| Brotter_Lutgehr01-09-07, 07:21 PM | So I'm going to play a Halfling Rogue. When the story starts off he's the mayor of a small town called Ravensoft. He's a bit greedy, but he's a good guy which is shown in his good hearted and loyal nature. But I've been having some trouble with his background. You see he's the type to get himself into trouble, but he's also not the type that would endanger Ravensoft and its people. So I can't see him being a world class theif and retiring to Ravensoft and knowingly endangering his people. So if any of you could make any sujestions that would be very helpfull thanks a lot in advance. |
| BlackZed01-09-07, 08:59 PM | I love building character backgrounds. I tend to get a bit complex with my own, though. If you can give me a bit of an idea of where you want to go with this character? Is the campaign going to be town-based, more diplomacy based adventures/politics, or is he going to go out adventuring in the wilds from time to time? Where does he want to go? What does he want to do? I'm assuming you mean a background to how he got to where he is now, as mayor? Is he content with his life, but getting thrown into trouble in Ravensoft, or will the trouble take him out of town? How well will he deal with consequences? Can he manage to separate adventuring life from life as a mayor? Does he lead a double life, rogue by night, mayor by day? Sorry to bombard you with questions. I'll probably think of more as well, but right now that'll give me a better idea of your character's personality, and ideas to work with for a background. |
| Brotter_Lutgehr01-10-07, 05:12 PM | If you can give me a bit of an idea of where you want to go with this character? Basicly he really doesn't want to leave Ravensoft but he also feels that the other party member will need his help to survive(Kinda clueless Sorceror). But in the end he remebers how much he loves adventuring and possibly use his Rogue abilities to help Ravensoft. Is the campaign going to be town-based, more diplomacy based adventures/politics, or is he going to go out adventuring in the wilds from time to time? A little of everything Where does he want to go? No where. He's content in living in Ravensoft being the mayor What does he want to do? He wants to live a peacefull life minding his own business I'm assuming you mean a background to how he got to where he is now, as mayor? Yep Is he content with his life, but getting thrown into trouble in Ravensoft, or will the trouble take him out of town? He's content but trouble takes him out of town. How well will he deal with consequences? He's willing to give his life for the greater good. Can he manage to separate adventuring life from life as a mayor? He had been doing that for around 10 years when he moved to Ravensoft. Does he lead a double life, rogue by night, mayor by day? No, Mayor by day, Mayor by night. |
| Archmage_of_Blood01-10-07, 09:00 PM | You wont be dissapointed. This guy rocks. |
| BlackZed01-10-07, 09:04 PM | Girl. Yeah, I'm more at home with the troubled backgrounds, so I'm trying to come up with something a bit out of my normal area of expertise for ya. Might take me a bit, but I'll probably get at least a few ideas for you tonight. It's just kind of giving me flashbacks of Regis.. :D |
| Archmage_of_Blood01-10-07, 09:06 PM | Sorry Master. Can't tell, obviously. No offense. |
| Brotter_Lutgehr01-10-07, 10:03 PM | Thanks a lot for the help! I have always struggled when righting backgrounds for my characters. |
| Adrian_Crane01-10-07, 10:09 PM | Just when I thought that I was out they pull me back in Well, one of the bigger issues seems to be his reputation putting the town at risk. For a rogue type, a reasonable solution would be disguise, forgery, and other such tricks to throw his known enemies off track. Perhaps he's living under an alternate identity? Maybe he left a paper trail that had his enemies following him to another town, and now the ruse is up so it's time to go fix things for good and ensure the security of Ravensoft? Hmm, I like the second one. Gives him a reason to leave, since he knows that dealing with the problem will give him peace of mind, and that getting away from Ravensoft will actually be a good idea now that his old acquaintences are pursuing him. Do you have any specific longtime foes in mind, or is that up for grabs as far as creating them? |
| Brotter_Lutgehr01-10-07, 11:13 PM | It's pretty much up for grabs. He's CG so I kinda see him stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. |
