Okay, so I've helped some people out making background stories, but I'm kind of stuck now myself, so if anyone could give me a few ideas to work with, I'd be grateful.

This is a character I had to kind of throw together for a game, so I didn't get a whole lot of time to devote to background. Now we've had some roleplay time with him, and I'd like to get a better grasp on his history.

Whisper Gnome, Rogue 3, Neutral Evil, looking to become an assassin.

His main emphasis is on sneakiness and disable device/open lock type skills.

What I have so far:

Torvish has switched alliegances many times, working for whoever offered the best price. He does operate by a basic code (don't betray your employer unless it can't be traced back to you), but it's very basic and his morals are quite relaxed. He's spent time as a spy and infiltrator, using his small stature to remain unnoticed in places he really shouldn't be. He prides himself on his ability to sneak around unseen and unnoticed, and though he keeps it to himself fairly well, he despises those that clank around in armor with no respect for the beauty of silence (this is going to be interesting as he's now at the service of two people that wear full-plate all the time).

I need some ideas on where he came from, and what lead him into this life of crime and his disregard for the sanctity of life.

Any ideas and any help appreciated, and thank you to all that even take a peek at this thread.

Grew up in a harsh urban environment where he couldnt find a place for himself. Ended up dropping out of school (whatever kind) and began growing apart from his parents. Got mixed up with the wrong crowd one day and has never looked back. Still hates his parents

Or you can put it as he tried hard, struggled, and the wrong crowd manipulated him. Cant escape the life now and regrets his profession and still loves his parents. This would be if hes more True Neutral however but im sure you can find a mindset to make this one work.

Thank you muchly for the assistance. I like your second suggestion, and I can easily make that work out. I've recently been accused of having too many sad or twisted background stories, so I think for my only current evil character I'll have a nice happy family background, and it just wasn't the life he wanted. Money began to hold a greater attraction, etc, etc, and he began to see his quiet family to be complacent and dull, content to have a boring life of one day to the next.
