| fullmetal8011008-11-06, 01:41 PM | I am running a barbarian and soon to be champion of gwynharwyf, it is just a barbaric paladin. So what i have a mephling also, which is in the planar handbook. It's a small race that is well a half mephit, they have some cool stuff in there on them but i am getting a little stuck. He is going to be Chaotic Good, and he is going insanely good, with the perspective of if it evil, i kill it. He will be doing that alot too, he has the detect evil ability coming for him soon so he will sense and swing pretty much. Thx for your help. |
| Sikyanakotik08-11-06, 02:40 PM | So planning to play a Paladin of Freedom then? Actually, "if it's evil, I kill it" sounds more like Lawful Neutral, or even Lawful Stupid, to me. Don't forget, being merciful is a large part of playing a good character, especially one devoted to good. That's not to say that sometimes a good-old-fashioned smiting isn't in order, but no Paladin of Justice or Freedom would kill a someone just because their evil detector went ping, especially if there's a good chance they could be redeemed. Now, killing them because they had commited a specific crime, or to prevent them from enacting an imminent evil, would certainly be within your purview. But detect evil does not give you a carte blanche to commit murder, which would be a certain carte rouge for your paladinhood. That's not to say such character isn't possible, or even fun. He's just not a Paladin, unless you count Paladins of Slaughter. How exactly is this character a "savage" anyways, besides killing the innocent guilty? |
| fullmetal8011008-11-06, 04:06 PM | My mephling is going into a paladin like class, but he is no paladin, smashing heads of evil is his thing, and we have someone in the party who is usually trying to save people, so the numbers equal out i think :D , but ya he isn't a paladin. |
| Wyrmul08-11-06, 07:44 PM | If the mephling is all about smashing the heads of evil as you put it the he should probably go with a Knight or a strait fighter. That way he doesn't loose all the paladin abilities as he moves away from the good alignment. There is nothing saying a LN knight cant be dedicated against evil, his methods may not qualify him for Good alignment. |
| Stormbrand08-11-06, 07:57 PM | Look in more detail at the rest of his behaviour. Insanely good involves making sacrifices for the benefits of others, compassion and understanding. Simply I hate evil is not how good works. |
| JulesCARV08-12-06, 03:58 AM | I would say that a barbarian with an "if it's evil, kill it" viewpoint could, in a world where being evil is very rare and has very stern requirements (i.e., not Eberron: evil must be the purview of the most wicked 0.01% of the populace, not an ordinary, if somewhat immorality prone, 25%), work for a chaotic good barbarian. Bear in mind, though, that if you live in such a world, where evil is very rare but very intense, most of your enemies will probably be neutral (i.e., the evil cleric at the top might be evil, but his goblin warrior guards will probably mostly be neutral); as such, you would still not kill them indiscriminately and still be good. Even with these caveats for playing a "if it's evil, kill it" chaotic good barbarian, though, I would say, however, that it would not work for an exalted chaotic good barbarian, as laid out in the early bits of BoED, which is required for having the Knight of Stars feat, which is, in turn, required for the Champion of Gwynharwyf prestige class. |
| Pegasos98908-15-06, 10:47 AM | Well, from the start, I would -as a DM - never allow that point of view for ANY non-evil character... If someone is evil, it means he will put his own benefit above others'. If that is enough reason to kill someone, you shouldn't be let even near the good alignment! What good character would do? In case someone can't be redeemed and is not clearly a threat to the innocent and puppies, he should not be killed cause he has diffrent view of the world. Tha is so lawful-evil that it is nearly rediculous! Even if other one is threat, he should first be tried to imprison and somehow made harmless instead of killing. For any good character, killing should be the last option when all other ones have failed. You detect evil in someone and kill him, just to notice that he was only some really greedy merchant - his two daughters and wife are no without anyone to keep them alive! Detect-and-smite attitude is so opposite of CG as you can get. For that character, I would recommend lawful-evil alignment or possibly lawful-neutral as a follower of cuthbert. |
