Beguilers background [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-10-08, 04:06 PM i don't like it when i can only come up with one background story. i personally like to come up with a few ideas (all very different) and then brainstorm about it for an evening with some friends to come up with a nice mix.

with the beguiler however, i always seem to have the same image in mind. he's always this arrogant untrustworthy loner, because of his focus of enchantments and illusions. this never really makes him trully good although he could think he does good.

my story: raised in the city, he knows little of far adventures. Raised in a family were it was ever person for himself he tried to finance his education, in mastering his arcana powers, by working as a messenger boy between districts within the city. At the beginning these were simple messages of changes going on. Later he was acknowledged by temples and got more holy messages to send out to the people. Sometimes people didn't like the announcements and started to attack him for reasons he didn't understand. In those situations he would use his arcana knowledge to get out of it, cheating himself out of harm.
As his reputation of staying out of harm grew more people got interested in hiring him. When he got home one day he found a letter with the question if he wanted to work for a guild, which was known to people to be a thiefguild.As he understood that thiefguilds are tollerated to keep the crime rate low and in order, he didn't see any reason to object and thus started working for them.
He got trusted with more important information every time he went on a mission and sometimes people assaulted him, trying to get the information he was carrying. his life started to grow more dangerous with every mission and he had to wear armor and slowly becomes more streetwise.
*after this there will be a happening in his life which motivates him to leave the city and wander around.*

my questions to the people out there:
1. Could you please share your creative thoughts about my story?
2. How could a beguiler background be completly different and maybe even trustworthy?

Another thing i would like to ask: He won't be combat active at all and the only combat move he will do is coup de grace as he can only do subdual damage with his whelm.
although killing is for many adventurers a normal thing, this guy has no reason to kill.... but i have to give him a reason as he will get around to it when he'll be adventuring... any ideas?

city is waterdeep in forgotten realms. the adventure we started was close to it, so that's how i picked it. I'm a Sun elf, adopted bij normal elves, which brings some problems with it. my parents were more forced to care for me as they were members of a helping organization. i have no story yet about how i came there.
my parents were distant to me, never helping me with my life as they said that everyone should work their own way to the top. they personaly didn't like sun elves that much at the time of adoption as they thought that all sun elves were too arrogant.

he has a massive Intelligence(20), a good wisdom(16) and his strength is low(8). main skills are diplomatic stuff like knowledge local, bluff, diplomacy, sense motive... that stuff. he has no skills in Hide and move silent as i didn't want to make him to rogueish. he also has maxed Use magic device which i try to explain by saying that he was also a deliveryboy at one point, bringing important items to people...... sometimes he would try the items, to see what they do.

i seem to be able to explain all the stats on my charsheet, but i'm still looking for his personality. My mind is blank when i have to think about how his environment has effected him.

nobody who can help me with this? i though beguilers weren't an uncommon playing class..
my main problem is personallity but i guess that if i find a good reason for him to start traveling, i can come up with some traits..

why would a person who has lived in a city and with luxury suddenly want to enter the dragons cave, attack the bugbear camp and fight the undead???
