Hey all, this is my first real post. I was wondering how you guys typically deal with the concept of scarring, or other physical damage to characters in light of magical healing. I was reading up on Planescape: Torment and the main character (a guy with extreme regeneration, to the point that he'll be resurrected shortly after dying) is covered from head to toe in scars from his lifetime(s) of damage and healing. Do you consider magical healing to totally remove any traces of damage, or does it leave a scar? I think of arcane spells that mend physical objects with no trace of damage...

I personally like the idea of flavor of traces remaining, although you run the risk of a given character looking like a jigsaw puzzle at as he gets on in levels. Maybe only wounds that do incredible damage, or resulted in the (temporary) death of the PC?

Whaddya think?

I only have my characters suffer a scar if the wound is worth remembering.

For instance; one of my characters was turned evil by shard of glass that invoked a powerfull form of greed within him. To make sure that nobody else took the shard away, he tried (successfully...twice) to swallow the glass shard. The sides of his mouth, aswell as the insides of his throat were scarred (giving him an odd smile and a husky voice)

Also, that same character was targeted by some sort of suicide spell... he attacked himself with his spiked chain... got a double critical. So he wrapped it around his neck and yanked on it... nearly decapatating himself (went into negatives) but was saved by the cleric.

I (aswell as my group) found these wounds to be memorable, so i gave the characters the scars.

I do some scars. Basically, my rule for my characters is this:
- If there was no magic involved in the healing process.
- If a single blow cut more than 50% of my HP.
- If there was a significant event that caused the injury.
- If the injury is something the character will remember.

The last time I played in a game with my original 3.0/3.5 group the DM gave my Dark elf bladesinger a scar during a solo encounter with a rakshasas. Melf's acid arrow to the shoulder resulting in a scar shaped like a seven-pointed star.

Acid and fire are things that I think would leave scars, hell it will even scar a troll so that must count for something.
