| Behaigo01-07-07, 05:35 PM | Hey all, I'm currently trying to make a Incubus (male Succubus) of good alignment and need help making a back story as to why he decided to become good. I have no idea where to even begin so any help would be wonderful. Thanks |

Example: The evil creature, in this case an incubus, saw an act of kindness or mercy. Perhaps he saw an angel give his/her life for another living being. This made the incubus examine his own beliefs and thus change his personal outlook on life. This type of character is quite common and might be considered cliche by some, but it's an excellent way to describe how a demon might 'fall' and become good. See Fall-from-Grace from the PC game Planescape Torment for a 'fallen' succubus. 2. Just different from everyone else. (i.e. Drizzt clone) Example: Born different from everyone else of the same racial group with a strong personal sense of honor, etc. Read any book on Drizzt to get into his mindset. Drizzt exemplifies this type of character. This type of character is seen more often than not, unfortunately for me pretty much everyone else in my current gaming party seems to play this type of character. My personal taste runs against this particular backstory simply because it is overused. This backstory would work quite nicely if everyone in my gaming party didn't copy Drizzt. Your mileage may vary. |

Two words Brain Damage A knock on the head in just the right way can make all the difference :) (being nursed back to health by some kind and caring individual doesnt hurt :) |
| WolfHati01-10-07, 04:26 AM | Or perhaps it wasn't a sudden revelation or starting out different, but simply that he was away from the rest of his evil kind for a while, maybe because of exile, leeing some other powerful demon he'd teed off, or maybe some other mroe creative reason. During the time roaming the prime material plane, he ended up associating with decent people, and not being in the midst of an evil structure, had put up a show of being an upright to fit in and not draw attention. And eventually it became more than just a mask he was wearing. He actually grew to like his neighbors, became friends with some of the locals. And then something happened, maybe the demon he was fleeing caught up, destroyed his new home, maybe something else, and he stood up for his friends and neighbors, and realized that he wasn't the same person, he actually regretted his past, was apalled at much of what he had done. And so set out to right the chaos and destruction he had caused, or at least do something to balance it out. |

| Behaigo01-10-07, 10:13 PM | Thanks for all the help guys, its been very useful. I still have a few more days until we play with these chars and any more reason would be more than welcome. |
| Adrian_Crane01-10-07, 10:19 PM | The one I'm using: forced into it :D He's found himself alone and without evil allies in a place where his very nature is a liability--so, if you can't beat em, join em! The central idea is that you've been cut off from your little world of evil friends for whatever reason, and you can't go back to how things were. Perhaps he's been exiled for looking the wrong way at one of the powers-that-be, or maybe he just somehow got monumentally lost through his own doing (good for a clueless low-WIS type). The one thing is, this is a more gradual progression; my own character was CE during his backstory, he's CN as of level 1, and he might end up actually becoming CG, though it'll be a slow process. Essentially, your character is reining in his impulses and trying to control himself a bit because he knows running around and leaving destruction behind will get him unwanted attention. At first, the whole thing is meant to be a temporary state, just something he has to do to survive. Let a commoner live here, avoid stealing the crown jewels there, and it adds up to less folks out for his hide. Eventually, he starts to appreciate having a good reputation and not being a kill-on-sight target for every individual he runs into and every paladin with something to prove. He might still be chaotic (if that's your Law/Chaos preference), but he isn't so much "unchecked evil" anymore as he is just acting for his own good. In the final stage, he actually becomes good as his eyes are fully opened to the potential of a life well lived. |
| strenoth01-11-07, 02:45 AM | mmm, i'll give you a reverse of osmehting I thought up of a succubus: So there's a lady of high status and good character he is supposed to seduce and betray in such a way as to corrupt her, perhaps even get so far as to marrying her with plans of breaking her heart (coudl be plans to make her vengeful and become a blackguard if she is a paladin). The twist is, in the process of acting such a perfect gentleman as to win the paladin's heart (and of course whith his demonic evil aura cloaked), he finds himself genuinly enjoying this way of life, and eventually confesses to her his true nature and mission and how he couldn't do it because he is in love with her. He offers hsi very life to be hers for the taking, she does not of course, and they live out the rest of her days in marital bless, and he carries on the path of goodness after her death from old age, keeping the memory of her love alive in his heart, until the day he is to join her |

Everyone, thanks for all the help, I have one day to go until we play and you have all been a lot of help. |
| TrashCrap01-11-07, 09:45 PM | I know I read some prestige class somewhere (epic lvl handbook i believe) that had the ability that you could hit an evil person soooooo hard, they had to make a dc save or repent their evil ways and become good. |
| Jaisin01-11-07, 10:58 PM | Book of Exalted Deeds has a 'Sanctified Creature' template, and also a spell called sanctify the wicked that causes the change. It could be that simple. Alternately, the same book has rules for atonement and redemption of evil characters. Explore there for some inspiration. |
