Hi,

This idea is actually kinda stolen from some thread I read on this forum a while ago, but I forgot the person's name so thanks for the idea whoever originally thought of it.

Anyways, I was thinking that this storyline would be really cool for a PC who is either a fighter or a barbarian.

Basically, the PC is an extremely powerful evil being, probably an epic blackguard. He (or she) made a deal with an evil diety to lead their forces on whatever battlefield (you know the drill). However, as the PC gained more and more power, the diety realized that it is better just to get rid of the PC. Sending many powerful minions, they fight with the PC. The PC gets whomped, but manages to slay all the minions. The diety never learns about the PC's death, but thinks that their minions handled it, even if they haven't reported back. The PC also loses memory, and the battle took place on the material plane near the city or town or whatever location the campaign is going to start. The character I was thinking of would most likely be a human male of age 33 or something, because it took a while of adventuring to become an epic blackguard at the height of his power.

The PC I have in mind would not be evil anymore, because all of his ideals have been wiped out by amnesia. What I am unsure about is whether the PC (starting at lvl1), would be cooler as a barbarian or a fighter. I thought that barbarian is a lot cooler to roleplay such things as his memory coming back, so fits of rages as he remembers all the vile things he did in the past. Also, since he has no memory, he will probably be confused and angry, hence the barbarian idea. Being a past blackguard, and as I envisioned it, a very lawful evil kinda guy, he would probably not have had that barbarian wildness pre-amnesia. He obviously might have it now. Also, do you think it is okay to have his stats back to normal lvl1 32 point buy stats? I mean, that is the point buy I will be using, so it seems unlikely that an epic blackguard would be so weak as soon as he had amnesia. I'm leaning a bit towards fighter because fighters depend on combat styles to be powerful, hence the amnesia caused him to forget the styles and lvl1 fighter it is. That way, the low str, dex, and con stats as compared to epic make more sense.

I know this is really confusing (I'm very bad at writing out ideas), but which class do you think fits better?

I'm (kinda) playing something very similar to this in an online game. I started a thread about it a little while ago. This sounds almost exactly like my character, except for the amnesia thing.

Anyway, it sounds like he was a fighter before his memories were destroyed. I say make him a barbarian/fighter, keeping the levels roughly equal. The barbarian levels represent how the way he acts and thinks has changed, while the fighter levels represent his past- the memories may be gone from the mind, but the body remembers.

I think it makes little sense that a deity would completely forget about a PC it took such a keen interest in seeing destroyed. Instead, the PC should simply be hit by a bolt of unholy lighting and blasted to ashes...

... and simultaneously, somewhere else across Faerūn, a comatose man in a hospital ward suddenly wakes up. He looks a bit like the blackguard (always has), and shares some memories with the dead blackguard, but is mostly amnesiac. Is he the same man, reborn through another bodily vessel? Is he simply another facet of the dead blackguard, this time the (very) good side (since the blackguard was the very evil side)?

Of course, another deity is behind that rebirth. A deity that opposes the blackguard's deity. Lathander (god of birth, youth and spring) might have pulled this trick to oppose Talos (god of destruction). The two deities are opposed, as one seeks to foster life, whereas the other wishes to destroy it.

Of course, the blackguard need not have been hit by a lightning bolt; he could have fallen in battle against the god's minions. If he wakes up in the body of a comatose man (who might have been him all along, too, you never know, kinda like in a David Lynch movie), it could explain his stats being "back to normal 32-point buy".

As far as class goes, I'd go with fighter. You don't have to play a barbarian to become enraged. A barbarian's rage is something beyond words, a true berserk fury that's rooted in blood and a love of battle. If you like my idea, you could even go for paladin after a few fighter levels, representing your fighter's resolve to bury the past and turn away from it entirely.

Yeah, I think it was sort of borrowed from your idea illithid tentacles.

Actually, I think LiXinjian's comment about fighter's still going into rages is fine enough, I don't need barbarian levels just for my character to be angry. However, I'm not sure about the comotose man somewhere else who suddenly gains his memories. Maybe while battling the minions my PC falls in battle, and because he died to such powerful entities, when Lathander or some other good god revives him so that he can show his followers and the world that evil can be redeemed, the PC loses a ton of levels and his previous power. However, Lathander or whatever god knows he has the potential to be a warrior of light. Obviously, since the evil diety in fact killed him, his minions and the diety believe he is dead, but in fact the good diety revived him to add a potential great warrior to good's side. And since he is starting back at lvl1, the evil diety, and other evil dieties who once sought out his immensely powerful blackguard powers, can no longer sense his presence alive unless they tried hard to search for him. I don't think I'll make him a paladin/
