He's a gestalt rogue 20//fighter 10/invisible blade 5/master thrower 5. He's going to be a quiet rogue, but thats because he was hurt earlier in life and now hes depressed and morbid. So i was either going to deck him in all black with a hood to cover his face, or give him one of those masks like Haku from naruto wears. He's a master of daggers (obviously) so he has two main daggers named Natsumi and Natsuki, a vest of endless throwing knives, and about 15 "spare" daggers hidden on him in various hidden sheaths. He'll also carry like 3 HHH's (I made one into an actual backpack, and the other two will be more like those book bag things you sling over your sholder and carry at your side) hidden by the dark cloak containing a bunch of cheap stuff and esoteric junk that would be very useful in certain situations, but nobody else thought to bring. He also rides a giant raven, my favorite part :P

So I need a name, not a real name, but one a depressed loner genius would use. Like Strider for Aragorn kinda thing. Opinions? Does he seem to cliche?

"Hi there, I'm Emo-Dio. Die-o."

Marysueness hurts my soul.

Were his parents killed in a generic accident that encouraged him to become more emo-killey?

Was he an orphan?

Carrying around a vest of endless knives, 15 extra knives, and then an additional 2 NAMED knives?

Please.

If you want a "The darkness of my soul makes me kill you..." Then you don't need a nickname, call yourself Emoknifeboy.

Strider/Aragorn had an Emo past, but he was a dark good mary sue. Your mary sue is a blatant I WANT TO AVENGE UPON GENERIC PAST MISHAPPENINGS AND I AM QUIET AND WEAR A DRAMATIC MASK. It's like... Like...

Ugh.

Soliloquy-man and his not-so-faithful companion Inner-Turmoil-boy.

Seriously was that a critique or an insult? There are a few weak points in what we've seen but let the man play his character the way he wants. Here. Lemme show ya how to help a person out while taking into account that you're expressing oppinion. Oh and Strider wasn't emo he was a pansy who couldn't handle his fate and ran away rather then running his kingdom.

He's a gestalt rogue 20//fighter 10/invisible blade 5/master thrower 5

Are you starting at double 20th lvl? Everything you fight is going to have to be epic ya know.

He's a master of daggers (obviously) so he has two main daggers named Natsumi and Natsuki, a vest of endless throwing knives, and about 15 "spare" daggers hidden on him in various hidden sheaths.

15 spare daggers does indeed feel excessive. His 2 primaries are undoubtedly intelligent, magical, artifact, or legacy items. The vest is fine for making sure you don't run out while fighting but you really only need 3 or 4 hidden away for when you don't have access to your normal equipment.

So i was either going to deck him in all black with a hood to cover his face, or give him one of those masks like Haku from naruto wears.

Haku wore his mask for the same reason most characters do in fantasy settings. To indicate a station he held. Decking yourself all in black sets off cheese alerts from a lot of people IRL and makes NPCs wonder about you in game. Try dressing like a normal person and simply keeping your speech very straight and to the point. If you don't want to be loud and expressive remember the old adage "People who ignore a shout will strain to hear a whisper". If you're point is ignored don't argue it instead look for another one to make.

I do have to give EonOmega one major point. He was hurt earlier in life is waaay to generic. You should most definitely have more if you wanna go this route.

Last if you want a name a character like this is gonna give for himself you're gonna have to go one of two ways. Name him dagger (preferably at least in another language) or John Smith an obvious psuedonym but it clearly shows he has no intention of giving a real name.

Thank you for having more... self control than I do. I would have gotten myself banned...

I've been thinking. I'm going to play him like two people. The real him will be basically bipolar, being generally down most of the time, but then he gets real happy sometimes, like when one of his elaborate strategies making the opponents look foolish work out, but falls straight back down at the tiniest mistake. and he gets super tense when he is even a little stressed or when his skills wont let him solve a problem immediately. In the past he has cast himself out a lot, didnt take chances, and when he did he got upset when everything didnt go 100% perfect. And he is aware of this too, which is the worst part, because he cant change himself. So he has to drink himself to sleep most of the time. When he needs to become the cold assassin, he puts on a mask, a psychological tool he uses to basically tell himself "I'm someone else now" and lets him become the remorseless, calculating guy he needs to be sometimes.

