| WVgamer09-03-05, 09:49 PM | This is a backstory (and the path I want to take) for a character I'm currently designing. While more of an overview, if I see some demand, I might write one of his pre-campaign exploits. (sorry if this is terrible, but i just thought this up and haven't had time to refine it. I'm a much better writer ;) ) Nydu Dyrn was born into a poor part of Luskan. His mother was a wandering bard, his father a moon elf from the the Silver Marches. As his mother could no longer travel, they had little money and by the age of five, Nydu turned to the pickpocket's way of life. They made enough to get by, and eventually perfected their art of pickpocketing those who would watch her perform on the streets. Then, Nydu was forced into an even darker art. His mother, now little more than a drunkard, had taken a contract to kill an up-and-coming sorcereress. Of course, her son would be the one to do it. He took his simple dagger he was given, his knowledge of the area, and his stealth and used his art better than the sorceress used her own. For some reason, he found the blood enjoyable. He even took the time to smear it on his face before looting the body and dumping it in the docks. As he placed that dagger in his boot, attached the pouch of coins to is belt, and headed for home, he found a kind soul that would redeem him. That beautiful priestess of Tymora, Nydu never learned her name, stopped him in the alleyway on his way home and confronted him. He had seen her around, watching him just out of his limited target range, and knew that she was either going to praise him or call for the guard. She did neither, instead scolding him for taking such a risk for his skill or lack of and not taking enough of a risk to leave the comfront of that cruel home. As she walked past the young half-elf, she took the gold from his belkt without a sound and disappeared in the shadows like only Nydu could dream. With that, he headed home, and made up his mind to leave. The only thing in his way was his mother, and that obsticle was dealt with the same dagger she gave him, although he savored her blood a little less than the sorceress's. The next day, he went for the first time to a temple, and he found his patron, Tymora, Lady Luck. While he never saw that rogue preistess again, every time he took a risk for a job, he found a little more gold in his room. Then, he took a risk too far, killing a cousin of one of the high captains, and hed to leave town. When he made it home, he found that pouch from so long ago, half full of platuims, and knew that we was being rewarded for taking those risks. He left home that day, buying a mount, some wilderness gear, and enough for lodging until he made it to where he was going, even he didn't know. The rest was spent on women, booze, and to make a shrine of his old home. He currently lives just outside Longsaddle, but has given up the urban theiving to start an adult life as a treasure hunter. To get by, he is learning from an old ranger how to live off the land, and occasionally serves as a guide or messenger. He is a generally nice person that does what he needs to to get by and gives away the rest. okay, mechanics wise, he's a rogue 2/ ranger 1 who will eventually become an adapted Shade Hunter. The favored enemy is humanoid (human) since that's the only thing he's really ever killed. His alignment is CN. Feats are unknown at this time. |
| Fithero09-03-05, 10:27 PM | Its an interesting character, but i had a bit of trouble getting to story from your writing at some points. Did that priestess just rock up when he killed the sorcereress? And why did he just kill his mother? I like the fact that he worships the goddess of luck, i dont see that very often and its a good change. Over all a pretty good character. Later |
| WVgamer09-03-05, 10:39 PM | made some revisions. I thought she would make the most sense for a treasure hunter or even rogue to take her as a patron. IMHO, she's one of the most underrated dieties. Even if I have another patron, I like to mention her when something goes right, such as a kill by critical or some wierd event. |
| Fithero09-04-05, 12:54 AM | As i said, its a good character and alot could be done with him/her (sorry i seemed to have missed the characters gender... its always so hard to tell with fantasy names :P) Anyway, if you want help for ideas, just yell. Later |
| WVgamer09-04-05, 09:22 AM | okay, thanks a lot. |
| WVgamer09-04-05, 06:47 PM | just an update, but for feats I'm taking Cosmopolitan as a regional feat (cleared it with the DM, since half-elves don't have many regions, and he (the character, not the dm) was raised in a human region) and getting a masterwork dagger. My third level feat is Stealthy. |
| Bard-of-all-trades09-23-05, 12:59 AM | ... why did he kill his mother if he never left home? Nice story. It takes a huge jump from going to a temple of Tymora to getting bigger purses for riskier jobs. Technically, it seems a bit disjointed and doesn't flow very well. Lots of potential here; could be a great background for a character. Nice job. |
