Were starting at 4th level, The area is a grasslands with a floating city on a lake (Think Laketown in the hobbit, but built by elves and maintained by gnomes.) and a smattering of villages. and towns. The big baddies in the area is a fortified city of gnolls. We are only playing for 6 weeks as a fill in so it doesn't have to be Shakespeare, I'm trying to give my GM allot of "hooks" to play off of.

Here goes.

Godfrey the Green Scout 3/Ranger 1

Godfrey is an orphan, a passing merchant caravan Found the infant Godfrey swaddled alone in the grasslands just off the merchant trail. The captain of the guard took the boy and left him with a local druid circle "the hollow" A human druid couple living in a renovated halfling burrow located near an ancient set of standing stones.

His surrogate parents were kind and wise and raised him right, They were neutral and tended to anyone in need. Wether they be criminal or merchant, farmer or gnoll. A gnoll raiding party came across the Hollow and murdered his parents, not knowing who they were. Godfrey was away when it happened. He tracked the surviving gnolls thru the grasslands and terrorized them, picking them off one by one. He left one battered wounded gnoll make it back to Bloodfang keep to tell others about the "terror in the grass" Gnolls still tell this tale to scare their children.

He lives as a guide and tracker, Friend to Dwarf and Elf, Human and Halfling. He knows the headman of almost every village and hommlet. As a courtesy he brings news, delivers letters and passes small packages between friends in different villages.

Outsiders see him as kindhearted and helpful. always ready to pitch in and help out when need be. (He helped raise the MacKinnons new barn two months ago after the fire! I hear he brought a potion of healing for the Quintas's sick daughter all the way from Whisperlake! )

Anyway I'm going for the whole Peasant hero, friend to the locals kind of thing. Bit of a hick, knows everybody, friend in every village and town. What do you think?? To "Strider?"

No, not too strider (although he could become too strider when you give him a royal lineage ;)). Are you going to leave the story about your original parents to the DM. That's cool if you want to find out about the mystery, but otherwise, you could fill it in yourself. Perhaps your parents were fleeing from BBEG and were killed by an assassin. However, they managed to hide you and so you were saved by the merchants.

You (or your DM) could think of a really cool BBEG or even use you as a campaign tool. Perhaps the BBEG needs your blood for some sort of ritual (although that might be over the top and unrealistic as he would surely have the assassin look for you until he found you death or alive).

The one thing I'm missing is your motivation to leave the area and start adventuring. I see only one reason why this character would leave the region and that is if something threatens the whole area and the only way to stop the menace is going out to kill it. Perhaps you need some sort of mentor who took you in after your druid parents were killed. Maybe another druid came to guide you (especially after a traumatic event like the murder of your parents, the druid circle should realize that they can't let you go on by yourself; That's the way to become evil (anger leads to hate, hate leads to fear, fear leads to suffering - or something)).
Anyway, if you have such a mentor, he might order you to leave the area to do some stuff. This could give you a reason to start adventuring.

Hope this helps,

Cheers
