We are starting an underdark evil campaign at level 12. My DM has approved me rolling a fallen paladin, which will be a Blackguard. I would like this char to be a Drow. The problem I am having is, How would an evil Drow get 11 levels of Paladin before taking Blackguard? I usually don't have any trouble coming up with a backstory, but I just can't seem to noodle this one out.

If nothing else, I will make him a human slave to a matron mother. That may be the only way I can justify him being an evil paladin in Menzzobarazzen.

Why not compromise and make him half-drow?

(BTW, this possible backstory is a little... mature. Anyone not interested in such reading should stop now.)

I could definately imagine the offspring of a human slave and a drow noble deciding to throw off the opression of his evil parent/owner and escape to start a sort of slave revolution and help guide them to the surface. He leaves behind a half-sister, another child from their mutual drow parent, and promising to return when he succeeds, he leaves his beautiful, good-hearted sister for the unknown. He seems to succeed for some time, gathering a fair number of former slaves to his side. He decides then to make a bold attempt, to free his half-sister. It had been several years since he had seen her, but he had promised her before he left that he would come back for her when the time was right. When he comes back home, he finds the slave quarter where he and his sister had been kept empty of her. He starts asking the other slaves where she had gone, but they shake their heads and ignore his questions. Then a cloaked drow woman enters. She says she will not kill him and promises to release his sister for a price. Unwilling to work with the drow, he attacks her. She quickly charms him, and tells him that all she desires is a special night with him. Being charmed, he figures that this could be his chance to convert this drowess into helping him.

All that night, she remains cloaked, talking about matters of ethics and what is truely important in life (oneself, of course) and how no one is truely trustworthy. She lies and tells him she knew that he was comming all along and found him worthy enough not to kill outright. After conjuring a globe of darkness and taking him by force within it, then proceeding to torcher him, he starts to come to the end of his rope. When the darkness leaves, he looks up at his attacker: his sister. He then knows that no one ultimately is trustworthy. Since that time, he shares a dark lifestyle with his sister, both doing the work of their spider goddess.

She could still be around as an NPC for your DM to work with or your character would have betrayed her at some point before gameplay starts.

I think I've been reading WotSQ too much... :D

Just answer one question. Why in the blue hell would his sister do that? If you can't give a valid reason, the background is moot.

Why would his sister do that, you ask? Such acts of depravity and incest are commonplace in Drow society. The sister, left in the depraved hands of drow society, could have easily turned evil, especially considering the benefits that being female usually grants one in Menzobarranzan. GREAT backstory idea. I dig it.

From the sister's POV, she could either become just another half-human slave or a semi-powerful half-drow female. I doubt she would have been good-aligned to start with; its not the kind of childhood environment that fosters selflessness. So while he's off, probably dead for all she knows, she decides to take the offer of one of the drow females and become her acoylte. She learns a lot about how to be a drow and how to use the power even a half-drow female can weild in that society. When he shows back up, she sees him a possible ally or a nice sacrifice depending on if he's as smart as she is.

What could be fun is if his sister's alignment is CN with CE tendencies. She corrupted him, but about 10 years later she show signs of weakness and/or regret.

He should also have an old slave friend who is still CG and is trying to have him repent.

Since LG is very rare in the Underdark, I wonder how he could have heard of this ideal? Perhaps his human mother told him about Ilmater when they were tortured, and it's only when she finally die that he swore to free all slave from such destiny.

He was a former paladin of Eilistraee...his mother a cleric of the same goddess. Turned evil when his companions were slain for being drow...somehow he escaped.
