Having just set my hands upon the Complete Arcane for the first time, I have to say that the Warmage strikes me as one of those classes that just begs to be abused by powergamers. It seems like the entire flavor of the class is built around "look how many more dice I get to roll now!", but I just know it has to have more meat then that. And because of this crazy notion of mine, I'm dead set on playing one as my next character.

My current plan is to play him as the "overly strict ex-marine stepdad" archetype from popular culture: obsesses over perfection and order, overbearing towards those he feels its his duty to "whip into shape", uncomfortably awkward in situations where tenderness or change is a factor, slow to give his trust but ultimately a staunch ally, etc.

However, I want to hear all of your ideas for a warmage that is not just an artillery cannon but an honest-to-goodness playable character with some depth to him. How would you build and play him? Any input will be appreciated.

Its kinda hard since he will most likely be first level, but have him retell war stories. The horror.... the horror :P

Apart from that, stick with what youve got... become a sort of "bigger brother" to some of the less combat orientated party members and a "comrade" (sp) to the tanks.

Good luck with it

For a first level char. you could also go with the join the army and they will pay for college idea, or in this case warmage accademy. You just finished or are in your mandetory service to repay the cost of training you. You are fresh and ready to make a name for yourself but will the extra training you got in warmage school really help you improve your lot in life or were you just blinded by shiny metals and carefully edited stories. This type of char. could go alot of differnt ways as I see it. From getting disenfranchiesed over the narrow scope of his spells and the realization his skill set that he worked so hard for is useless in civilian life to finding the magic and disiplin he learned as a soldier is invaluable to him or her in regular life to a man who has learned alot and now realizes he must add to the base that the military war mage knowlage has started him with and grow beyond it. Hope that helps a little.

Maybe he was just what you said: Somebody's ex-marine stepfather. Maybe during peacetime, he met somebody who had been the wife of a dead comrade of his, impulsively married her (it seemed like the right thing to do at the time) and took on the responsibility of raising his kids. Only he was too tidy. He was too strict. His dead war buddy had been an artist that had been conscripted and his wife and kids were artsy fartsy liberals as well. No matter how hard he loved them, as they got to know him more and more, the more they came to hate him until eventually one afternoon after coming home from market, he found the house empty. Clothes were gone, money was gone. Kids and wife? Gone. And a note. Simply reading "Goodbye."

He's adventuring now to find his lost wife and children (perhaps even thinking that they must have been abducted). The same traits that drove his family away (as good natured and well intended as they were) are now the very same ones he needs in order to find them. Discipline, Dedication, Strength.

He will find them. Oh yes. He will find them.
