I have a fairly interesting character I'm playing, who's roughly based on a character idea I've had for a while now. I played her on several MU*s (online RPGs, leave it at that if you don't know ;) ) and was fairly satisfied with how she turned out. But upon trying to convert her to the D&D game, I found I had absolutely no idea for a motivation or background for her that wasn't horribly cliche. Her character sheet (http://3ep.rpgprofiler.net/3ep/view.php?id=4508) shows the basics, but eventually she's going to focus on wielding two sais, or a whip. I was also debating what her ranged weapon should be, since I consider the whip more of a tool than a useful weapon. I don't particularly want to take another exotic feat for shurikens, although they would fit her well.

I was also debating whether or not to give her unarmed capabilities, but decided it would require too many feats before she dealt any decent damage with it. Apart from that, if you've seen Daredevil, she wields Sais on par with Elektra and moves just as nimbly. Not sure who to compare her whip abilities to, I'm sure any whip-wielding female heroine would be accurate. :D

In any case, I was hoping for ideas to help me figure out a somewhat original idea for her past. She's a generally somber individual, not given to joking, and what you would call cold and blunt. She has tact when she needs it, but she doesn't sugar-coat things.

Any ideas would be happily welcome and appreciated. ^^

Don't take more exotic weapon proeficiencies. With the whip in one hand, you can trip foes, then hit them with the scimitar; a good synergie. And the shortbow is good when you have no choice to go long range. Usually, you should go to theCharacter Optimization Board (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=339) for building questions.

Now for the background, what are your ideas? Help us to help you by giving us a starting point...

Well, I was figuring that she would have some event of note that's definitely negative in her past. Either an event that affected people she loved catastrophically, or an event that she played a part in that had detrimental consequences. In the case of the latter, she would have to have been unknowing of just how bad what she was partaking in was.

I originally thought I would have her searching for someone, or perhaps seeking vengeance on some NPC (who may later become a villain if the DM wants). But then I realized they both seemed like such empty, cliche concepts.

I dunno, I want there to be something behind her personality. Or at least her reason for training so vigorously and becoming a fighter at all.

Usually, the whip is the weapon of slavers. She could be an ex-slaver, or she could have fled some slavers and now she use their own weapon against them.

Alternatively, you could use an evil cult worshipping a Deity of Pain & Torture (Loviatar in FR, don't know in Greyhawk...)

You could also think about who can spend time to learn how to use a weapon dealing no true damage. Perhaps a noble, who always had bodyguard to defend herself against true threats?

Those all seem like interesting ideas. Had she been a noble at one point...perhaps even a cruel noble, who used the whip on her servants/slaves...that might be an interesting past.

And then some event might have caused her to turn her life around. That could eventually lead to her seeking some kind of ultimate atonement...there certainly seem to be a lot of possibilities on that track. ^^

I'll have to ponder the matter further, most definitely.
