The background is for a campaign set in Dambrath a few hundred years before the current setting. I think the timelines been fudged slightly.
Anyway, apart from those few times when I can just open up word and start writing, my creation f backgrounds tends to involve starting with dot points and then expanding on them individually, which tends to result in ending up with some bits remain as dot points for far to long and being haphazrdly glossed over, while others end up having far too much written about them.

Anyway here it is as it stands.

Born to lower middle class parents Jacob and Mary Gower some 20 summers ago in the trading city of Lunath. Lucian spent his early years living a somewhat unremarkable childhood.

Apprenticed to a blacksmith as the warring between Dambrath and the drow & Crinisti invaders, while most of his friends went off to get themselves killed on the battlefield, Lucian stayed behind to help make the equipment necessary for the war effort.

The invasive forces pushed onwards until they had eventually taken Lunath, after the military and political leaders had been killed and replaced, for many citizens, they went back to business as usual, only at lesser pay and with different people demanding your tribute and respect, but Lucian, regretting not being able to do his part directly on the battlefield like many others, decided he would not yield so easily to a bunch of pointy eared ******** from beneath the earth, and became part of an organised resistance movement, doing what he could to assist the armies of dambrath and inconvenience the invaders, this for the most part involved eavesdropping, organising safe passage out of, and occassionally into, the city and stealing or sabotaging resources, from rations to magical items. A few months ago, Lucian cell got wind of a group of artificers visiting the city, supposedly engineering a new war machine. A plan was hatched to assassinate the artificers and steal, or at least destroy the plans. The plan seemed almost flawless but, as they say, no plan survives first contact with reality. The first half went off without a hitch, one of the cell members, a psion, had provided the team the means to communicate with each other, Lucian had successfully made it into position and apparently so had the others. It is unknown whether there was betrayl involved or they had simply underestimated their targets, but all hell broke loose over the next few seconds as an arrow buried itself in his shoulder. By reflex he rolled out the the bowman's view, and nearly passed out. A few choice words and the posion was stopped in it's tracks, for now. He yelled through the telepathic bond the psion had created only to discover it was no longer there. At about this time the door the the roof he was standing on burst open. Heavily armed guards pouring out of the doorway, blocking his only apparent exit. He risked exposing himself to the archer as he up and bolted to the other end of the roof and thought a quick prayer as he dived off the roof and attempted to make the jump across the alleyway and to the next building, a good 10 or 15 feet below. He lead the guards on a merry chase across the rooftops and down onto the street until he eventually managed to lose them, at which point he removed his mask and outer layer of clothing and made his way back home.

Noticed he had been followed.

Could not stay.

fled to cathyr, nearest large city that he knew had not been taken over. Trying to survive there, manning the walls once it came under seige and waiting for any word from his cell.

Not sure if it is a backstory or an event in the previous life of your character... Where are you supposed to end? I mean, at first I thought you were to be captured by the guards and your campaign was to perform a few dirty tasks for those guards, or perhaps the guards recognized you, and you were forced to quit the city. Did your DM or other players asked you for a reason to be in a specific place, in order to start the campaign?

Yeah sorry about that. The campaign is meant to start in cathyr as it is under siege and about to fall.

Well, I'm not sure what you need help for.

You got the "entrance into the adventuring life" all worked out with that messed-up operation.

There is nothing wrong with an unremarkable childhood.

The only thing you need, IMO, is a personal nemesis or source of conflict, whether it be from a family member, a bitter classmate or whatnot. The essence of the conflict need not be lethal in itself (that is, the nemesis does not need to seek Lucian's death), although the DM is free to expand on it and turn it into a dangerous affair.

Other than that, check out my signature for possible assistance.
