Well, I have had a character concept for a little while that i wanna stat up. Its a FR realms character, a gnome who worships Gond. I want him to able to build gadgets and invetive non-magical things to get out of situations. Im not sure if i want him to be an NPC in a campaign im running, or a PC for some other time. Are there any suggestions that would help make this engenieering character work? I dont even know what class to be.

Try the Artificer (it's a base class). I dunno where it's from (I think Eberron, not sure), but I've heard only good things about it. Seems to fit exactly what you're thinking about.
Good luck!

If you go this way, you might want to work out some method with your DM about crafting times. Some ways the system works really well, but others it doesn't at all. I ran into trouble making a trapmaker...he tried to join an army and assist with your standard series of pitfalls and traps. The system as it was written gave him some trouble. :)

Then again, I've not read the Artificer class, it might help. Best of luck with the gnome, he sounds great!

Expert.
Artificer.
Barbarian.
Wizard.
Rogue.
Cleric.

All have craft skill... I'd go with artificer if that's all you've got, though I'd be tempted to make a barbarian who builds things, playing against the stereotype... I'd likely make him a kobold to boot, seeing as how that would really create confusion.
