Yes, depending on the world. You may need a touch of paranoia if homosexuality is considered evil, but that's the world rather than the homosexuality.

I'm not even sure which gender one of my current characters is attracted to (or even which set of pronouns to use). She's a young female elf masquerading as male for safety...

Anyway, not a big deal, just thought you might want to know.
I think when you meet someone of that kind of preference, you don't end up knowing it until they want you to, if ever, since they are perhaps afraid of ridicule, just make them a little detached to the present. But I couln't really tell you from experience.;)
