Now for an actual story on how a character of this build would come around, I am asking for the expert story writers to have a shot at it. Be as creative as you want, I will read every story you guys post :) Thank you! |
| Morka07-22-05, 09:55 PM | If you treat Fighter and Swashbuckler as two different types of warriors, it's quite possible for a fighter to turn into a swashbuckler, if he's in the royal army, he will meet many representant of each class. What exactly is a ninja? I know it's some kind of oriental, stealthy monk/assassin. If he's in the royal navy, our fighter/swashbuckler can easily come in contact with a strange assassin clan, and join them for a short period. Now a master thrower. Our character wish to return home. EIther his ship is attacked by pirates and he join them, or he simply embark on a pirate ship. It shall be a great pirate, jumping on a boat and throwing knives at everyone! Back home, our friend find almost everything as it was before, save one thing: himself. From an idealist soldier for the king, he is know a cold-blooded assassin and thief. The best trip is not in seeing new lands, but in seeing the old ones with new eyes. Perhaps would have it been better for his old land if his eyes didn't change... for the worse! :smirk: |
| Ganzor07-23-05, 01:26 AM | Very nice story!! I like it :) Any other stories you guys can come up with?? Read his after you write yours, it was quite excellent and will be hard to match  EDIT: I should also add, we have only had one session so far and it was in frostburn. You can start ANYWHERE and end ANYWHERE, this is just to show him examples of how this build can happen. The race I am using is a human male - neutral evil. |
| Harrow Blade07-23-05, 04:51 AM | With nothing more to go on this is what I have got. A race, gender etc would be nice.;) I am assuming that the character is a human male for the purposes of this story with a name of...... Gaznor. His father was an soldier as was his father's father and his father's, father's father and so on and so forth for as far back as the family line could be traced. So it seemed that it was inevitable that the army would be his first call in life. Thus Gaznor was drilled relentlessly in the art of fighting by his father who had broken the family tradition and actually survived his term in the army. When he was finally convinced that his son was skilled enough to know which end of the sword was the one you took hold of and which one went into the other person / monster he sent him off the city to recruit with a personal recomendation. But Gaznor's father was not the only one to be breaking a family tradition. upon arriving in the port city of InsertName with a small purse of money, no desire to join the army and a life time of country living to make up for. It did not take long for the young man to lose his money and fall in with a crowd who did not hold him in very high esteem. It took all the training his father had given him to stay alive through the many fights that came his way. Some adaption to his style was in order however, gone was the armour and weapons his father had him training with instead mobility and skill were his greatest allies although he still bears the scars of the time it took to learn the new way of fighting. Finally sick of having to fight constantly to earn enough to keep his ribs from showing Gaznor took a job gaurding the estate of a very wealthy foreign merchant. The job was fair and kept Gaznor out of trouble for several months until an assasination attempt was made on the merchant. Through a last ditch effort Gaznor and 2 other surviving guards managed to foil the attempt and earned the gratitude of the merchant. Concerned for his safety the merchant brought in a fellow country man to train his guards in the skills that would aid in battling those who would seek to kill him. It was through this rigorous training that Gaznor earned a new set of skills. Again The compound was assulted by even more assasins but this time the merchants guards and Gaznor were ready. A fierce battle ensued and this time the assasins fought through to thier goal and killed the merchant, many guards lost thier lives and Gaznor almost lost his after his back was broken in a fall from a roof top. In the aftermath Gaznor was found by the city guard and revived but with little or no money to his name he could not afford to buy the healing that he needed. Force to live as cripple Gaznor took up residence in a common house run by a benevolent temple yet he slipped into a deep depression. Unable to move his legs he would sit out side the temple grounds and beg for coins but was unable to keep his meagre coin as heartless thugs with more brawn than brain took his coins leaving him nothing. Unwilling to give up with out a fight he began to collect stones to throw at his attackers and soon began accurate enough to drive off half a dozen of them before they were able get within arms reach. Soon other beggars and cripple came to beg near him as the thugs were reluctant come near due to the barrage of alarmingly accurate projectiles he was capable of throwing. Grateful to thier new protector Gaznor soon developed a reputation for his skill. It was not until the temple was robbed that he truly had a moment to shine. Dragging himself into the broken gateway armed only with his sack of rocks Gaznor felled the mage and four warriors before the temple gaurd arrived. Having saved the temples precious icons and coin Gaznor felt that they should repay his help by healing his back and giving him his life back but all he got for his trouble was a gold coin from the pompous head priest who was not so benevolent as many of his underlings. A black rage filled Gaznors heart and he swore on that single coin that it would be the death of the priest. That very night he dragged himself to the temple of a god of death and swore before the high priest that if he could restore fully his movement then Gaznor would repay him with the head of the pompas priest. the deal was struck and that same night Gaznor returned with the head and set his life down a path blood and darkness. For several years Gaznor worked as an assasin earning himself a fortune leaving a trail of death behind him |

