My group is creating a new set of 1st Lvl characters, and I thought that it'd be "interesting" to play a blind human sorcerer that specializes in touch attacks. The idea has been authorized, but we're a little stumped on the mechanics of playing a blind character. We have some thoughts and ideas, mainly allowing me to have the feat blind-sight without all the prereqs that it normally incurs. Any other thoughts/suggestions on this idea? Any input will be appreciated.

Perhaps your empathic link with your familiar (if you take one) allows you to see at times through your familiar's eyes.

Otherwise, I think the character concept allows for very interesting situations for roleplaying. Good luck.

if you want to make him amusing, you can have him take a guess at how people look when he meets them. For example:

Blind Sorceror: Ooh, wait don't tell, your blonde right?!? I know your blonde I can just feel it!

Random person: No actually, Im...

Blind Sorceror: Wait! Don't tell me! Redhead! Aha! I thought so!

Random Person: Um...

Blind Sorceror:Brunette?!?

Random Person:Im bald actually.

Blind Sorceror:Oh, ok. Ok now I bet I can guess your eye color!

Well i runned a blind character a short while ago, (look at my nick) , it was really an amusing character, and i encourage you to try it . Loads of fun !
About the mechanics, my Dm gave the character the blind fight feat automatically and a +2 to listen checks, also he developed a 1st lvl spell that let me read by laying my hands on a book for 1hr/lvl , very interesting, and the character was developing a spell called Blind writing, wich would let him write a diary and his spellbooks . (he started as a cleric, then turned to a wizard.).
Anyways, if you want any help, or opinion, just ask me , iḋ be glad to help .

Give him a white quarterstaff to act as his guide when he is walking about.

Actually, a guide cane isn't a bad idea. Neither is a familiar that can guide you, magically or not. I'm not suggesting a seeing eye dog, but perhaps an owl that perches on your shoulder, nudging you in the right direction. If your DM says that you can telepathically talk to your familiar, then you are pretty much set. Your friends need never know how you always know what's happening around you. Some DMs think that masters and familiars only communicate feelings. Ask yours. I don't know much about the rules for fighting without seeing, so I can't help you there. Just my thoughts.

The varieties of communication change troughout the levels. At first it's just feelings (at least from familiar to master, not sure it if it's more advanced allready the other way), but that will change later on....

On topic: Awesome idea. I like the idea of bonuses on certain skills. +2 seems a little meager though. What I'm wondering is how you will deal with being flat-footed, cause basically, you'll always lose your DEX bonus in an attack. Your DM may decide otherwise, of course (Dare Devil sorta effects maybe?), but it does require a good talk with your DM...

Good luck anyway...

As i said before, this is a very nice concept.. i really enjoyed playing it, the familiar can be a big help, so as the cane or quarterstaff .

About the +2 to skills .. yes maybe a litle meager.. but we have very uncerpowered games here.. not ful of magical stuff and so forth.. the first magic item we touched was when we were about 5th level.. (a realy nice greatsword +1)

About being flat-footed.. if i recall correctly i was always considered flat-footed..

Well, it is a really good experience.. i guarantee .. i remember i had a good bonus on intuit direction (kinda logical) , thus when outdoors i was the one leading the group.. because the barbarian (the only other character with intuit direction always got 2 īs or 3īs on his dice...
