Im trying to put together a concept I thought up after a Deadlands game I was going to play in never started. I wanted to play a gunslinging cowboy, and since there's a D&D game starting up that I have an invite to, I decided to try to pull off my gunslinger in that.

Since the only class I could think of that can trade ranged shots well without pulling out a longbow is a Warlock, thats where I started.

I got a decent discription of my lanky, cowboy hat wearing human warlock, a decent idea on feats, but I don't have a clue where to start on a backstory.

Does anyone have some ideas?

Its pretty useful.
If you want more specific help you'll have to show me what you've already got on your background. The description would help as well.

I've thought of making a gunslinger in DnD too... some things I found:

As cool as dual-wielding repeating hand crossbows would be, it's just not possible to make into a viable character.
Warlock might be nice, but is a little slow on the draw, only ever getting 1 shot per round... plus, the other invocations are a big part of the class.
What I thought might be nice is the Mindbow from Complete Psionic. You can find the prestiege class in the CPsi excerpts, and the Soulknife base class in the SRD.

Backstory-wise, either way you go, there's no real reason to get too complicated with it. Maybe go look up some old western heroes... say you learned to shoot on the family farm, and thought it was just a neat trick until you had to go out and hunt/slay/kill/soldier for yourself.

I've looked over the soulbow, but it doesn't work for me flavor wise.

To solve the slow on the draw problem, I plan to grab Quicken Spell-Like Ability as well as Maximize Spell-Like Ability.

For a discription on my Cowboy, I decided to keep it simple. Brown eyes, brown hair, 6 ft, 150 lbs, brown cowboy hat, leather vest, longsleeved shirt, pants, and boots. Instead of pouring cross class skill points into ride, I was goint to rely on a high dex to make him a credible rider.

I don't have a clue how a ranch hand would discover he had arcane powers or why he'd leave the ranch.

Sorcerors tend to find out when they get into a heated argument and the next moment the thatch of the roof is on fire.

Something similar could have happened to your character.
One moment he was milking the cow. Cow trods on his feet and the next moment the cow is running around in complete panic and your cowboy is looking at his still smoking hand going O_O!

That's a great idea. My charector got fired for accidently barbequing a couple of cows. Thanks for the help!

dont warlocks have to sell part of their souls though? isnt that why their so disliked?

I could be wrong, but if that is the case, then perhaps if you wanted to go for a sort of 'Ghost Rider' thing. You could have had you character sold his soul (or part of) in the past to save someone he loves. He saved him/her but now he is stuck with the taint of a demon for life.

Just a though.

Love the idea of a cowboy warlock though... bloody gold:D

6 ft, 150 lbs

Haha... I dunno about that. I'm 6 feet tall almost exactly (plus maybe half an inch), I weigh 160 pounds, and I'm skinny as hell. Like, clearly visable ribs and stuff. I have no fat on me, granted, but that's only because of lots of time at the gym and a very active lifestyle.

I don't know anyone who's 6 feet tall and 150 pounds. Biology would suggest that someone like that has very fine bone structure, almost no muscle, and unless they're absolutely skeletal in appearance, a high percentage of body fat. In other words... someone incabable of standing up to the rigors of an adventuring life. I know I'D hate to be that person!

I'm basically trying to imagine myself minus ten pounds of muscle, and I think if I was unfortunate enough to have that build, I'd be pretty damn useless at anything other than surviving in todays world.

I'm sure a functioning adventurer, even one who's not combat oriented, would be in better shape, and more muscular, than I.

A minor point to be sure, but its better to be more accurate than less. It's also a bit of a sore point; I hate seeing unbelievable characters described on character sheets.

In High School I was just under 6 foot and weighed 154 and I wrestled/ ran track. Though unusual to maintain that weight much beyond the late teens it's not completely imposible. I weigh right around 210 now at the same height. I was skin and bones then, but more than capable of getting bye. Was I of adventruing stock, probably not, but I think very few of us are.

A Lanky farmhand though would probably tip the scales closer to the 170+ range at 6'.

I once played a gunslinger type with wands. Similar backstory to what you've layed out here acctually. Worked pretty well. Very fun to play.