| Twilight_Wanderer07-24-05, 02:03 PM | Creating a character's past is alot about who you want your character to be. How do you roleplay them? Do they act arrogant from certain events, afraid of certain things? However the question you asked is this: Is it possible that a character can have all of this background. You said you were arguing with a friend, the simple fact is, its your character, you can do with it what you want according to the Dm, but anyways. I'm not going to write you a background story, thats your job, however I will give you several things that could have happened to include all of those changes in career. Also, post more about your character, alot of this depends on a characters age. An 18 year old boy with all of that skill is quite difficult to believe, so keep age in mind as well. Trained as a youth in fighting, (Fighter level one) Journeyed to the city and joined the army, was trained (Fighter level two) Was transferred into the Navy and trained as a Swashbuckler (SB level one) OR and alternate way Joined up for money with a group of pirates, mercenaries, etc. (SB Level One) Now you can have adventures exploring as a SB to gain the next two levels of SB. (F-2, SB-3) Say the ship is wrecked on a foreign coast, and you are one of the few survivors. The local village takes you in and a master there takes a liking to you. You show talent in swordplay, and he offers to train you in the art of his clan, the Ninja. Here is something key to the next two classes. What is a Ninja? An assassin (there is the reason for your assassin class) What weapons do ninja's learn to use? (Throwing weapons, thus master Thrower) From there you could have all of your cross classes learned in that foreign country, and those skills honed throughout adventures without much more of a reason other that you decided to focus on your throwing skills, taking the MT class. Ninjas are trained as Assassins, therefore you sell your skills out to high payers, and focus on your stealthy ways, improving your assassin skills. Its quite possible for any character to have any class combinations using a storyline, if you simply think it out. This is a roleplaying game, imagination reigns supreme, and without it, well you should go play a video game lol. |
| TheMightyMcClaw07-24-05, 03:46 PM | Ah, someone after my own heart.... The Ninja Swashbuckler. Of utmost importance in creating a ninja swashbuckler is to remember one word: ZORRO. When creating a multiclassed character, don't think of "he was a fighter for two levels, so he must have done this, and the ninja levels come from here..." Look at the overall themes you have in your character. You are clearly a warrior of some kind from the fighter/swashbuckler levels, probably of the more dashing and agile variant. From the Assassin and ninja levels, it seems that you are also stealthy. So what do we have? Someone who sneaks around and hits people. Pretty versatile concept. I'm going to share with you a character conept of my own I've had, which fits well to this type of character. Ahem.... Ernesto De Le Hoya appears to be the typical shallow, unassuming, and rakish sort of young academic that so many aristocratic families give birth to. But yea, when he dons his enchanted Hat of Disguise, this mild-mannered fop becomes the heroic super-fop, SHADOW PUMA! Shadow Puma is a warrior who fights for Freedom, Honor, and Justice for True Love! When villains conspire to work mischief, Shadow Puma arrives in a puff of smoke, playing his infamous theme song on a Spanish guitar. With a feathered fedora atop his head and a black scarf around his face, Shadow Puma is both stealthy and flamboyant. His flashing rapier cuts down the plans of all evil men, and his iron soul of justice never fails to save the day. Beware, Cutthroats and villains! SHADOW PUMA rules the night! This would probably work for some kind of Swashbuckler/Ninja/Bard/Holy Liberator mix, but you get the idea. |
| Ganzor07-25-05, 01:29 AM | Thanks for the tip twilight and mighty..you made a fun post m(^_^)m |
| Harrow Blade07-25-05, 05:31 AM | Finished the story above. I decided to add to the original reply rather than have it in two parts. What do you think? |
| Ganzor07-25-05, 03:17 PM | Wowza. Long, but I definitely think it's an excellent story!!! |
| Harrow Blade07-26-05, 12:26 AM | Let me know if your friend is satisfied that the story allows for that specific build. I tried to steer away from the Mr Miagi (Karate Kid) Syndrome of young adventurer adopted by master trained to be the best leaves to be adopted by another different master etc. Some things you can just learn for your self even if it is part of a structured class. It is also important to remember that the character would not think in the manner of class levels but rather this character would see himself as a whole organicly developed skill set. |
| Ganzor07-26-05, 09:28 AM | Yes, he was satisfied now with the swashbuckler, the only part he said still won't work is the ninja. Apparently "Finding someone to train you in the art of ninjitsu isn't that easy, and a fighter/swashbuckler wouldn't go out looking for such a person. They would have to find him, and the chances of that are very unlikely." Other than that, he is happy with the rest! Thank you :D |
| Harrow Blade07-26-05, 08:56 PM | True, a character finding a ninja master to train him is fairly farfetched however when a very powerful merchant with ties to a ninja clan calls in a favour and has one come to his compound to teach his guards that is an entirely different thing. |
