| Moumni_Bachir06-24-05, 09:57 PM | I really need some help rolepaying a Chaotic Good human Barbarian from the north playing in Thay. I really don't know where to start since the only kind of Barbarian that I know are the Rashemenian. If you have any advice, or comments to tell me about this choice it would be very useful and appreciated. |
| Moumni_Bachir06-25-05, 01:20 PM | Anyone can help? The Barbarian will be from the Vaasa country side. |
| Moumni_Bachir06-26-05, 06:00 PM | I know, my request is really unusual but if you think of something realtively to a Barbarian coming from the north I'll take it with a big smile! |
| Harrow Blade06-26-05, 09:48 PM | If I remember correctly a number of tribes from the north worship Totem animal spirits and much of thier culture, dress and style of fighting is based on that totem. You could wear the skin of a polar bear and use claws as weapons and offer thanks to the great white bear for each victory in battle. You could refer to your rage as drinking the bear spirit's power. There are a number of different totems that you could choose from. try and make yourself unique, different from everyother great axe weilding barbarian. Any way just a sugestion take it or leave it. for more background stuff check the link in my sig |
| Moumni_Bachir06-27-05, 09:15 AM | Thank you, for your time and your ideas it's really appreciated. I love the totem idea, where can I find more information about it, I heard that in Unearthed Arcana there are some but heard too that when you choose one you loose some of your classic Barbarian abilities (like the faster movement, the trap sense and dodges things) The roleplay will be excellent especially if I find the meaning of the totem, do you know if there is some article about them? Thank you again, you were very helpful. |
| Harrow Blade06-28-05, 12:18 AM | i don't remember where I read the totem info. It may be in one of the Forgotten realms source book or maybe I am thinking 2e. I am glad you appreciate the ideas. |
| Abyssal Stalker06-28-05, 02:26 AM | I think that there is quite a bit of the totems in The Unapproachable East. There is also a lot of Rashemen, if you are interested in them. Thay and Rashemen are old enemies, and Thay has lots of Rashemi slaves. It could even make a background for your character. It is a bit of a cliche, but the escaped slave -thing might work for your character! I remember that there is also something about the totems in some of the Faerun-books...not sure which. Maybe Players Guide to Faerun or something like that... |
| Moumni_Bachir06-28-05, 09:03 AM | Thank you! Unfortunately, I wanted to make a Rashemen first but my DM told me that we could not have our persos created in the unapprochable east so that's why I decided to get a Barbarian from Vaasa. I'll check forward for totem in the Unnaprochable east. And Maybe you have some other ideas about a Barbarian from the north! ;) |
| Abyssal Stalker06-28-05, 09:31 AM | Well...The environment in Vaasa is probably quite cold and Thay is a warm place. So you should think how you react on the heat. Maybe it's nice to have warmth, or maybe you don't like it at all and keep complaining about it. Then you might have some stories related to your totem animal. Maybe your shamans have told you that the spirit of the totem animal lives in you. Or you might have proven your worth by taking out bare-handed such an animal. Just some ideas. I think that you should wear clothes that resemble the totem animal you choose. For example pelts of the totem animal. Then you could paint your face when preparing for war "to bring out the spirit of the totem animal". And so on. Don't remember what totems there were, but you should choose an animal typical to Vaasa. Something like a wolf, a bear, a raven or an eagle! |
| Moumni_Bachir06-28-05, 10:47 AM | I love the idea of wearing the pelts, I'll ask my DM if he'll let me an additional +2 to Intimidation when wearing my pelt ;) ! Since we are in Thay, where it's really cosmopolitan I don't know about wearing the Pelt. If we want to get by without troubles I mean! Anyway thank you for your help and ideas, If you have anything else coming to your mind about the Vaasian Barbarian do not hesitate, I'll take everything. I made a mix of all your ideas and it seems really fun to play, I can't wait to start Thanks again. |
| Ty06-28-05, 11:12 AM | The best comparison for Vassa would be middle ages Russia/Siberia. Cold, forbidding, harsh, and full of physically and mentally tough people. One thing to keep in mind is that Vassan's have seen pretty much everything from multiples of dragons, to half-orc cities, to being ruled over by a Witch-King with ties to Orcus. "Life's a B***h and then you die" is a likely atitude. |
| Moumni_Bachir06-28-05, 11:34 AM | I like the comparison with Russian/Siberian. It was exaclty what I had in mind And you seem to know a lot of things about Vaasa, I searched a lot about documentation of it. But I didn't find much maybe you now a book or an internet site about it? Thank you. |
| Abyssal Stalker06-30-05, 02:20 AM | About the Russian/Siberian style: Have you watched the movie "Highlander"? In the first part there is the bad guy, Kurgan. He seems to be quite barbaric and that style might just be something you are looking for! Of course I mean the medieval-time-Kurgan... And of course you don't have to be evil like he is... |
