Heya Guys

Ok here is my predicament. I have just joined an established campaign. The group already has what I usually play ( straight foward fighter type or a rogue). The party consists of a cleric, Druid/Ranger, Paladin, Barbarian, Wizard, Warmage and a Rogue/Shadowdancer. So the party is pretty much set. So I decided to go with something completely different from what I have played in the past. A hexblade or a hexblade/warlock combo. I have 12 levels to work with and the campaign is set in the Bloodstone lands in the Forgotten Realms setting. The Dm wants a couple of pages background so he can work me into the campaign. I am kinda of a surprise to spring on his pc's So I have a few questions to bounce off of all you creative minds.

1. Would the two classes even be viable together?
2. What race would be good for this character? ( I was thinking tiefling or Fey'ri)
3. What type of fighting style do you think would work best with the party listed above for this character?

Thanks in advance for any help given

The two classes would probably work well together. Perhaps be more a pure warlock with 2-3 level of hexblade, for the curses and better fighting abilities. Or if you don't want to suffer from penalties of multiclassing, try the same level of each class.

Your party seems to have many melee characters, so you could perhaps remain behind with the wizard, using range attacks. If things turn dirty, you'll be able to protect him.

For the race, tiefling isn't the greatest one, since the hexblade need a high charisma. What about an aasimar? He uses to be a normal person, but people who knew he had celestial blood expecting him to be gentle and generous. Sick of this, he began professions usually kept for person with a lesser morality.

Hmm a twisted Aasimar eh? Sounds good but maybe a half celestial would work.
It would kinda be ironic seeing that the party's paladin is a half fiend. Well keep the ideas coming folks. Gotta be ready with background by next Saturday.

Thanks in advance

As per the RAW, Half-Celestial are Always Good. The nice thing with Aasimar is they are basically humans with some celestial ancestors. Everyone think they will act like celestials, but they are free-willed. That's why you can have a tiefling paladin or an aasimar blackguard if you wish.

I had an idea of an aasimar warlock that just may work for you...

A celestial figure and a demonic figure both loved for the same mortal or something... only the celestial won...2 generations or so later, you enter the world. The demonic figure decides it is for payback, and somehow bargains or infuses like with you and hence the warlock...ness.

It's a very broad idea, but an idea nonetheless.

Flavorwise, they work great, since both classes use "inate abilities" to combat. I don't know about power, but it'd be pretty decent, sounds like a great concept.

tiefling would be nice for flavor, and Fey'ri would be nice too. But.. fey'ri have a larger LA...

3. What type of fighting style do you think would work best with the party listed above for this character?
Don't worry about the party, they're covering themselves. But I think ranged would be best.

Great ideas so far guys. The dm convinced me not to the 1/2 celestial route. With the whole LA thing. I am pretty new to 3.5 the last campaign I played in was 2nd edetion. Although I have kept up with the game due to NWN and this site. The Dm houseruled so there is no Xp penalty for classes as long as you have no more than 2. So I think I will be going with just a few levels in Warlock and the rest in Hexblade . I also think I will be going with Helm Horror's concept sounds intriguing. Too bad I suck at writing these things up. As the dm insists on having at least 2 pages of background on every character we run. Also what kind of equipment do you think I should get. The dm is letting me have pretty much anything I want as long as it's not going over board. So no +10 holy, outsider bane, healing, flaming burst, sonic burst, greatsword of stabbitty goodness. :P Well thanks for all the help so far. Anything more you guys give me is just Icing on the cake .

His family was part of a cult, and they were summoning a demon. When they did the high priest panicked and forgot the words of power used to control the demon and it broke free of his control and killed all but one of the members, your mother as it turned out. He promised to let her live if she bore his child, a child that would be native to the material plane, marked by evil and chaos, but not only that; it would also serve as a reminder of what she had caused, the death of those she cared about and respected. You bear no physical resemblance to demons, in fact you are full-blood human; evil is in your soul not your body and the fight against your impulses is constant.

Definetely ranged combat, work on your dexterity and pick up Fell Flight and you'll be the perfect archer. I would suggest a primarily warlock with as little hexblade as possible, warlock is just better on so many levels IMHO, and that's just because I like the idea of a caster who doesn't tire.

Litte hexblade as possible is what you want.

Hexblade 2/Warlock 18.

But if it is TOO much warlock for you... the occult slayer PrC in complete warrior is a great idea, only you will have to ask your dm to rule zero your eldritch blast as your signature weapon... Alternative: take a greatsword route w/ hideous blow.

I'd go with the Fey'ri from the race's background blends perfectly with that of most warlocks, the benefits of the race GREATLY enchance the abilities of the Warlock class when done correctly, more so than any race I've seen mention in any warlock thread. (Magic in the Blood + LA+2 Fey'ri = very powerful) I once played with the idea of changing Fey'ri's favorite class to Warlock because of the nice blend of racial abilities and warlock abilities.
