! |
| BlackWeasel04-14-07, 10:16 AM | If you want to get stronger you should probably go to the CharOp boards and ask them. |
| Mattarias04-15-07, 01:35 AM | Ah, i'd rather not resort to plyer-killing, thank you. o.o' -I have posted on the CO boards, but i came here to ask about in-game stuff, not mechanics. obviously. |
