| Uriah08-13-06, 07:29 AM | Okay, So I'm kicking around inside my head a mage who specializes in cold and the like... I'm thinking... Spell Thematics: Cold Flame (Black and blue flames) Energy Sub: Cold Piercing Cold Lord Of The Uttercold I'm sure you folks get the idea by now, It's a forgotten realms campaign so I'm thinking... I'll make my character from the spine of the world, (The coldest place I could think of) And his reason for adventuring is really just to further his study of magic and the like, I figure. But... that seems kind of weak, so I was wondering if you fine folk could help me. |
| Harrow Blade08-13-06, 07:49 AM | Perhaps your character is a raging ego maniac who wants to cover the realms in ice, either to control it or to strengthen the lesser races by tempering them. When you have a theme like ice it tends to be restricted to a climate zone and often a strong motivation is required. Perhaps you had a family before you persued the power of ice and cold then you hear of something happening to them to draw you out. |
| Uriah08-13-06, 02:30 PM | Hrm, both of them are very good ideas, though I'm more towards the second, I forgot to mention that he has to be good, So I'm shooting for chaotic good. |
| The_Spirit08-13-06, 05:20 PM | There is a book called Frostburn that might have some prestige class's you'd like to look at. Where is peircing cold from? Flash Frost Spell form PHBII might help. |
| Uriah08-14-06, 04:11 PM | Piercing Cold is from Frostburn, and it makes cold smells VERY cold, reducing the effectiveness fo resist cold and doing double damage to fire type creatures rather then just 1.5 Lord Of The Uttercold turns half of all the cold damage you do into negative energy damage <.<; He may be good but he's not very nice XD |
| Devlonir08-14-06, 05:19 PM | Im not so familiair with FR, but i think i might be able to help a bit. Good and cold are hard things to match. Cold means death for most cultures, as it kills crops and people! So, you must also think of a good, ethical reason why your character decided to study the cold. Maybe he studies the power of the cold so he can better control it? Maybe in the end, he wants to be powerful enough to decide when the cold comes, and when it is pushed away. He can also keep back warmth and drought with his power over cold in the future. But to do that, he first has to learn the destructive power of the cold. And here comes the nice ethical part of it all... Because maybe, by learning its power, he becomes obsessed by it and may turn to evil, just using the cold for destruction instead of good... I see some nice potential here. |

Definitely... one must also remember the constructive side of cold as well. Cold kills, but a well built snow house can save lives. One who has mastered the cold must first survive it, and then is in a position to help others survive in it. The master of cold is also a formidible opponent in a climate of heat (supposing no Mr Freeze type need to remain at low temperatures, of course.) |
| The_Shaman08-17-06, 07:57 AM | Well... Every element kills, when out of balance - ok, air needs to be in the form of lightning, but still :) . Perhaps your sorcerer was, for some reason, raised with cold creatures - uldras, ice paraelementals, and the like. An inborn affinity to cold magic could help her survive there, and the same affinity could be honed to perfection beyond other magi by the teachings of that race. Maybe your sorcerer actually has some fey blood, or a genasi ancestor, who knows. In this case, you don't need to be so aggressive. You haven't actively sought out this powerful connection to the cold; you have it. You could adopt a mindset closer to a ranger's: these are your lands, and you will defend them. The race that raised you is your race, even if not by birth. You follow their ways because they are the right ways to you, and you will defend them if need be. Even if you leave the frozen lands, they will always be within you. If you do leave them, it may be to test your magical powers - would they still be as powerful far from the Spine of the world? Alternatively, you could have an inborn connection to the cold magic despite your desires and best efforts. Perhaps you have inadvertently killed or injured an old friend, and want to have nothing to do with magic... or at least cold magic, and you are trying to get away from the power that terrifies you. It's a little too melodramatic for me, but it might be fun: you don't want to do magic, but you are bloody good with it. Too good. It might be interesting to adapt the nymph's kiss from BoED for this setting... resistance to cold instead of all spells, perhaps? |
