| Orion Polaris12-11-03, 10:34 PM | Str: 13 Dex: 17 Con: 12 Int: 14 Wis: 5 Cha: 16 I was thinking of making him a charming(CHA) son of a merchant. He was sent to an academy at a young age(Which would explain his good intelligence). He has a decided skill in Fencing and he fancies himself one of the best blades in the world.(Explaining his high dexterity), although since he did not have a lot of parental guidance and is quite irresponsible(low Wis). The academy put him through rugged training early on(explaining his average Strength and Constitution). He has set out to prove himself the best fencer in our current setting. He has yet to learn that being good with his blade isn't about everything. Would this be good? Are there any other personalities I could use with the stats? What skills and feats should I take? I know Weapon Finesse(Rapier) is a must, but what else? |
| Orion Polaris12-11-03, 10:56 PM | NOTE: I FORGOT TO MENTION THIS IS A 3E CHARACTER. I am a 1st level Human Fighter, and I think I may take a Rogue class level at level 3. My DM is allowing me to use Cross Class Skills as Full class skills at first level because I am writing a background and personality for my character.(Rping is a problem in my group, and he's doing all he can to encourage it, he allows us to pick 2 features from the list for each, a background and personality. I picked Cross Class=Normal Class skills, Max Gold, and Double starting Gold, which takes up two features.) Skills: *Diplomacy 4(CHA) *Hide 4(Dex) *Intimidate 4(CHA) *Knowledge(Nobility) 4 *Balance 2(Dex)+3=5 *Move Silently 4(Dex)+3=7 Starting Items: Masterwork Rapier 3 daggers Nobles Outfit Studded Leather Sling Bullets I have 57 gold left, what else should I buy? Are these good? I am thinking of taking Weapon Focus(Rapier) and Quick Draw as my last two feats. Should I take something else instead of Quick Draw? |
| Morka12-12-03, 10:35 AM | What is his alignment? With a so low WIS, I would forget the academy. Instead, he seems the kind of guy who grew up in the street. He learned from hundreds of friend many different things, but like you said, he lack the parental guidance. If you plan to multiclass to a rogue, you're better to start as one, so you will get many more skills points. At second level, go for fighter, you will still gain the bonus feat. As for the personnality, he should be the one always speaking, and often insulting people without knowing it. If the other people are not telling him, he is too stupid to realize he insulted them. |
| Enialis Galadonels12-12-03, 11:35 AM | Yeah, and with such high Charisma, he would insult other people's so good and precise. Like slowly piercing flesh with sharp knife... and he still wouldn't understand that he had insulted them. Take into mind - Charisma is the personality - how well you say everything - will it go strightly to other's heart. Wisdom is common sense |
| Winternova12-12-03, 02:53 PM | I like the no academy suggestion, personally, this tells me he made it all the way to the city in question, and decided to live differently at that point. One bad decision there, but not all hope is lost. Personally, I like to create characters a little differently. I like to come up with their personality first, and then fit the stats around them. The example I used when I explained this to my PCs was a guy named Thurston Black who hates his name, preferring nicknames like 'blackie' or 'domino' (old high school nickname.) He's an average highschool graduate in his twenties living in California, who's a complete car nut. Being an average high school graduate doesn't give him any particular physical prowess, and he doesn't handle that spare transmission with one hand (medium strength), but at least he's articulate enough to do the detailed work without screwing things up (medium-high dexterity). He's a friday night drinker, and doesn't mind a few long days (medium constitution). He's got a sharp mind from years of Hot Rod magazines and hands-on tinkering (Medium-High intelligence), and a keen instinct when it comes to 'feeling out' curves, problems, and the like (medium-high wisdom). Sadly, he's a bit of a hermit, and his personality is fairly bland. Outside of cars he really doesn't have any interests, likes, or dislikes. He's easy to get along with, but just don't count on him to make any decisions, or spur any conversations (low-medium charisma). Of course it all comes down to rolls, or points, or however your DM does it to get the end product what you had envisioned. |
| spoon24212-12-03, 02:57 PM | I don't know what low wisdom has to do with growing up on the street. I'd think it would be the exact opposite. Those who aren't aware of their surroundings are going to get a shiv in the back. With a wisdom that low he'd be dead in a New York minute. I like the son of nobility idea, actually. He may think he's above everybody, and thus talks down to them. He may not realize just how much he's insulting people, or he may be doing it on purpose because he's insecure with his own place in society. With a low wisdom, I'd say his lack of common sense gets him into all sorts of trouble, trouble which he usually gets out of by fast-talking or bribery or just by mentioning his family. "You want to arrest me? Don't you know who I am? I'm the son of Lord Soandso! Arrest me and my father will have you licking the canal in the tanner's quarter for the rest of your days!" He'll be used to "just sliding by" on his reputation and personal charisma. His professors at the academy wanted to fail him, but his parents are so powerful, and he's such a nice kid that they let him move on, even if he's a bit lazy or doesn't apply himself to his studies. He's always been a troublemaker because he could get away with it. Nobody has the heart to punish him. Perhaps he's a troublemaker or the class clown in order to make his boring life at court more interesting. The story of the rich thrill-seeking youngster isn't an unfamiliar one. He's not stupid (Int 14), just very brash and doesn't think before acting (Wis 5). As far as equipment, he always wants the best of everything. The best armor and weapons, the designer jeans, the poshest room at the best inn. And if he can't buy it or haggle for it, he's not disinclined to steal it. What he wants, he gets...one way or another. Sorry if this rambling is unintelligible. Hope I gave you some ideas to work with. |
| Orion Polaris12-12-03, 06:55 PM | I always thought Wis was common sense and Int was book smarts? Doesn't that mean he would'nt make it in the street? |
| Morka12-12-03, 07:39 PM | What I meant about more street wise than academic is in an academy, the teachers will not only have you read books, they will make sure you understand what you read. That's why it's not compatible with a low WIS. And in the street doesn't mean he is only living in the street. His father could be a rich merchant, but him being too lazy to work, make many friends in the streets (thanks to high charisma) who show him many little things. I don't see keeping on insulting people. He just says something unpleasant, but in general he is so friendly that the insulted person will not return against him. |
| Henry Hankovich12-15-03, 04:12 AM | Could be it's not that he's -insulting- people, per se, but that he just has no idea of tact or propriety. Like walking up to someone and saying "wow, your wife has really nice b00bies!" without really thinking about it. Much like a young child, or someone with mental retardation. Actually, a Wisdom score of 5 with a normal Int could be seen as being developmentally disabled...you're not -stupid-, per se, but are functionally incapable of acting in a socially acceptable manner. His survival to this point would fit in well with having some sort of protection behind him, be it nobility or family wealth or whatever. A Wisdom of 5 is well into the bottom 30% of the population...so this character has some SERIOUS problems, not just being somewhat untactful. He's the sort of person who might be smart, but wouldn't be able to sit still long enough to actually get any education. The more I think about it, the more mild mental retardation of some sort seems to fit. Or insanity, depending on how you look at it. Make him Chaotic and you could have some good ol' times there.... :D |
| WizO_Autumn12-15-03, 08:41 PM | I'd go for having him, in addition to no common sense what-so-ever, incredibly impulsive. I'd play him almost as an ADHD type- charasmatic, so able to get out of his problems, and smart, but often getting into trouble without really realizing it. And most certainly acting before thinking. |
