I recently began preparing a character concept that has been nosing around my brain for quite some time. An aspiring gnomish (g)novelist whose primary reason for adventuring is to find material for his next book. He isn't really a very good writer and he's often rather pompous and vain, but he makes up for it with being indefatigably chipper and with a backpack full of odds and ends, that joke about the Cleric of Nerull, the wedge of cheese and the saxophone player, and with three ranks in Profession (Cook). Hey, you've gotta make a living somehow. His is known as... Salazar dePlume, explorer exemplary and expounder extraordinare! Remember that name!

Since the campaign is starting at third level, I gave him an ancestral pair of light maces as weapons. One is named Brightchime (masterwork alchemical silver) and the other is called Darktoll (masterwork cold iron). These come from an ancient bardic ancestor, and the maces double as a pair of masterwork bells with different notes. While dual-wielding, Salazar can ding out a cheerful battle melody (not Bardic Music) on the kneecaps of whatever horrible, sweaty, philistine enemy of the arts currently stands between him and his next chapter.

Tweaks and suggestions welcome, as I'm not at all certain what Salazar might have been doing before he began adventuring. Also, a prize to whoever can find the horrible, steel-toed pun lurking in the description. (Prizes to be announced.)