Sure thing. Gotta say that you have already added a good bit to the character with the last post. The mask now has an actual function other than a magic tool. He has a bit more personality as well and a definite direction for how to play. Try to think on what his past was like. Remember that you are extraordinarily powerful at this level so you need to know how someone who doesn't trust themself could achieve that kind of power. Given the lack of self-confidence I'd focus on the weakest enemies and let the rest of the group gang up on the more powerful. Have the team mage/blaster focus on more spells that target an individual with a powerful effect than area spells. Also try and get him to learn some barrier spells to keep you, himself, and any other ranged team members at a distance.

Another idea is this, in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Dr. Jekell was fully aware of Mr. Hyde, and understood that in a great many situations, including combat, Hyde was much more useful than himself. So you could perhaps play your character as that, an emotionally distraught, clever guy with emotional problems who hates to have to "get the other guy". He refers to himself with the mask by a different name, and views it as a separate entity. So, he sees himself as a clever, live-by-my-wits tinker, but then he puts on the mask and becomes a master of knives, and remorseless killing machine. IN fact, develop another persona for him as the mask, maybe he has a different style of speaking, and has thoughts that are different and maybe even contrary to his beliefs without the mask.

you are beginning play at level 40 though? I have to admit, that to me the character sounds very very ... well it's not something I'd like to play (Gaara from Naruto comes to mind when thinking of this character) but if it insterests you go for it.

A few things though.
First of all if you are in fact starting at level 40 then you need to consider what actual purpose this rogue will have within the party. You will be facing beyond epic threats, and it doesn't really matter how many or how powerful his daggers are, if your dm throws a monster with CR 40 at you he's going to be useless in straight combat, and useless for his trickery, especially considering his BAB will be something like (25)?
Second, if you are starting lower than level 40, then keep in mind that unless you play it carefully all those different classes will incur a massive multi-class XP penalty. I have personally never had a character in 3rd edition or 3.5 that went higher than level 34, nor have I dm'd for any. And the one PC that reached level 34 took nearly three years, with two 6-8 hour play sessions every month.
I mean wow though, go with your concept, but I would personally try to downplay what seem like very anime-oriented character traits.

I'm sure Riku would correct you but I'm online now anyway sooo... Gestalt means he's lvl 20 and powerful not 40. He'll most likely be facing CR 23-25 not 40. His BaB will be 20. Easy enough mistake to make but he'll be facing foes he can damage. A quad of 20s is not too bad as long as they're not all armor focused and he'll still be able to make a good impact.

Other than that all I can say is that yeah the character is somewhat overplayed right now but its not anime thats doing it. It comes more from a growing trend in modern literature of all sorts to focus on the person more than the situation. If he develops a strong background and plays the character well then he should do fine.

Oh and thanks for keeping it a matter of personal taste.:D

Oh that part's easy. The ultimate game of cat and mouse with an ex love turned rival. Probably a strong Beguiler (sp?). He has to constantly look over his shoulder, either to look for her face or to look out for her knife in his back. He's not really the type to go through ancient ruins for the sake of finding magical stuff. So if he hears rumors about her, he just heads towards where she is rumored to be, which usually ends up being in the aformentioned ruins trying to get to the super magic item before he does. She dogs him mainly because she's bored.

Hi RikuKupo,

Just going back to your orginal post, you wanted a name for your character. The most depressing name I have encountered was from "Death of a Salesman".

Will Lowman

Other suggestions for Surnames are;

Downs
Mudridge
Black
Rabone

Hope this is helpful.

Orphan or Nameless would also be rather depressing names.

OK. Mind if I make a suggestion. Go with a little sister over the ex-lover. Ex makes him a stalker and killer... bad combo. A little sister means he feels responsibility and needs to stay stronger so he can keep her out of trouble.
