| J.Augustus Rose II12-07-04, 10:01 PM | My current character is a Wizard/Paladin and I've been trying (and failing) to come up with a title for him (y'know, like "Holy Mage" but much less lame.) Anyone have any better ideas? I'm just bangin' my head against the wall at this point. :banghead: |
| Melpomene12-07-04, 11:57 PM | Paladin. If they're walking to good path, they'v forsaken spellcasting. Incidentally, I had one player who took just enough wizard ranks to learn true strike, then became a paladin, and caused so much havok... |
| J.Augustus Rose II12-08-04, 12:17 AM | Ooookay...I don't see how spellcasting and "walking the good path" are mutually exclusive but I'm not going to get into one of those bloody paladin debates. And I hadn't thought about that true strike thing. My dm will surely hate you for bringing it up. |
| Trydan12-08-04, 03:36 AM | If you are just going for True Strike, then consider either Diviner (that is as Wizard specialising in Divination) or Sorcerer. That way you can cast the spell more times per day. As an aside, casting True Strike can also work well with Rogue too, nothing quite like ensuring that the Sneak Attack really hits, although you may need a few more levels to ensure you can cast it with the feat Silent Spell. And don't forget... True Strike has no somantic components... that means no Arcane Spell Failure (due to armour, and so on). Howwwwwever... Getting back to the topic at hand, for grandiose titles, I always try and incorporate "of the" into the epithet. As it is a paladin, you can start thinking law, righteousness and deliverance. The wizard part has all the magic implications. Then just string them together: Saver of the Righteous Magic Bringer of the Arcane Retribution Champion of the Just Cause Wizard of the Sacred Order etc. And, one other idea, is to develop a new term: "Wizadin". These (in terms of game mechanics) are just Wiz/Pal multiclasses, but in roleplaying terms, they are a particular order of paladins, recruited from within the arcane sphere of spell-casters, aimed to bring knowledge of the non-divine magic to the holy order, thus allowing them to combat evil mages, etc. etc. |
| Melpomene12-08-04, 02:11 PM | Technically, you can never go back to spellcasting classes once you'v become a paladin. You can be a good spellcaster, even exalted, but you aren't walking the same path as a paladin. Not to belabour the point, but the paladin class really is mutually exclusive to every other base class and almost every PrC. |
| nihility12-08-04, 02:41 PM | Technically, you can never go back to spellcasting classes once you'v become a paladin. Sure you can. You just can't be a paladin again afterwards. There's nothing stopping you from multiclassing out of paladin at all, and there are plenty of paladin PrCs in case you want to go back. |
| Melpomene12-08-04, 04:43 PM | Well, rightright, I meant that metaphorically. ...and, a blackguard/wizard.... |
| Callista12-08-04, 09:47 PM | You're referring to the "paladin can't multiclass and then take more paladin levels" right? I don't see a paladin's superiors rejecting him because he believes he can do more good if he learns magic, and he certainly doesn't stop being a paladin. He probably won't stop calling himself one, either. He might be an odd paladin... the "flashy" style of arcane magic doesn't fit the style of most paladins, so chances are, he'll research spells that increase his combat potential and put divine-ish names to them (i.e., True Strike="Divine Accuracy")... but he'll still be a paladin, even if he is one whose methods differ from most of his fellows'. His paladin levels don't turn into ex-paladin levels; and he's still subject to his code. He just doesn't advance as a paladin anymore. That said, I wonder how the combination "Wizard/Paladin/Eldritch Knight" would play out? Sounds a lot like your "specialist paladins" recruited to combat evil magic... I've got a sorcerer who's going for that prestige class, and though it's quite plain vanilla, the fact that you advance as a spellcaster allows you the flexibility to be a viable character. True Strike+Smite Evil... You've just given me yet another character concept... thanks, guys. |
