I'm currently running an Epic game set in a yet unnamed world, where the players are supposed to rebuild kingdoms and empires after the devastation caused by the sorcerer-kings (this term refers both to wizards and sorcerers) and to stop the Champion of Destruction, the Burning King. I've decided to add a tragic (make no mistake - he's still evil, but tries to redeem himself) NPC to the fray, fighting at the side of Evil but clearly hungering for Good: a death knight, who was once a great leader of men and a revered hero, but who fell and was transformed into a death knight. Now I need a good background story for him. I don't know why he fell, but the reason for that must have been dire, since he was truly a hero. He remembers his days as a valiant warrior in the service of Light and longs for those days and is sad, distant, and fatalistic because of that need and because he doesn't actually see any possibility for now to return back to the side of good. He's a warrior, as I've already said, and keeps his distance even from other powerful beings of evil. He's quite bright fellow and unusuallt charismatic. But possible background hints (and even hints how to build his personality even more and maybe some possible scenarios involving him) will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
