| Istarion05-04-05, 10:59 PM | Next week I'm joining into a already started campaign, and the DM is going to use my arrival as a way to introduce psionics into the game. As the party needed a utility/secondary nuker, my choice was to play a psion (seer). The DM asked me to try to keep the nature of my powers hidden. So, Aeltaris, a human seer, will pose as if he is a diviner to the rest of the party. with these guidelines, I want to create a nice background. Aeltaris was the only son of the Jalatars. His father, Kyrios Jalatar, was a wizard who kept a small library at [undefined town near metropolis... DM has not handed a map yet XD], so the young Aeltaris had always plenty of books to read during his childhood, even if those books were things like: "Treaty of Blink dog physiology" or "History of the Dwarven nations". His mother, Alruanne, helped Kyrios with the mantainance of the library, but before marrying, she was a wandering sage. When Aeltaris became 8 years old, his parents started to teach him the basics of magic, although Aeltaris was not quite adept at casting anything, despite he was quite a clever child. Even if he did not managed to grasp the practical side of magic, he was quite fond of magical theory. His family's library was quite big, and not even his father knew every tome kept in it. The day of Aeltaris's 12th birthday, his father announced that it was time that the young lad should have some responsibilities: he asked Aeltaris to re-index one of the library's chambers, which had not been visited by anyone since the times of Kyrios great-grandfather, who had one of the best wizards in the family. The days passed, and by the time Aeltaris became 15, the chamber was not completely indexed yet. one of those days, while he was removing the dust of a long-forgotten encyclopedia of vermin, he tripped over a wooden box. Examining it more closely, he found the lock, and he opened it easily, as it had beed oxidized for ages. Inside, he found something completely different to everything else he had seen in the library before: almost a dozen of colored crystal, each one glowing in different hues. As Aeltaris looked at them, he started to hear voices inside his head. After a while, one of them dominated the others, and then spoke clearly to Aeltaris. It was some kind of recording: by the impressions on Aeltaris mind's, the voice in the crystal identified Aeltaris as member of the Jalatar clan. "And... what are YOU?" thought Aeltaris. The voice replied that he was an "instructor" created by Listerith, the founder of the Jalatar clan. As a instructor, his mission was to teach the family's secrets in case they were forgotten. "What kind of secrets?" Secrets of Power "Are you talking about magic? If you are, you are losing your time with me, I'm not made for it" Magic? That's not our family's legacy, kid. If for something we were reknowned in my creator's time, was for our knowledge of the mind. "I'm not Understanding" This is going to be a lot more difficult than what i first thought. Your mind, kid, that flowing of thoughts inside that head of yours, is a great force, capable of doing things that not even magic can achieve... I'm not saying that our power is better than magic, It's different. "Okay... and I'm supposed to learn how to use this power?" NO... "then what?" The power of your mind is not something that can be learned, like one of those books you keep here. It' something that lies deep within you, and the only thing I can do for you is to help you in your quest to finding it. "How?" "First of all.. relax" ... After that incident, Aeltaris went down to the chamber everyday, and spent several hours "talking" with the crystal. As days passed, he learned how to meditate properly, and how to concentrate his thoughts on an orderly manner, "to focus" as the instructor gem said. He kept this in secret, and every time his mother asked where he had been, he just said he was studying some tomes he found. After two years of constant training, which not only included mind training, but endurance and swiftness exercises, the instructor spoke again to Aeltaris. Kid, remember this day: in a few minutes, your path will be chosen. Pick up the other gems from the box... Aeltaris followed the instructions, and after he grasped the nine crystals with his right hand, he was urged to toss them into the air. He did, and with the left hand, he attracted one of the crystals. He did not know what he was doing, it was like if the stones were in control of his body. Well, done kid... the amatist has chosen you. "...and that means?" Each of these gems represented one of the paths your mind could follow: ruby for the edge of the soulknife, silverquartz as the steel of the psychic warrior, topaz for the emotions of the wilder... "and the rest?" The rest are the six ways of the psion "Psion?" the wizard of the mind, kid, that's the psion. as there are schools of magic, there are aspects of psionic energy: Pyrite for the burning flame of the kineticist's movement Sapphire for the flowing waters of the savant's travel Emerald for the growth of the egoist's body Jet for the suggesting power of the telepath communication Diamond for the shifting creations of the shapers creativity And Amatist, symbol of the curtain of time and space that the seers gaze through. "...so I'm a seer... and that means?" that means that you'll see things others can't normally see, you'll know things few others will know... and you can predict the actions of fate... "that sounds to divination for me" Kind of... and I recommend you to make others, specially your fathers to believe you are one of them. By gazing in the minds of people of this town, it seems that psions are hidding themselves in your time, because none of them had heard of them... not even one. "that's what I'll do, sir" ------------------- Shortly after, Aeltaris started to manifest his first powers, and not much time passed till the rest noticed it. Following the instructor's counsel, he made everyone think he was a diviner, except his parents: they knew too well magic to recognise that what their son did was not magic, and everything was clarified when Kyrios went to the chamber and found the crystals: the instructor could not keep "silent" and he revealed the story to Kyrios. After recognizing the nature of his powers, Aeltaris decided to travel to [metropolis] in order to recollect information about the hidden psions. there he knew Indaer, a soulknife who worked for the church of [Insert god of the sun here], acting as a paladin (only the high priest and [sun god] knew the truth, and both accepted the bluff). After investigating all the details about the soulknives he could get from Indaer (what took a looooong time) He continued travelling until he met the party (details provided by GM in the following days) Sry for my english, but I'm not a native speaker...
