My gnome Necromancer , Ceril Demde, (wizard 5, going pale master) Has stopped dead in his tracks. I've found an awful hang point, and unless I can get him moving again, I'm afraid i might scrap him out of boredom or frustration. To be completely honest a extra level wouldn't go amiss in this department.

I've hit a roleplaying deadspot, And i'd really like suggestion as to where to take the little gnome next.

Alittle backstory (bare with me):

The Gnome was born and raised in a small human village. He was the part of the only gnome family in the village, and was quite a scoundrel until he snuck into the alchemists shop. The owner caught him, and interrogated his reasons out of him. turns out Ceril did it out of pure curiousity, not to steal anything. the alchemist gave him a text to read to keep him out of trouble. before anyone knew it he was learning spells. he specialised in necromancy out of a morbid curiousity, and the alchemist relucently fostered the little gnome as he went about his studies. A year long war occurred, against hordes of undead passing over the mountains. Ceril joined the army to help. After serving loyally, he was allowed to leave when 'the wall' was built and the country saved.

After a lovely lull, goblins began raiding. this is where the adventuring began. The party crushed the goblins underfoot only to be assailed by some fiery undead. on a return trip, using a stolen necklace from another PC, the undead animated a dragon and set it loose. it burned down the village and there was nothing much we could do, so we let it burn. The other players packed up their characters to try new ones.

So... his village is burnt to ash, his friends died of natural causes (how given up PCs go out the group) and my character is left high and dry. there is nothing left to direct him forward, and i'm stumped. Where does it go from here? He's not up to animating yet, so he's not getting jumped by paladins yet. No illegal acts yet ethier, just morally questionable ones.

He's been playing crowd control, so it's not exactly like he's a nuking machine. not a *true* necromancer yet, no undead or anything. It is literally an open playing field. And i'm unsure what to do. It's a lower alignment game, but we've already (attempted) to save one village.

Any suggestions for some interesting routes? I was thinking over the top evil, but knowing my DM i'd get hammered by the law. I need some sugestions. what direction would you take him? I've been informed that my party will be made up of a werewolf and a ghoul soon. No options have really jumped out at me.

So, any ideas?

are you asking us where you should take your campaign? Thuis sounds like something you should be asking your DM. does your character hae any personal goals to pursue? this looks like a great time to go join the circus or whatever.

Maybe he should just move on from the town, after paying his last respects to his friends and family. He could meet the rest of the party elsewhere down the road. Or, you could scrap him, and figure something else out. After all, everyone else is starting ith new characters, so why not you, too?

After something like that, the rallying cry that leaps to my mind is "Never again." He could become preoccupied, possibly even obsessed, with preventing such a slaughter from befalling his friends and/or family again. Of course, he does not necessarily have to empathize with his enemies; he needn't necessarily be above slaughtering innocents and raising them as undead (once he's capable of doing so) in order to protect his friends, if you want to take him in that direction. You could also make him a bit more reckless, possibly willing to sacrifice himself for the good of his friends.

This, of course, assumes you can justify a personal stake in the lives of the new party.

Thanks for the replies. it may seem like I am asking about the campaign in general, but I am much more interested in my characters role and how to develop it.

Travelling is the only real option for the character. You asked why I'm not making a new one too? I feel like I can get more out of this character, just not a clear idea how to keep him interesting until he's slightly higher-powered. Repeating concepts never goes down too well.

"Never again" is a very interesting suggestion. It fits very well with his obssessive nature, He's already taken the corpses from the goblins ready for animation. Although to truly see it work I will need to look at how the group dynamics of the next session or so goes. My character would have to put a stake in alot of groups. a new PC every two sessions is the current pace for them. I can't really see it slowing down.

Thanks for your input, it was truly helpful. It will hopefully keep the character lively until I can hook him into whatever overplot my DM is planning.

As a smaller note for your character and one that could put him on a slope down towards evil I have a suggestion. Try taking up collecting the remains of those who have been lost. Your character can find the path of "I'm not evil. I just want back the life I earned." to be a trip towards any number of ends. Imagine telling a paladin you have no intent to animate the bones in your haversack but rather to see the lives unjustly taken renewed.

You have done your duty and still had everything taken from you. Grief and madness mix well.

Well, if an abandoned PC "dies of natural causes", and you decide to go with this character motivation, then every time another player decides to switch characters, your necromancer can take one more turn down the spiralling descent into obsession and madness...
