I'm going to be playing a Human Bard in a soon to start campaign and am having some difficulty coming up with a back story.

The setting is Greyhawk and we are starting at 1st level. I have a fairly clear idea for the characters personality.

I can't really think of how to explain him but I can tell you this:
I explained myself into some free Mithral Breastplate; however after careful thought about my ideas of the character (and some carrying capacity issues) I gave that up for some +2 Bracers of Armor(Don't tell me, I know that they have a smaller bonus). I guess you could say he prefers freedom of movement (Like a monk except no real reason behind it).

Also I would like to leave lots of plot hooks without any traumatic experiences. I would also like to find the closes possible Greyhawk equivalent to Fearun's Lliira for a deity.

Ok so here is what I came up with:

He was originally from a small town that received a lot of traffic. Wandering bards often came through town and he was always interested by their tales. Eventual one of those bards took him as an apprentice at the age of eight or so.

So for nine years or so they traveled around doing whatever it is bard masters and apprentices do. Eventually she (I’ve decided that now) said it was time for him to head out on his own. There was something she had to do and she disappeared never to be heard from again.

So that puts him at about 17 and the story of the bracers comes into play. He was wander through some woods somewhere and heard the sound of a nearby battle. Upon investigating he discovered a small elven scouting party having the asses handed to them by an orc raiding troop (they were out numbered otherwise they would have won, it was a close fight). So he starts sing his song or saying his poems (I’m not sure what he’ll do yet) and joins the fray, swinging the tide slightly towards the elves’ favor. He saves the day but receives a nasty hit, which was luckily healed by and elven cleric who was in the party.

He goes around with this party for a while doing some stuff and then there arises this issue where wizards are disappearing on the shadow plane in the vicinity of where ever they happen to be and it is decided that he should go since he was so inexperienced; however they leave him the bracers as a ward for the next time he brashly runs into a fight too big for him.

I don't know Greyhawk at all really or I would have done more places and names. It would have been nice to recieve some feedback (anything really, Ive seen thougher questions answered here, or at least tips given for fixing something that is wrong).

I need some more background info and reasons.

What about his parents, is he an orphan, do his parents still live? Why did he leave them, especially at such an young age? does he have siblings?

What alignment does he have? Did he ever ask himself, if good/evil was tempting?

After having answered that, it is easier to write a background.

Parents are missing, and have been. No one knows where they went.

No siblings.

Chaotic or neutral good.

I have stuff Im really just bad at putting things together and wording it.

One thing I'd really like is to find a deity too. I'd like it to be as close as possible to fearuns Lliira, maybe less dreamy. Having a deity would help me form some reasoning. It's hard to expain.

Is there a good site for looking up deity descriptions, as the ones I have run across just give domains, which isn't helpful.

Who took care of him untill he left? Why did they care (siblings of one parent, orphan house, caring good soul...)?

Take a look at Wikipedia, no joke, there are almost all gods listed, many with their backstorys and attitudes. Really, I was surprised myself.

Simply look for List of deities of Dungeons & Dragons.

He lived with an aunt who took him in (kind of resentfuly).

Deities are looking very bleak in Greyhawk.
I have searched several lists and it apearse that Greyhawk has no deity of Joy and happiness, except this one Frost Giant god.

Ooo, Olidammara looks interest as God of Revels, Humor and Wine and Spirits, among some other less intersting things

If you have access to the exalteed deeds handbook, you can find another minor god, Chaav, deity of joy, laughter and benevolent jokes, I think.

ok you probably can't use this but i have a cool bard idea.
ok so basically this kinda has a mexican-ish theme. his dad was a great classical spanish guitar player but left him as a child. his father named him sue and he is seeking revenge on his father fo doing so. all that.
