| Kharne07-14-03, 01:04 PM | Hello folks, my brother recently asked me if he could play a cowboy-like character after he saw a preview of that new movie Hidalgo. His character concept really only used the cowboy hat and herding animals cliche, and the more he talked about it, the better it sounded to me. Then again, when someone walks up to me and says "Hey, I want to play a D&D cowboy next!" the reaction I immediately have is... :uh-huh: This made me wonder if there are others of you who have had the same experience with some of your fellow gamers. I'll give two more examples of what I'm talking about: One of my players, when I asked him what he was making for the next game, immediately asked me if I'd seen the movie "Snatch". I had not yet seen it, so he proceeded to tell me about this drunk Irish monk that he was working on. Needless to say, I was a bit nervous about whether there was too much schtick and not enough character. I almost asked him to make something else, then decided to see how it went. I am so glad I allowed that character into the game. The player was speaking in character and none of us could understand him except one of the players. The best part was that his character spoke elven with no accent whatsoever. That way, if he was trying to get something across and we were having too much trouble understanding him, he could switch to elven and ditch the accent. Obviously, the character went into the Drunken Monk prestige. I have now seen that movie, by the way, and it is amazing how well he had the character down. :P My second example is a bit more of a stretch. My brother came up and told me he wanted to play Santa Claus. Again, immediate reaction from me... :uh-huh: He then went on to explain that he wanted to play an elven Paladin/Wizard who was really big, had white hair, and had devoted his life to help ease the suffering of the children in the world. His elven name did have "Nick" in there somewhere. We have not yet had an opportunity to pay this character, but i'm definitely looking forward to it. I'm just curious as to who else had had characters like these wander into their games and, despite any misgivings the DM may have about goofiness, really enrich the game because of their presence. |
