| Agifem02-02-05, 08:06 AM | Hi everyone ! This is my first post here, so i hope i won't get you bored already. I was looking for help on developping a character, mostly choosing RP-fitted classes, feats and spells. We started playing a campaign in the Forgotten Realms, in Waterdeep (although i have the feeling we will move in the planes), and i decided to play a Wizard specialized in Divination, originating from Thay. She is Lawful Neutral, often uses illusion and divination spells (as she thinks knowledge is the most important thing in the world). Her goal in life is to earn influential positions (via political ways) and wealth. The campaign seems not too much combat-oriented, which suits me perfectly. Basically, i would like to hear people's opinions on classes, prestige classes, feats and spells choices for her, as i don't know the whole books. My DM has the PHB, DMG, Monster Manual, and Magic of Faerun, but i'm open to suggestions even outside those. Homerules are : -One feat every 2 levels instead of 3. Basically a feat every odd level. -One attribute increment every 3 levels instead of 4. -Cross-class skills only cost 1 for 1. -All 2+int skills classes are now 4+int. I was thinking about two classes : Red Wizard of Thay (the very reason why my character is thayan) and the Incantatrix. |

You'll need the Tattoo Focus feat (must be taken at first level), two metamagic or item creation feats (you get one, Scribe Scroll, for free) and shave your head. Hey, they always leave out some important flavor. All Red Wizards (save some of the Zulkirs, but you try to cut their hair) usually have a shaved head. Spell Focus (anything) is always good, though divination usually is a poor choice for this. |

| Trydan02-03-05, 07:20 AM | Divination is usually weak in D&D computer games, but it tends to be powerful in pencil-and-paper D&D. Scrying, Detect Thoughts, Identify, Tongues and Clairaud/voayance are all very useful. For combat, Divination doesn't offer anything directly, but consider how you could possibly use True Strike. For example, although not directly relevant here, True Strike plus holy-smite is a nice combination. True Strike also uses on a verbal component, so get the feat Silent Spell for a complete stealth-sniper (especially if you can pick up ranks in Hide cheaply). Perhaps with a cross-bow? For roleplaying, consider the tools of divination. Rune stones, Dice, Divining cards (e.g. Tarot), knuckle-bones, crystal balls, entrails, etc. You may even wish to have some as props (not the entrails, though  ). Make a point of reading the omens (the flight of birds, the change in the weather, etc.). You could even go in for horoscopy (sp?), palm-reading, or other sorts of fortune telling. |

The PrCs: Divine Oracle (for Complete Divine) and Loremaster (DMG) works best for your concept. These classes favor mystical knowledge. I just think the Divine Oracle is an awesome PrC for any wizards: since you get d6, some roguish/evasion abilities, full spell progression, and access to a domain. All you need is one dump feat (Skill Focus: Knowledge, Religion). And it fits with Trydan's ideas. A wizard I once played almost went into Divine Oracle, later on I might had dabbled into Thaumaturgist (but that'll take some creative work to learn Planar Ally). Sadly, that campaign died out. I don't know what feats/spells to pick up outside the generic ones for any wizard. My wizard took Extend Spell (that's useful with right spells: Summons and Acid Arrow), Ecshrew Materials (but that's trival, more for flavor), Energy Subsitution: Sonic (as Sonic Ball as a different kick from a Fireball; you can pick the energy that suits your taste). Collegate Wizard (from Complete Arcane) is something I would had considered too. |
| Dishliquid02-03-05, 05:54 PM | I would suggest you look into the Void Disciple, they have a d6 HD, it continues your spell progression, and gives you very handy abilities for divining. I think a Bard/Void Disciple would be pretty nasty. (EDIT) The PrC is in Complete Divine. |
| Agifem02-04-05, 10:08 AM | Thanks for all the tips :) I think i'll go with a Wizard / Air Elemental Savant / Planeshifter / LoreMaster. A few good electrical spells to help my party, a few good planar teleport spells for tricky situations, and a few loremaster bonii that suits my character nicely. |
