Hi all. I'm making a new character for a game that's starting tomorrow, and I just wanted some thoughts/suggestions on my backstory.

Note: Half-Orcs were created in a laboratory run by a mad wizard conducting bizarre breeding experiments that created several hybrid races. When discovered, Half-Orcs were given full citizen status, and the lab was shut down.

Snek Queequeg, son of Throg and Shautha Queequeg. Younger brother of Throg and _____ (the other two PCs, one hasn't picked a name yet). Grandparents were from the lab. Our parents found each other on land, fell in love and found work on the high seas as privateers for the government. In a short amount of time our father was able to buy his own ship, Poseidon's Rage. He is the captain, our mother works as quartermaster. Eldest brother Throg (Fighter) is the ship's Master-at-Arms and fulfills the typical protective older brother role. He is following in our father's footsteps and believes heavily in the traditional obligations children have to their family. "Dad won't live forever, and who will be Captain then?"
Middle brother, ____ (Wizard), is the brainy secondboy. He was the ship's lookout, until he fell from the crow's nest. After that, he took to his cabin, studying relentlessly. Whenever we put into land, he would go ashore, seeking books.
Snek, the youngest boy (Rogue), was often picked on by the rough Half-Orc crew of the ship for being so small, so he learned the value of hiding at a young age. As he grew older, he spent more and more time in the crow's nest of the Poseidon's Rage. Alone with his eyes and his thoughts, he began to wonder about the lands he saw from his perch. When the ship would put in at port, Snek wandered ashore, often seeking out rougher areas of town, picking pockets for a thrill and to make a quick gold or two. In one town, Snek also saw an incredible bard, drumming away, and was mesmerized by the pounding beat. He promptly purchased a drum, and has been trying to teach himself to play.
More recently, Snek and ____ began discussing a plan to leave the ship and return to a life on land. ____ is seeking new knowledge, and Snek is bored with a life at sea. When the plan is discussed with Throg, however, he disapproves greatly. "We have an obligation to our father. Throg, son of Throg will not desert his family. If you go, you are cowards, and no brothers of mine."
Snek and ___ leave a few days later, and when Throg sees that he could not stop them from leaving, he seeks his parent's permission to follow and "keep them out of trouble". They, of course, consent. Shautha is more insistent that he go, as she keeps picturing the brainy ____ and the dreamy Snek dead in a ditch somewhere. The father, Throg, remains stoic. "You do what must be done. Protect your family," and gifts his son with his favorite battleaxe.

That's all I've got. I have zero ranks in Perform: Drum right now, and I'm planning to steadily increase that, maybe one point every level, as he improves. Due to the naval background, I've maxed out my ranks in Balance, Climb, Swim and Use Rope.

Any comments, ideas, or whatever are more than welcome.
Thanks for helping.

sounds great well done. is this the whole party? umm for spells for the wizard what do you have bcause there is a dragon mag that i own htat has a lot of water spells. does the fighter use light armor bcause heavey doesnt seem like a good idea on a ship, a question of proficiency. do they have proffesion boater as a skill?

Hmm...I agree with the idea of Profession: Sailor ranks, and also second the question regarding who else, if anyone, is in the party?

It's a fun, interesting backstory, definitely has a lot going for it. My question is, being both half-Orc and having fallen on his head, is ____ really cut out to be a Wizard or is that more a plot than a class thing? o_O

Finally, what's the long-term motivation? ____ wants knowledge, Snek is just "bored," and you're looking after them. Do you plan to have Throg eventually take to a life on the land (though of course returning to see his parents regularly), or is he to forever be the one insisting they all go home? What is ____ after with his spells and power? Do they want to go back and bring glory to their family, or are they out for themselves?

Just generally curious, and at least it's stuff to think on. Love your posts in the spoon thread btw. :D

Yes, this is the entire party. Just got done playing our first session, and we are now as follows:

Throg, the Fighter, is now a Fighter1/Cleric1 of Poseidon with the Wrath and Destruction domains.

Brig, the Wizard2, planning to focus mainly on Evocation and has proven he can hold his own in a fight.

Snek (me), the Rogue2, is a success at Acrobatics, but utterly worthless in combat, regardless of having a +3 on attack rolls.

As far as motivations go, it's not that simple. Brig's major drive is to expand his knowledge, but he and Snek have been discussing trying a life on land for a while now. Snek is not simply bored. During his short stints on land, he got a taste of the rogue's life. And taking what he needs from people who have it is natural instinct for him--he's been doing it his whole life. He comes from a family of privateers. Seeing that the same set of skills he grew up with in his life on the sea could be applied to life on land intrigues him. "Could my time spent hiding from the crew, climbing the mast, jumping from rope to rope, running across a slick deck in a rainstorm--Could these skills help me carve out a new life for myself and my brothers?" Snek has learned all he can on the ship. Brig wants knowledge of the outside world, while Snek is seeking to fulfill his own potential.

Throg is not the "Let's go home" wet blanket. Quite the contrary, he is "Well, if you're going to go, I'm going to help make sure you two live through it." In some ways, he is the most adamant that we accomplish everything we need to so that when we're ready we can return home as men to fulfill our familial responsibilities.

And if anybody's from New York, the brother's names have a hidden meaning.
