Help...I'm looking for some help justifying my cheesiness in wanting to select the mineral warrrior template for my tank-to-be.

our group is starting the red hand of doom adventure. my dm's asking that we have a pretty fleshed out background for our characters. i'm trying to make the mineral warrior fit the story...or at least have a credible story to explain how my character would have undergone the transformation.

we're starting at 5th level...i'll be a fighter 2/barb 2 with the +1 LA, chaotic good.

any ideas appreciated. thanks!

The description of mineral warrior says that you must use the mage spell to aquire the template but the old "the mage did it" wore thin more than a few years ago, as such I propose a different method transformation.
Ideally I would like to know your race but it is not that important, also hwich was your first lvl fighter or barbarian? I would suspect that it was fighter so as not wear the illiterate penalty. Correct me if I am wrong. I am not familiar with red hand of doom but I don't think that will matter either. One last thing, where is it set, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, homebrew or Eberon?

Now for the important story bit:

Life in the small village at the foot of the mountain was hard, but Rocky (your character) loved it none the less. The local crops weren't really plentiful but then it was the mines that brought in the coin. Of the men in the village you were either a miner or a millitiaman. Rocky was a millitiaman and took his job seriously, the occasional raid by orcs was never really a problem but it was the occasional giant or monster that needed driving off that was a real danger. Yet Rocky had survived, even done well, and was in line to become captain of the gaurd. He had also won the heart of the most beautiful girl in the village. In short life was good, but that all changed.

The miners had been chasing a particularly rare vein of ore and were excited about the riches they could claim from the earth. That was until they broke through into a fantastic cavern studded with gems and crystal that glittered in the torch light. Of the 5 miners that entered only 2 escaped the creature that lay there and they each bore ragged wounds. The militia was called and with weapons in shaky hands they enetered the mines. Rocky led the way with his grandfather's greatsword, it was rumoured to have enchantments laid deep in the steel but Rocky had seen no evidence of that other than it never needed sharpening.(you can change this bit to your weapon)

Entering the cavern all was still and the men began to fan out looking for the bodies of the fallen miners. Suuddenly out of the solid stone burst a horrific creature that seemed to be made of the stone itself. Lashing out with diamond sharp claws it laid waste to the unprepared men. Seconds later Rocky entered the melee his blade swinging, biting deep where the spears of the others bounced off. Wrenching his blade free Rocky was sprayed with the creatures blood which burned like acid, eating through armour and skin alike. Fighting through the horrendous pain he swung again scoring another blow. In pain the creature fled, the stone beneath it becoming soft mud into which it disappeared dragging the mortally wounded Rocky with it. This would have been the end for Rocky but for two things. Firstly the stone into which rocky sank was infused with earth magic which began to bind to his body as it solidified, secondly a small fey creature that had lived in the cavern for nearly a millenia took pity on Rocky and pulled him free of the stone once the wounded creature had left and healed him the best way it could.

Rocky lived but was forever changed, his skin was more like stone than skin and the combination of magic and earth in his blood left him feeling strangely not himself. Looking at himself Rocky knew he could not go back to the village, they would never accept him there and so feeling indebted to the fey spirit for saving him he stayed with it as he became accustomed to his altered body. The fey was wild at heart but appreciated the company and was over joyed that the creature which had attacked the men had been driven off. The fey told of how the creature was destroying the cavern which was created by the fey. It was some time before the fey let slip that it had drawn the men to it's cavern in order to drive off or kill the creature. Rocky was filled with rage that the Fey had so blatantly toyed with the lives of his friends and fellow militia for it's own goals. This was too much, something snapped inside him and he lashed out at the Fey, wounding it before he fled, running blindly until he saw sunlight. Collapsing panting on the icy ground Rocky regained his senses and took stock of where he was. Some how he had ended on the far side of the mountain range from his home town, a perfect place to begin a new life he thought as he slowly began to walk down the mountain.

I hope this helps you. Feel free to chop and change it as you like.

As a side note the creature that he fought was based loosely on the Delver which can be found in the SRD.
