I've recently started and adventure with a Chaotic/Evil Halfling Rouge Wann-be Assassin, however, I've learned that it is impossible for me to play a Chaotic let alone an Evil character. So, in our adventure, my character has started to become religous. It is also apparent that I can't be a Chaotic character for this adventure because it appears that I'm the leader of the group. It hasn't been established, but I'm the one who seems to be leading the group at this time.

I guess my question would be, how exactlly does an Evil character become Good?

That answer varies HUGELY based on who you are, where you come from, and what you are doing. What kind of background do you have? What has been going on in the campaign?

There are any number of answers as to how you become good.

Divine intervention is one. So is mortal intervention for that matter.

Severe loss through your own evil actions can quickly turn someone around. This should work nicely with your apparently mercenary character.

Betrayal by former allies can sometimes do the trick. If you decide you want to work with more trustworthy people you may also come to the conclusion that you, yourself, must be more trustworthy in order to attract such.

I've seen some excellent characters based off the Helm of Opposite Alignment.

If played out properly one can even simply become bored with evil. A selfish character can reach a point in their life where they feel a need to have some greater purpose.

Unless you have made many Chaotic/Evil deeds I would suggest you to talk with your DM and just ask him to let you change your alignment to whatever you want. However you can be CE and still have "good leadership" skills. For example I once had an esquizofrenic CE half-elf ranger as a leader that basically tricked or forced the party to indirectly do whatever he wanted and if they refuse he threaten to kill them. He would literally have the rest of the party as hostages, isn’t that hilarious? :D

I can see you wanting to give up the Evil, but there's no reason you can't be Chaotic and the group leader, just think of Robin Hood. This is especially true if the majority of the group isn't Lawful.
