| Edymnion06-22-04, 08:23 PM | I just started up a Rogue 1/Soulknife 3 (from the Expanded Psionics Handbook), and I just finished writing his character background. Dunno if anyone would be interested, but here it is.Galen began his career in the world as an... "acquisitions expert". Unfortunely, he was not as successful at his would-be pilferous lifestyle as he would have liked. Perhaps it was his own bad luck, or perhaps he mearly lacked the skill, but he never could seem to get a weapon of any size or consequence past a town guard to save his life. He had almost given up trying to make his way as a padfoot, and decided to try and make one last big score, to have enough money to settle down into a more mundane life. That last score became a turning point in his life, although he didn't know it yet. His last hit was to be against a fairly wealthy man who always seemed to think one step ahead of his business rivals. It was to be a quick in and out job, the kind he was best at. He easily crept in through a top floor window, and had slinked down to the ground floor, his last hit was going smoothly. That is until the owner of the home opened the door on the lantern on the other side of the room. Pulling a dagger, Galen threw it at the man, who was already casually sidestepping the blade even before it had fully left his hand. After several dozen seconds of the man simply avoiding every assault Galen could level against him as if he were going through the steps of an intricate play, Galen gave up. He wasn't going to win this, and he wasn't going to get away, that much was clear. But for some reason, the man did not seem upset, he even offered Galen a seat! Several hours passed by, and the sun was rising. The man, who's name turned out to be Darien, revealed how he managed to not only keep a step ahead of his business opponents, but also how he managed to stay one step ahead of Galen. The man, Darien, was a Telepath, he could read the minds of others, to see their thoughts before they even knew they were thinking them. And the reason he had waited for Galen instead of simply having the town guard there to take him away, was because he sensed the spark in the theif's mind. The ability to harness his own mental ability in a way others didn't even know could be done. Although Galen never proved himself able to master mind reading, or mentally moving objects, or any of the other talents Darien knew of, he did hold a surprise the man never expected. Upset at his own lack of progress, Galen struck out in frustration, feeling that he would never be able to master the skills the man tried to teach him. Somehow, in that moment of resignation, something in Galen's mind snapped, a barrier fell, a power was unleashed. When Galen drew his hand back from the plastered wall, he was astonished to find a slightly singed cut, as if a hot blade had pierced through the papered finish. A half instant later, he was even more astonished to find a wavering streak of purple... energy... sprouting from the back of his hand. Nearly the length of his forearm, it looked like some sort of large spike, flattened out, like some sort of blade. As he gaped, the blade flickered, and extinguised, like a flame being doused in water. He concentrated, he strained, but Galen could not make it re-appear. After several minutes, he again gave up in frustration, and the energy again sprouted out from his hand. It looked... differant this time though. Where it had been purple a moment before, it now appeared to be a more violet color, a little more blue in it than before. And the shape was slightly differant. Galen couldn't control this mind blade, but he and Darien refocused his training on this new turn of events. Soon, Galen could call this mind blade, or a "psiblade" as Darien called it, at will. Or, to be more precise, he learned to let the blade come. He could not force the psiblade into existance any more than he could force his hand to detatch from his body, but with practice he learned to relax and concentrate at the same time, in a manner that allowed him to call the blade. Soon, he had mastered using his new weapon, one the town guard could never take from him. To his dismay, however, Darien soon after told him that he could no longer help him in his journey. While Darien was powerful as a Telepath, he had no knowledge in this form of mind weaponry. Aside from the basics on how to calm the mind, and tap into it's power, there was nothing else the man could teach him. He did suggest that Galen could hone his abilities himself, with enough experience, and enough practical use of his newfound skill. With a bittersweet farewell, Darien and Galen parted company, and Galen struck out to test his newly found powers in the real world. He had several adventures between then and now, and had grown in his abilities. His blade had become stronger, and he had discovered a way to increase it's power even more, although this power tended to discharge whenever he struck a target, he is confident he can perfect it, eventually. |