| BlackZed01-11-07, 03:29 PM | You might think this is an easy life. Well, in part you'd be right, I guess. For the most part. Wasn't easy getting here, though. I grew up as the child of former adventurers. Halfling Outriders, they were always first in the fray when it came to fighting giants and goblinkind, defending our small community. At night, they'd gather us children around, telling us stories of their past: battling evil creatures, rescuing those that happened to get themselves in trouble. My siblings and sat in wide-eyed fascination, each of us seeing the fights as though we were there as our parents took turns throughout the story, their loyal old riding dogs Thunder and Lightning lounging at their feet. My sister followed in their footsteps, riding a pup of old Thunder and Lightning. I could see the glow of passion and glory in her eyes every time she rode out, but it was gone when they carried her back from the last raid, cold and stiffening in the early morning. That was what inspired me, her lifeless body and the soft whine of her dog as he mourned her. Peace: that's what I wanted. A life of danger could wait for someone else. I left our village when I became fully an adult. The world of the other races held much fascination for my still-growing mind, and soon I found myself a clerk in the employ of a nobleman. I learned my figures there, learned a little creative accounting that put his money into the hands of those that truly needed it. Nearly lost my hand there as well, but I was far too quick to be punished for doing a good deed. The poor were everywhere, I'd found that out. Everywhere I turned, there were hands out in need. So I joined them. Only for a time, you see, and I only tell you this so you can understand why I took up my position here, as Mayor. I learned their wants and their desires, traveled to other cities and found the same there as well. Oh of course some places were better than others, but there were always the fortunate and those less so. When I felt I had a good idea about the poor, I decided to infiltrate the wealthy. A few purses became lighter, a few pockets developed holes, and wicked men lost a little bit of money as I scavenged a capital to set myself up as a gentleman. I'd been changing names as easily as hats, but now I began to, as it were, make a name for myself. Fortunately I'd made few enemies, and managed to get myself out of any trouble that had followed me, so it was very nearly an entirely fresh start. My reputation developed on its own, with very little intervention from myself. As my reputation grew, so did my responsibilities. I was a gentleman now, after all, and found myself being elevated through the society of responsibility. I discovered that I could use my increasing power to help those in need of help, and began more actively pursuing that power. I landed the job of mayor. |
| Archmage_of_Blood01-11-07, 03:38 PM | What'd I tell ya'? Pure genius. |
| BlackZed01-11-07, 03:48 PM | Thank you. :) Glad I didn't disappoint your faith in me. |
| Archmage_of_Blood01-11-07, 03:53 PM |   |
| Brotter_Lutgehr01-11-07, 04:34 PM | That was amazing thank you so much! |
| BlackZed01-11-07, 05:44 PM | Happy to be of service. My DM's been threatening to have a game where everyone plays what they would be if they were D&D characters. He says I'd be a gnome bard. :D |
| Adrian_Crane01-11-07, 06:01 PM | Hmmm...Bard I can see, but why gnome? Do you like to rig his DM screen with flash powder or something? ;) |
| BlackZed01-11-07, 06:25 PM | My DM is my husband. He knows me quite well, and I still stun him on a nearly daily basis either with actions or deeds. He's heard, many times, "Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time..." XD |
| Brotter_Lutgehr01-11-07, 07:52 PM | lol thanks again. |
| Corlan01-28-07, 05:44 PM | i have this halfling rogue character . base of story is he ends up caught and flees to a place called oaklore. (stats) strength 12 dex 16 cons 10 wis 10 int 13 cha 15 i gave him plenty of skill points on intimidate and bluff (lil guy with big mouth) my idea is he s some sort of poker/card player. bluffing and intimidating through games, after playing some taverns some local players distrust him, and accuse him of cheating. either when he s asked to empty his pockets they notice he has nicked a few wallets or they find some hidden cards (applied skill in sleight of hand ) so he has to flee but gets caught. after a while he managed to free himself by being shorter then the average cell occupant. he finds himself in a town called oaklore (our dm told us thats where the story begins and that i need to have been caught for something and escape) atleast thats what i ve got in my head. could use some more help on making a thurough background, on where he grew up or how he learned to play cards etc etc. |
| Adrian_Crane01-28-07, 09:25 PM | I'd recommend making your own thread. Hijacking is bad form (though this thread does seem finished), but more importantly, you'll be able to put a more descriptive subject line. |
